If I'm going to jail in this case, It's for assaulting my "tenant" 100%.
The first thing that's wrong with this is that someone physically breaking into your home should be a criminal matter and not civil!
100%
Laws for criminals is RIDICULOUS. Bet if a squatter was in a judge's house it wouldn't take 20 months to get a them out.
Of course not.
Update, they've just changed the squatter laws in New York this past weekend, probably because of this very case. Squatters can now be removed by the police quickly without having to go through civil court.
The Laws that allow squatters will be removed only after a squatter breaks into a politician/donor class house.
@heldermoura6151
I was thinking the same thing while I was listening to this.
It's so outrageous that squatters have ANY rights (let alone MORE), to another person's home. 🤔🤷
let's go. you and I.
Gordon Ramsey
@@ceoa what if you are renting a house and the landlord just claims you are a squatter, calls the police and they just drag you out.
Better to give a "squatter" rights than to put all renters at the mercy of their landlord's whims.
Further, if this guy had a lease in which he traded his labor for the right to live at the property, then he should have a chance to prove that at trial. This case has a woman that inherited a house so she does not know if he had an agreement with the prior landlord.
@@ceoa But it isn't the owner's personal residence if they are not residing there. You like to use language that makes it sound as if these people are "stealing the home of" some other person. They are not. They are living in an otherwise unused domicile. There is a difference. One I would bet you are loathe to admit to.
Squatting in a private residence should be considered home invasion and lawful to evict by force of arms. The right to private property is basic to personal freedom.
Someone steals your car, they get arrested. Someone steals your home, thats ok. What sense does this make? 🤬
10 million illegals break down the borders. They greet them with cash, hotel rooms, first class ticket to where ever they wish to fly and No security checks by TSA.
Rodriquez after 30 days in jail he can claim that jail cell
Now that is funny! Thanks for the laugh 😂
This is absurd and stupid. If the lease is not signed between the two parties, there is trespassing.
Why isn’t there a gov database for landlords to file leasee contracts? Then if someone claims to be a tenant they will have proof, otherwise you have to leave
The ONLY reason those laws changed so quickly is because of increasing migrants and wealthy New Yorkers with cottages and second homes. They called their pal KH and demanded the law change.
You're 100% right
Squatting should never be protected by law.
When I steal a car and 2 months later they catch me with it, I will be thrown in jail for theft. Squatting is nothing else then the theft of living space.
Anna wouldn't even have called him a squatter few yrs ago. She would say he's
a "Justice Tennent" , just like stealing was "Justice Shopping". Anna's gotten more sensible lately, good for her.
@@VmoneyV-ru9th yeah, but YOU show the perfect example for the biggest problem in general.
The topic was about squatting, I commented on the topic of squatting, and your answer was "But anna, but anna! I need to point a finger!"
What has Anna to do with my comment? Maybe stop crying about other peoples PAST and ask yourself why you are so needy to point a finger?
You can bet a member of the Police would never get arrested for trying to kick a squatter out of their home.
How is squatting not trespassing?
Can be. But it depends
It's basically trespassing + fraud
@@SmokingThatCasualPackand theft
"Who would defend this?" ... Duh. New York.
the correct term is trespasser, not squatter.
Wow, I actually clicked LIKE on a Young Turks video. That's never happened before.
TYT condemns the squatters but continue to beat on their chest promoting the politicians that support the squatters! Hypocrisy at the highest levels!
All rental leases should be filed with the COURT!! If not it's invalid period
By squatter law logic.. if you kidnap someone and hold them in your basement for 30 days, they are legally your spouse.
Nothing more American
Sounds legal in the middle east, so why not the US to?
Well in Michigan that is considered home invasion and malicious destruction of private property and you can go to prison for a minimum of 5 to 15 years for each count Thanks!
Cops arresting homeowner who did nothing other that try to protect her own property. Doesn't seem very constitutional.
Cops are the problem at least 90% of the time .....
@@travisyarbrough4033 Pops in this case are enforcing the law. He might want to understand that the law is to problem.
This is a MONEY MAKER for everyone EXCEPT the rightful owner in squatter situations.
Yup...
The court system itself, which means judge, lawyer, prosecutor, utility companies, and of course the city.
New York has thee worste government in America.
If people squat in my house …..they are in for something they can’t handle .
Ny just passed a law squatters are no longer considered or have tenant rights. You could immediately call the cops and get them kicked out and the law is effective immediately. Goodbye squatters should’ve always been like this in the first place.
Problem with that is some would just sign a lease and pay a month or two, then squat for years. They can run up the electricity and utility charges to thousands of dollars a month. Delinquent tenants (and mortgagees) have been known to rip out every cabinet, door, floorboard, plumbing and wiring, while the owner is forced by law to stand there watching helplessly.
Squatters aren't choosing an old abandoned house & fixing it up. No! Tons pick NICE homes & DESTROYS it before they leave! There's tons of vids showing $20-50,000 of purposeful damage.
If not rent is paid, your not a tenant.
Imagine stealing someone’s high end vehicle, taking it to the car wash, and then it’s yours. The cops stop you and you show him the receipt that you had the car washed and it becomes yours legally until the real owner goes through years of legal proceedings. All the while he/she is required to make the payments while you destroy his property.
That’s what is happening on a much larger scale with homes.
This needs to be stopped. I want it addressed at Congress. This is absolute insanity.
How can an illegal break-in and occupation be a “civil” matter and not a police matter. So the police won’t arrest me if I move into and squat in Walmart?
Squatters are breaking and entering = burglary, trespassing at minimum
If the squatters have no documentation that they’re actually attendance or “owned a home” how can they be allowed to stay? This is a bizarre law! This, lol needs to be amended and change. This is unacceptable!
In India , if you stay at a property for 13 years , then you have squatter rights
This is the most sane they've sounded in years
In Australia, it may not be illegal for a squatter to enter a property if it looks abandoned and the doors are unlocked. If the door isn't unlocked, the squatter could be criminally charged for breaking and entering. If a property owner asks a squatter to leave and they stay, they are trespassing.
It is a good thing to protect tenants. Squatters are not tenants.
We have anti squatters laws in Florida! If you don't vacate you go to jail right away....
If you call the cops.
This is completely ridiculous! It makes me so angry.
stay mad bitch
Same rights as a tenant? Without paying rent as a tenant? Seriously? Who made this law?
Democrats
The police unions across America lobbied for this since their inception, not wanting to get involved in domestic bs unless it involves civil forfeiture. The police get paid well to seize assets, not assholes.
What happened to the young Turks. They are sounding like common sense republicans.
What happened to the Republicans. They are sounding like common sense watching young Turks… maybe because is common sense and not political…
@@julioe.martinez4606They voted for this and now they want to talk about how ludicrous it is.
I wondered why it was recommended. Why would they think I like these guys? And I hope none of my friends noticed me watching 😂
@@user-vh7ki7xu7o f don’t worry about it… you have not friends
@@keriissovery9566 I don’t think the staff of the young turks have the authority of implementing any law… are you high?
Where has all the common sense in this world gone.
It's wild to me that New York requires the landlord to keep the lights on. Here in Texas that's your responsibility as the tenant, and to not keep the utilities on voids the lease as it's understood you're just borrowing the home so long as you pay and do the upkeep, which includes utilities. Heck, even just not mowing the lawn could be grounds for an eviction because keeping the lawn maintained is basic upkeep, (keeps pests out of the property and roots from damaging concrete walkways or worse.) And it generally only takes a couple months to get through our eviction proceedings. At bare minimum, New York needs to make renters responsible for their own damn utilities unless otherwise stated in the lease, and do something about getting cases through the courts faster.
Saw some people move in next door to my grandma in a dead man's house. The first thing these squatters did was put up a sign: "Private Property. No Trespassing."
Her pain just started now she needs to evict each subletter.
When Fox News and TYT agree on an issue it’s safe to say there’s consensus
Rent or mortgage payment are high enough that squatters should be charged for felony theft.
Any good mother would say, "I tried to teach you right from wrong, you should be BETTER than this!" So no, his mom gets no sympathy from me either.
What happened to the crime of Break and Enter ?
Why are you making normal content? Are you waking up?
If there is no rental agreement in writing then the squatter is not a renter. The squatter is breaking and entering private property. Right?
If LAWS dont apply for criminals, why should they apply for good citizens, which the government feeds from with our taxes
Run for office and then try and appeal the law😂😂😂😂😂
These are the democrat laws that you defend.
Check how they are doing things in Florida.
Bam, bam, bam house is mine.
This is the first time we ever gave TYT a thumbs-up. We stopped watching years ago due to explicit biases, but this report is fair and balanced.
Wait - TYT is *AGAINST* squatters? This has GOT to be an alternate reality...
Shine it on, homey. They're buffing their street cred in the ramp up to the November elections.
😂. I know right?! lol
Seriously, I've never seen TYT be so common sense
Just goes to show how crazy everything has gone now. When totally illegal individuals have control over someone else property.
Need to follow Floridas new law concerning squatters and felony for damages done to property by squatters.
It’s been happening for a while now, but as a conservative, I feel like we need to acknowledge this woman and the guys it takes to go against your own party on such huge issues. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My first like on a Young Turks video in probably 15 years.
Civil matter My ass it's trespassing and it's criminal
There is no lease to legally call squatters tenants.
You can fake a notarization too. These people are professional criminals. Laws should allow owners to sue squatters for damages and lost income.
Those laws already exist but squatters never have enough money to satisfy damages. What needs to happen is squatters are sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Laws should make landlords illegal.
Already exist.
@@kmasse81 That would be idiotic at best.
@@Sun-ic7rq this is becoming a common belief that demonizes landlords. That’s not going to happen unless the government owns all the rentals, which unfortunately is starting to happen in some areas.
The young Turks have a problem with white squatters but not illegal immigrant squatting?
Rodriguez doesn't sound very white.
There is no tenant agreement between the original owner and squatter (tenant) with acknowledgements and signatures. How does this takes effect if there is no legitimate agreement?
I'm sure if this squatter broke into a politicians home while he/she was on vacation, those anti-squatter
laws would be put into action like yesterday. This has been a problem for a long time and no politician anywhere bothered making any changes, until now. It's so stupid, it's beyond comprehension. Why they're not immediately charged with breaking and entering, I have no idea. And if this fool was leasing the house, what would make him buy a new front door? He's full of it. Remember when this first happened , a reporter was outside, a woman started walking to the front door of the house, the reporter asked if she lived there, she didn't answer and immediately turned on her heels and left the property, so you know right there something shady was going on. Handcuffing the homeowner like she was a flight risk, was not to be believed.
Let him squat in prison
Liking Anna so much more than ever. Always thought she was attractive and articulate, but now she is becoming really sensible.
The moment he pushed his way through, that constitutes a home invasion, since he wasn't a Tennant!
So, if I take $10 out of your pocket I go to jail. But, steal your house and I'm protected by the law? How is this not obvious?
TYT was cherry picking what laws they wished to portray. This is one time when I am thoroughly disappointed in them for not only 'cherry picking' anecdotes, they metaphorically dug through a whole bag of cherries to find the one bad one in the bunch, then held that one up as an example, claiming (by absence of laws in ALL the other states and municipalities) that this ONE anecdote is the law of the entire U.S.
@JF-qw4bd no they did the right thing by not pretending a major problem is only a major problem if there aren't any parts of the country that are privileged enough to not deal with it to the same extent.
This is becoming a major problem and most of the progressive media has made themselves look hypocritical by downplaying this issue. We need channels like tyt to show that not everyone is too far gone to admit this is a huge problem.
@@SmokingThatCasualPack I do love and appreciate TYT for reasons stated, and I'm not saying it's not a problem. Only I saw a slip in their journalistic integrity, which they are FAR better at then most media outlets, by downplaying, outright ignoring the fact, that MOST other states don't have the same over the top squatter laws as NY.
Whether it was intentional or not, they portrayed the story as if it were a national phenomena, and as though every state has just as bad, or similar squatting laws as NY, ...which is not true.
Even if one speaks truth in a story, omission of facts that speak to a broader context can be just as damning as lying, as we see every day by the likes of Fox 'News'. and the like.
Anecdotal coverage like this is not far off from right wing media claiming that ALL drag shows are 'grooming children' because ONE drag show was advertised as 'all ages'.
...Different story, but same cherry picking of facts to, dare I say, mislead the public into thinking something is more widespread than it actually is.
I’m impressed with Ana’s recent awakening! ❤ Recently started checking out TYT! I’m hearing the truth, squatter awareness-- thanks for the great reporting!!
Sounds like prison will give him the stability of home he wants.
Something has to be done about these squatters
They'll use the outrage over squatters to erode tenants rights. The solution is simple _so you claim you're a tenant? show us the paperwork. show us you're paying the legal owner._ Done.
Of course, it's what we always do.
For real I don't see why this is a problem
@DefileOdds because I don't wanna have to kill anyone which will happen if you invade my property

I didn’t know Cenk could comment on a matter without screaming.
But here you are, whining 🤷🏼♂🤣
Was this bum made to hand over all money he made while renting out this ladies property.
Honestly. Who cares about him getting his tires slashed or his mom? He took over someone's home and tried to get money out of it, then made someone's life a nightmare. Those things are the consequences of his actions. He's trying to use these excuses to gain sympathy.
Marxist dont like private ownership is socialism
Of course New York has squatter protection laws…
I have a uncle who is a heroin addict and couch surfs basically. He started staying on my porch against my consent. I told him I would call the cops and did so. I asked them to remove him whenever they saw him there and they agreed, even offering to increase patrols. They didn't like him at all. Still, he kept sleeping there and after 30 days had the nerve to help himself to my couch.
I am bedridden so had no ability to know when he did unless I had very late night visitors, which happened several a week. I had my visitors try to throw him out but he refused. I called the cops and they told me that they had seen him on the porch for more than thirty days so he was now a tenant h=and I had to begin an eviction notice to get rid of him. I went from love to hate with him over this.
Fortunately, for me, not so much for him, he ended up beating up his girlfriend and pulling a Knife on her on the front lawn with several witnessed ad went back to prison. He had previous convictions for assault and murder which the local cops were well aware of. It ended his squatting.
easy fix, if there's never been a tenant contract, and the owner has proof of ownership, then it's a squatter and they have no legal right to the property.
Whatever happened to breaking and entering?
I think they should break into the governor, state attorney , and law makers houses and squat with them and maybe they will change the law
I support FL and the idea that if you go into your home and a squatter is there you should defend your property and use your 2nd Amendment right
The whole idea of squatters rights is absolutely insane
Bullshit. Protecting squatters. NY change your laws. Squatters suck. They released him after arresting him WTF.

I live in a deep red state. There is literally a house that has set empty for 20 years. Very nice house in a very nice neighborhood. I don't know why the lady never sold it, but the point is that nobody has ever tried to squat in her home, and if they did they would be arrested for breaking and entering.
Growing up in a small town, we used to dream of getting out of here and living in the city. Now as an adult, I'm so happy I ended up moving back here.
