I love how the spaceship on its maiden voyage is supposed to belong to "The White Star Line". That was the name of the company that built and owned the Titanic in 1912. And the director and main stock holder for that White Star Line was likewise aboard Titanic.
HaHa- " Contact your nearest travel agent or White Star office"- by the late 90's travel agents and offices had died due to the internet and online shopping.
Great film, actually. This low budget touch is part of the charm. FLX is pretty cool too, if it is made of cardboard and foam. 😉 This one's at the top of the Sandler/Emenegger schlock-pile. One of their best, along with Warp Speed and Escape from DS3.
“White Star Line” I’m sure many picked up on the 1912 reference. A low budget film but there was one scene which made me extremely uncomfortable and worth watching for that alone. Carl Lumbly was great in that scene.
Captain Montaign was probably following unsafe orders from White Star management to push rhe engines as hard as possible to make the trip to Jupiter in record time.
There's an interesting kernel of a film buried in here somewhere. Decent miniature effects for '81, turns out they were done by Brick Price Movie Miniatures/WonderWorks Inc which is surprising. Unfortunately whoever did this transfer was out of their mind. Not sure if the source print was framed for 4:3 or what, but if you compare it to the old crummy VHS capture floating around on RUclips, you can tell they just chopped off the bottom half of the image to make it widescreen. Real shame.
This is a bad crop for sure, but the transfer is otherwise better than the VHS material around. Too bad, really. Still waiting for a transfer directly from the original print. I expect this was shot on cheap 16mm stock, and it shows.
Now why isn't there a legit remake of this great story? It could use all the modern accoutrements and CGI touch, and with the green matte, the ship and the space environment could use a huge upgrade. I'm gonna cross my fingers someone hears my request 🖖
The nutjobs who are bringing AI on line are putting all of humanity at peril, as usual we can't see the forest for the trees! Ugh.. BTW not bad for a low budget movie even though the set is held together with glue and duct tape, there's a massage to the madness if you're willing to see it!
The concept of artificial intelligence has been around for decades... Seems it's not very new... Computers thinking for themselves, I've never seen this movie before, the White Star line, the reporter in this movie... Is the same guy that plays in the movie "Doctor Sleep" the old man that guided doc to maturity.
Not the most noteworthy movie but still better than any of that Shyamalan bollocks. Nice touch letting the blokes grow some facial hair between scenes. I hope the bird finds a mate. I'll stick it in the "rainy day" file.
@ 7:50, it is good to know that entitled brats are still a problem in the future. For a ships officer he certainly doesn’t resemble any officer I have ever met, but I suppose this is the future of mankind, jeans, trainers (sneakers) and a waistcoat borrowed from the wardrobe department of Joseph and his Technicolour Dream-coat. I’m trying to work out if this is a ripoff of Titanic or 2001 a Space Odyssey, the passengers (what’s left of them) trying to find a way off the ship because all the lifeboats (pods) have launched, or Hal as has had a baby “HAL” on is just taking a page out of his dad’s cyber journal.
Cool movie I wish I'd have seen way back in the 80ies, when Mom allowed me to take some of my younger brother or sisters to the videostore and rent a MovieBox for the weekend, i might choose one movie, and them the other two that were included with a video-player in a plastic carrycase , for 5 bucks more you could have 5 movies for the weekend. Mom loved this because it meant we would be fixed to the screen for a few hours instead of jumping around. spoilerarning: As far as SCI-fi goes this is probably a cheap "2001 a space odessey"-rip-off because of the ship-Ai revolt against being controlled and wants to talk to it'ss creator. which is done pretty good, and i'm surprised not to have heard of this movie before. Not a B-movie ; good (enough)acting. pretty good sfx.
I suppose if this was on TV at 10:30 Sunday night I might watch it to kill time before bedtime. Not great considering it's low budget. But somewhat watchable.
Been wanting to watch this movie again for years... never expected to find it here. I watched it with my mom last in the mid to late 80's. Thank you.
Spooky ending dsrkstar bye....

What happened?
They were bought by Cunard, so no infringement issues there. 😉
That opening music was just close enough to the 2001 theme without infringing....
Reminds me of "Flash Bazbo Space Explorer - National Lampoon Radio Hour"
Haha, thought same.
Considering it's originally by Richard Strauss, it's a non-issue.
2001 was definitely Strauss, this version was apparently composed by Robert Emenegger.
This one slipped through the cracks for me. Thanks for the upload!

My second favorite Kristine DeBell movie.......
What's the first?
Did she also not wear a bra in your favorite Kristine DeBell movie?
EXCELLENT!!!
Did know about this jem. Great story, that could easily be built on
Very good movie well worth watching ✨
I missed this one! Thanks for posting it.
Captain Montaign was probably following unsafe orders from White Star management to push rhe engines as hard as possible to make the trip to Jupiter in record time.
Pretty good movie, and looky here, the is Jake from the show Jake and the Fatman!
Solid film. Thanks for the upload!
This would be a good double feature with The Killings at Outpost Zeta .
Or better yet: Warp Speed, another great Sandler/Emenegger lo-fi release.
Enjoyed it. I did not know this one.
The ship must have hit an iceberg on her maiden voyage.
Excellent old film. Low budget, high quality.
it was the 80's
It was an ok film, entertaining❤
For what it is and the time, it is not half bad
Yes we cross the university

Surprised I hadn't seen this before. Though it could do to be a bit tauter, it really wasn't too bad.

Wasn't there a 90s remake?
And CGI would kill the charm. I prefer the practical FX.
A Hoover in the vacuum of space; how apt! : )
Excellent movie!!🎉
Was that the bird at the end ? I was worried about the bird .
Uhhh… Don’t mind me for taking a pass on a long-distance journey aboard a White Star passenger liner.
2:37 man that parallax was utterly bizarre 😂
Jupiter, how long would you want to look at it, it's so huge, if you ever got close you'd see cloudy mess out the window
Plus, Jupiter puts out a lot of dangerous radiation. Not that healthy to hang around as a tourist without substantial radiation shielding.

I'm thinking the set technicians are standing by incase the set walls cave in.
@@WestCascades LOL, cut and paste!
No Bra's in space Great. Cheer's 🇬🇧
If the ship can hit light speed, it's only a 8 year trip..
Looks like they inherited the props & scenery from SPACE 1999! Lol.
White Star Line and a maiden voyage? You know that isn't going to go well.
Auhhh.... I knew I was missing something lol

Another one arguing with computer :)
Kristine DeBell was in an X-rated flick called Alice in Wonderland.
That would explain the level of her acting skill in this one.
Which chick is Christine, both are nice.

ALMOST GOOD
i will bet i have seen this before
strange superseded singularity story
not worth watching again, good movie to put you to sleep.
Even if I were stuck in a mental ward I would rather watch "The Price is Right" along with the vegetables..
HAL
Had to bail at 13:21. acting just too bad.
LOL
This film is utterly dreadful!!!
So bad it's not even funny
So bad it's funny. Fxd for you.
Terrible.
Don't be like that. For the 80's it is pretty decent.
