  • 💡 This animation video deals with global food security. The video is the resulted of a cooperation between scientists of KU Leuven and Wageningen University. Marijn Raeven made the animations. Chris MacAskill did the voice-over.
📜 Will we be able to feed 10 billion people by 2050? And at what price for climate and biodiversity? These questions are raised in the debate on sustainable food systems. The answers often contain a lot of emotion and sometimes lack facts. Scientists from KU Leuven and Wageningen University joined forces to set out a number of facts. Marijn Raeven poured that information into an eight-minute animation video. Chris MacAskill, scientist and founder of Plant Chompers, provided the voice-over.
Making the food system more sustainable is a complex issue that requires targeted measures. The figures show the urgency of the problem. About 30 percent of the population is malnourished and 40 percent is overweight. Agriculture has a huge impact on environment and climate, while the farmer himself is increasingly confronted with the consequences of global warming, a decline in biodiversity and a pressure on income.
In April 2024, the fifth Global Food Security Conference will take place in Leuven. The central theme of the conference is the transition to a just, sustainable and resilient food system. Tessa Avermaete (KU Leuven) and Martin van Ittersum (Wageningen University & Research) are co-chairs of this event.
The close cooperation between the two institutions is the basis for the development of the animation video. The scientific content for the video was provided by Gerard Govers, Martin van Ittersum, Tessa Avermaete, Wannes Keulemans and Olivier Honnay. Marijn Raeven structured the input and developed the matching animation. This is not Marijn's first attempt. Earlier this year, also in collaboration with researchers from KU Leuven, he made a video about agriculture in Flanders.
The video was narrated by Chris MacAskill, founding father of the popular RUclips channel Plant Chompers. Plant Chompers offers informative stories about nutrition and health.
The makers of the animation video could count on the financial support of VLIR-UOS.
