India is a subcontinent, rifted from the Gondwana supercontinent in the Cretaceous (roughly 55 million years ago) to form the Himalayas in the Eurasian continent. It's not really considered a continent. Rather than strict criteria, continents are generally considered through convention-because if you use strict criteria, you could go as far as saying Europe, Asia, and Africa are one continent (Afro-Eurasia).
Tbf Russia has the right to call itself a continent lol it’s 1/6th of the world land mass and isn’t really 100% European or 100% Asian, it’s kind of its own thing. India too imo. Thnx for clip!
To be fair to Narin , there isnt a global consensus on what a continent is even at the top. You may be taught a different number according to which country you studied (from 6 to 8 continents) . Some would like to even consider tectonic plates to count as continents ...
In Spanish speaking classes, America is undivided. This is the main crux of the debate. It’s the same as how we perceived the “centre” of the map is. Most countries will centre their map with Africa in the Middle. If you look at a map in a Chinese/Japanese/Korean class, they centre their maps on their countries. In an American classroom, North and South America are basically in its own geography, everyone else is wrapped at the edges.
@FiredAndIced Oh I didn't know the map you mentioned last paragraph was a thing. I forgot how many continents they teach you in France. I would say 7 but it might be 6 , teachers do mention that Europe and Asia are technically one continent.
Yeah if you count America as a single continent and consider that Europe and Asia are also the same continent which makes more sense for a number of people, then you've got only 5 continents in the world. The definition of continents isn't precise and is a mix of geographical borders and political borders (the Ural mountains being the limit between Europe and Asia was made by the Russians who wanted to appear more Europeans, because back then Europeans didn't consider Moscow to be in Europe for instance, and that makes it the only continent border that is separated by a mountain chain, and not even on its entirety). When the Romans named their provinces Africa and Asia, historically they meant just Carthage/Tunisia and Anatolia/Turkey, not entire continents.
The joke about Russia being its continent, has an interesting merit: it stems from the fact that whatever borders of Russia you see on a flat projection map is actually a lie: Russia & her borders is actually curved following Earth’s shape.
we can't fix her
Beni is smiling right now
You've heard of VSPO math, now get ready for VSPO geography

India technically is a continent, it just somehow lacked in landmass. It even has it's own plate
Err…Subcontinent ☝️🤓

Shes just thinking on a higher level. India is basically like Europe being a continent, hell its even a separate plate.
