    That was an interesting error with the safety on the 380 EZ. Thanks for leaving it in. It reinforces: “practice with what you carry”. I got a horror story staring face to face with a pair of coyotes and a 1911 that wouldn’t go bang. Same reason, I’d walked those woods with a revolver for years, then one day I thought, “gee, let’s do something different today”. Nope.

    Obviously, one can’t change the fact 9mm delivers more weight faster than .380 but this .380 round is pretty good. Sam, a suggestion: compare ammo that is identical except JSP vs JHP. During all these shortages, I’ve found .357 125 JSP at a time I could not find 125 JHP. Also, I think about folks in places where they’ve outlawed hollow points. It would be instructional to see the legendary .357 125 JHP into gelatin at the same velocity as a 125 JSP. “Enquiring minds want to know.”😉

    .380 ACP is a tough cartridge to load ammo to meet the FBI specs for, especially when you are limited to standard pressure loads. Locked breech .380s like that S&W or Glock can use +P loads, and I think this cartridge can really benefit from +P loads. Unfortunately, with so many blow-back action .380 pistols in circulation, standard pressure is probably going to continue to be "the rule of the day."

    Another great video brother. I have kinda the opposite problem with the safety than you do. I'm so used to my 1911 45 that I subconsciously sweep the safety off with my thumb even if the safety is in a different place. A few weeks ago I really felt like an idiot when I went to blast a coon with my Mossberg 500 and when I pulled the trigger nothing happened. I brought the stock up to my shoulder and instead of pushing the tang safety off, I just swept my thumb down the side of the receiver and pulled the trigger. No surprise that she didn't go boom. It actually took me a couple of seconds to realize what I'd done. Then I just pushed the tang safety forward and still rolled the garbage bandit through the back yard. But man I felt dumb. I've been shooting 500s for years and that's the first time I've done something like that. Definitely got to practice with the ol girl some. The main problem is that when I need a shotgun I always grab my old Stevens 94c 16 gauge single shot and do whatever needs to be done. I'm scary good with that old girl. It fits me like a hand custom fitted shotgun would. Out of the hundreds of rounds that I've put through her, I've missed exactly one shot. And that's not bragging its the Gods honest truth. When I missed that one shot, I had 3 broke ribs and a 8" cut from my side around to my back on my strong side. That still bothers me today as dumb as that sounds. I've actually never owned a gun that didn't have a safety or hammer so it's not a problem for me to remember to take it off, but I've got to practice with the old pump. I wish somebody would make a shotgun and lever action rifle with the safety in the same place as my pistol. Then I'd really be in hog heaven but that's probably not gonna happen. Oh well, I can always dream I guess. Have a good one bro ,I'll be waiting for your next great video. They always are.

    As I have gotten older, and arthritis has set into my hands and wrists, I find myself moving to a .380
    I have carried an LCP in my pocket for nearly 10 years, but it was always the secondary gun. I just bought the Ruger Security 380 as my primary carry gun and will look at the Berreta 80x when I can find one.
    I figure if I am going to move to the .380 as a primary, I may as well look for a larger one, to maximize the round count, and maximize my gripping surface.
    (BTW - I have only put a hundred rounds through the Ruger, but I think it is a solid and very economical choice. I paid about $299 for it plus tax. I think the Berreta 80x has a list of about $800? - I am also considering the P365 in .380 since I have the 9mm already, and would be able to use my existing holsters.)

    The 380 did reasonably well, for its limitations. I seem to recall hearing that the heart is only about 3" deep, and the lings can't be much deeper. So there is that. It may be that the only solution to get the 380 to reach desired minimums is to make a mildly +p version, for locked breech pistols only. That might do it. However, we all know that people lacking knowledge (or too lazy to care) would shoot it in the wrong pistols, cause grief, xnd then whine about their guns wearing out and breaking. So we are left with it as is. All that said, i never carried one, and don't even own one anymore. Butin a midsized pistol like the EZ or the Berettas it could be a reasonable option for people who are recoil sensitive or have issues with grip strength, etc. And it is much better than a rock or a mousegun.

Currently I'm carrying buffalo bore flat nose lead hard cast(standard pressure) in my G42 because I've pretty much decided that no .380HP was going to expand and most will underpenetrate. It appears that Federal has reduced the velocity/energy of the current 99gr HST round to help them market their new 30 Super Carry which performs better than a 380 and almost as well as some 9mm rounds. I am not in the mood to invest a bunch into a new gun and caliber ammo. I have several boxes of the original 99gr HST and also Underwood Lehigh Extreme Defense fluted copper rounds and feel they are sufficient to get the job done unless the assailant is so fat that he's got over a foot of blubber to protect his insides. My employer requires the 147gr HST for 9mm’s (it’s devastating in actual shootings we’ve had). For .380, that 99gr HST is the only authorized bullet we can carry. It’s always been a bullet that only penetrates about 10” in plain Gel and is very consistent in that aspect. Like in this video, if the bullet hits clothing, it clogs and just acts like a FMJ. In that case, we’ve seen it penetrate up to 17” at times.
    So, is it the best .380 defensive loads? Nope. But it’s not the worst either. If I have to do a mag dump with a .380 and out of my “Central Nervous System particle separator” (Glock 42), then so be it. I’m confident due to my continuous practice with the gun, that I’m going to be hitting bad guy in the face/head and 10-ring area. I’m sure that the 99gr bullets will penetrate deep enough to make the bad guy “get off me.” I also carry several spare magazines wherever I go too, just in case.

      I ordered some this past Saturday and they were delivered to my doorstep this past Wednesday as I write this.
      They are labeled “Tactical/Law Enforcement”.
      You probably won’t find them at your LGS, and they aren’t listed on Federal’s website. I believe that they are advertised/marketed towards the law enforcement community specifically. But if some online retailer has them, they will sell them to anyone who wants to buy them, law enforcement or not. At least “Outdoor Limited” was perfectly willing to sell them to me.

    Everyone talks about penetration depth but somehow that doesn’t make any sense. 12” penetration? How many people are 12” thick? Not too many! My point for using hollow points is to KEEP THE BULLET IN WHAT I AM SHOOTING AT and not the second person behind him. No secondary casualties! If it passes through the body, it is not “dumping” all its energy in the original target. 6” seems to be perfect in my thoughts.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Год назад

      Ballistic gel is not a one to one ratio. While it puts the same pressure on a bullet to slow it down and expand a hollow point, it's about half as dense as a human. So 12" in gel is 6" in a human body. You need 6" in a human body to guarantee that a side shot through an arm, has enough penetration to get into the thoracic cavity and stop an attacker, so to represent 6", you must hit 12" in gel.

      @GunSam  Год назад

      I have tested it, and tested it again in a +P in a video I have not released. The issue I have, is that not matter how you slice it, pun intended, the bullet is still only .355" of cutting area. Just because it slows down and looks impressive in gel, doesn't mean it will work in the real world. With other bullet styles there is real world data to cross reference certain ammo, what they do in gel and how well they work on the street. Until there is street data, I can't really say how well it really performs other than it looks good in gel. With other ammo, lets says a random JHP bullet, if it expands to about the same diameter and penetrates to the same depth of a known bullet that has data, reason would say that this ammo would do as well as cutting is cutting. I can't make that statement with non expanding bullets with no data out there, closest I have is FMJ ammo data.
