- My almost 11-year-old son decided to give HTML & CSS a try, much to my delight… so we recorded a session where we sat down and I tried to help him build his first website.

Eleven year olds are interesting. Smart enough to get it, childish enough to make it frustrating. 😂
right bro 😂😂😂
i just couldnt do it! i guess im not as good as becomeing a parent as i thought , oh well!
i learned them with 10 years
I’m 11 I learned when I was 9 no cap
Not really it depends on parents that is all
It's pretty nice to teach your son coding from this age because he will fulfill the 7 years of experience asked by HRs at 18 when he will want to get a job.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm afraid I need to agree.
expect HR will ask for 7 years of "relevant work experience" and then tell him he need to wait untill 25 to apply again 💀.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 underrated comment and extremely true
Kevin's kid is a mood. This was so much fun to watch 😄
i like how natural and unscripted it is. i can remember how hard it can be as a kid to focus on such things. would love to see more.
Me too!
I remember when I was 12 years old, got 1 book, got Turbo C++ and I trying to learn it and it was very hard, no RUclips, stackoverflow, Internet. Nowadays, the knowledge is everywhere, having a father who knows programming is a giant advantage. It just a matter of willingness to learn.
Please protect this kind soul from the hell that is JavaScript
Not at all. Javascript will make you happy.
@@portreemathstutor least masochistic coder
😒
@@portreemathstutor I haven't known happiness since I started learning JavaScript as a self-taught dev
@@westernpigeon maybe you shouldn't be programming if you don't enjoy it. Go code a website in C++
"We've the body, we've the head, and the neck". We need more of this. 😂👏
By 21 he'll have 10 years experience 😂
How to get ahead among other candidates?
1 month from now he'll be starting a RUclips channel.
This explains all those supposedly weird experience pre-requisites in job postings. They weren't un-reasonable to them because their parents are all like Kevin 😆
Kevin's son: "I suck at division".
Me too kiddo, me too.
me at the start: if you keep his attention for more than 10 minutes I'll be impressed
Interesting enough, a good rule of thumb for focus on abstract tasks in boys is: one minute of continuous focus per year of age.
Teaching boys is a particular challenge that needs to be addressed directly, a lot of people don't take the task seriously enough.
@@microcolonel oh yeah I know. I used to teach myself.
I have a son the same age and I'm laughing so hard🤣 " stands for division" "I suck at division!" that could have been him🤣🤣

Dad: Try giving a number
writes *18*
Son: That's when I can leave this house
Isee isee
"My favorite number, that's when I can leave this house"
poor Kevin 😂
So sad. 😭
I can't even explain how much this feels like me teaching things to my daughter. She's 8, but also very smart and very goofball-ish. When it's not time to learn, we laugh together constantly. But man, when I try to teach her something, it looks exactly like this.
You've got hundreds of thousands or millions of people who want to learn from you, juxtaposed with the humbling moments where your own kid doesn't care what your credentials are. They just wanna get back to video games, or at the very least, name a class "mydadsbigbutt" 😂 And just the same, parenting is the best
I learnt HTML when I was around 10 years old (way to much free time), this made me remember how i used position absolute for everything, and br tags to center 😂
sameeeeeeeeeee
Are you in FAANG now
@@Covid--kl9ff 😂😂
Then you learned css not html
I am 14 just learning and I also use position absolute for everything 😂
Mini-Kevin deserves a comeback to the channel!
The guy is so funny and adorable at the same time.
I was 13 y.o. when I got commodore 64 and book for Basic language. I thought myself programming and I'm still working as a Programmer. He's so lucky to have a father who knows this, I didn't have anyone, not even internet, hard times for sure. Great video.
Svaka cast! Ja studiram Informacione tehnologije na fakultetu trenutno. Brucos sam. Videcemo sta ce biti. Moje vreme tek treba da dodje.

I love this so much, humanizing the developer life. Best video of yours so far. Your son is so charsimatic😆
Major kudos Kevin! I was getting anxiety just watching this 😆 Christopher did great though! I tried with my daughter once and I didn't get very far at all, and that was without the distraction of a youtube video. You got a smart kid there, and funny 😀
Awesome kid, keep it up. Always appreciate your dad's effort. Not every parent teaches their young's.
Nicely done, Kevin. Try to imagine what he'll be able to do when he learns to channel all that energy in one direction. That will be one awesome corner of the internet, for sure.
Very entertaining. I had many chuckles watching the interactions.I love the way children look at things differently and make learning fun. It was also interesting watching how you simplified concepts and adjusted your teaching style to accommodate.
This was really really fun. I absolutely enjoyed it. Please make more videos like this. One thought: I believe it’d be easier for him to start with just one tag. Style it and then slowly let him know that there are more tags which are almost same. And keeping the css in the same file. Or maybe start with the style attribute and then let him know that we can actually style it remotely by “selecting” from tag. Then you can tell him that you can go further and keep it in a separate file.
He actually understood the concept of linking css right away, so there's no need to keep it in the same page, thus making the file seem larger and more complex.
@@clunkeys Yes, but the problem is in teaching too many concepts in 30 minutes to a 10yo. As he said himself he’d probably forget all of it, within a day.
“So its like a ukulele, with a head, a body and a neck” he cracked me up… such a nice and funny son 😂😂😂👍🏼
Hehe yeah, it's fun seeing the way our brains make these comparisons when learning a new topic. We relate new concepts to our existing knowledge, and then file it away with a link to it until we understand it better. A great example of that here. Pieces of an instrument === pieces of a webpage.
I watched this as a refresher course. 😃 😊
Hey Kevin, congratulations on your initiative. I have a full-stack son and today I learn with him. I'm from Brazil and follow your channel.
Dude! My daughter is exactly your son's age, and since your my fav YT tutor, this video is such a blessing! I've also been trying to get her to get into HTML and CSS. Thanks for this.
This really makes me appreciate teachers. I would never have the patience to teach over twenty 11 year olds every single day lol.
20:13 Kevin's soul left his body when lil' dude went "green!"
Imagine his boy looking back at this video after few years :D
Cool video. My 9 year old freeks out all over the place just like this when we build Lego creations, I feel the frustration brewing Kevin .... Haaaaa. Patience Daniel-Son.
Your son pronounced a couple of French words perfectly, as a French Canadian would, and he's 10 years old. That's really cool.
Bill 101 🏴
Oh! What a smart boy. Had so much fun watching you guys.
Cannot imagine what he will do witha father like Kevin. Divs will come out of the screen in future, for sure!
I'd love to see another video like this!
Legendary teacher and father!
Amazing, Kevin.
Such a lovely kid!
And I love your patience Kevin, well done!
16:28 the best class name "mydadbigbutt" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Without a doubt this made me smile more than any other dev video I’ve seen
loved this! so much fun, and rewarding, watching kids learn. was interesting to see him get more focused once realized coding is kinda fun! 😃
Good job and fun video idea. He's smart enough to get it, but funny enough to make it a task getting there. Excellent job teaching him and maintaining your patience. This will surely be a memory he won't forget.
Very nice seeing you two together! I've always wondered if you have a family or not - now I know!
I hope to witness father vs son css battle someday 😂
This was so much fun to watch! As a father of a 2yo myself, I can't wait to teach my son to code
HTML and CSS do smoochie smoochie though
God Bless your son Kevin - totally adorable; He will be a web star in no time with a father like you. God Bless the both of you for providing such an entertaining and educational video !!!
Thank you, I also start learning my 10yr old daughter to learn HTML, CSS in similar way as you video, thank you again as always your videos are amazing.
He's so cute. Love his energy. Want to see him in future videos
Honestly it's beautiful, that's definitely something i am planning todo with my kids one day
Amazing Kevin!! Your little son is so cute, and thank you for everything I've learned from you.
God bless you and your son 🥰
I contemplating the idea of maybe in the futur teach my niece basic html/css and eventually JS and this help a lot
I love this man: Keep it up. You teaching your son at 11years old, he will be css Beast
Thats so amazing to see both dad and son doing HTML N CSS 😅 Loved it 😍💯
Your son is hilarious! 😂 He's so spontaneous and witty. Thanks for posting the video.
love the enthusiasm
That was a fun watch. Thanks for sharing.
This was awesome. Loved the video. You powered through like a true trooper. 😂
Awesome video! So cool to see him learn
He has the RUclips personality already 😃 🙌
I wish someone taught me programming when I was young. Its the best time to learn anything....my dad taught me photoshop when I was young and I really appreciate those memories I had with him 🥲and the skill has served me incredibly well (designing rich ppls bathrooms, creating company logos, banners and other designs). Thanks for sharing this special moment with us! Love your channels content. 🍻
I was 11 when I started, back in 1999. I did not use it for many, many years though, but getting back into it is much easier due to it!
😆😍 so much fun! Thanks u guys!💐
This was so much fun to watch 😄 I loved It, enjoyed It.
I loved this, I'm gonna teach my daughter some CSS! Thank you so much.
4:00 That analogy was quite smart. "It's enclosed in a box so you can't see it". Wow.
This was genuinely very fun to watch ngl
Amazng Kid with lot of energy, I went down the memory lane.
how i think of it is the head tag is everything to do with telling the browser how to view your website (eg setting titles in the head, setting favicons in the head, etc.) and the body is what is bieng displayed on your website, the title tag in head displays on the browser's tab name.
Thank you for the lesson. I am still learning.
I have started learning web development when I was 10 years old. Since then I got a web-developer job 1,5 years ago, and I am 17 years old today. Keep it up Chris!
This was so entertaining, great video
Your resilience is admirable Kevin 😀
At that age Christopher is just happy to be on RUclips 😂 yet if he does follow in Kevin's footsteps he will have a guaranteed career going forward.
Omg, your son cracks me up!!!
your kid is basically me when I was that age, I remember learning a ton of card tricks as well as HTML and CSS back in the day, show him some old-scholl mismag822 vids, i think he'll love them!
Love the way its real and natural. Dude kept on saying random words and responses 😃😃
Way to go kid! Coding really is fun. Especially when you start seeing your page come to life. If you're into it, stick to it. Your dad is a great teacher for many of us and he'll definitely lead you in the right direction. Kevin, great job bringing the enthusiasm to your son. He actually gets to take something he likes and write about it via code and make it his own💚
Absolutely felt his excitement 😊
i watch the entire video with a big awe in my heart
keep it up junior mini Kevin Powell
oh sorry, not junior, just mini Kevin Powell
Dad's being serious while son is there having the time of his life playing with Daddy's work instruments😂
if my dad was like this I would have a better future and better school.
Your son is hilarious and so entertaining 😂😂🤣 He's also a really fast learner. Kid's got a great future👌
(Plus I also love the way you bond🙃)
I have a 12 year old brother and I CANNOT stress enough how similar him and Chris are. Even the way they guess. Might be just the age though haha
im also 12 lol, looks like im a few years ahead tho because i already learnt and hate javascript
Thank you for the idea. I'm also gonna teach my 10-yr old son, html and css soon, after he finished learning keyboarding.
Makes you realise how much patience teachers have. :D
Oh I am voting for a Kevin series!
This is amazingly funny to watch.
'This guy has a big brain' - my favourite comment. Well done Kevin and Chris!!
If he sticks with it he will pick it up in no time. I am impressed!! Awesome video Kevin. I hope your son falls in love with coding and follows in your footsteps.
I feel like there's a real teacher beside me when I'm learning through this video
Haha, love it, Kevin!! Can't wait until I can teach my sons React :)
Oh Criss you are so lucky that your dad teaches you HTML and CSS! I wish I would have the same luck with my dad. My dad always says that I‘m not ready for this stuff yet but I honestly don‘t care if it‘s too early for me or not.🍀👨💻
didnt look like he is ready for this to me, he is way too hyperactive lol. wait till hes a teen and depressed, will be perfect time to learn these
Yeah, very distracted and a bit all over the place, but that's pretty par for the course with him, lol
Man, you just inherited all your properties to your kid

LOL! Before even watching the whole thing, I just wanted to say that my 10 year old would have acted exactly the same way! 😂 This is going to be an awesome episode! I just know it.
What a beautiful website I see here!! God bless u my son.
I'm sure he's going to become a great developer like his father. Yes
Thank you for sharing your first website source code with us. Now I'm going to use your code for doing my work.
Awesome! Good luck, Kevin ^_^
