If your battery voltage is the same as the LED then yes you can just use the battery. But if the LEDs are lower voltage than what the batter outputs, the resistors protects the LED. Otherwise the LED would shine VERY brightly and then burn out quickly.

I believe it is a solder less LED connector for the two wires to the power supply.
