- Uganda lost one of its illustrious politicians on Monday. Aggrey Awori, a former ICT minister and presidential candidate passed away at a private hospital in Naalya, Kampala, aged 82.
Awori began his political journey in the early 1960s as a youth winger of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and later became a journalist and politician who witnessed some of the most important moments of the Republic unfold.
In his later year, he was voted the best legislator in the Sixth Parliament.

I join Mrs Thelma Awori and her family as well as all Ugandans and other people who are mourning my senior countryman, the Hon Aggrey Awori. Apart from sharing the same region, Hon Awori and I had one more thing in common. We knew when to agree to disagree. And so I disagreed with Hon Awori on some political orientations but agreed with him on the need to develop the country; and the Eastern region in particular. After FOBA and UPA, and Alice Lakwena's trail of death, Eastern Uganda went very badly down economically while her societies suffered from displacement and associated disorientation. On these matters my senior countryman and I were totally agreed. But even when we disagreed, being the old-fashioned gentleman that he was, the smile never left his face.
And so I bid farewell to a great journalist and thinker from the East. May the rays of the Eastern sun shine gently on your rest place, each new day.
