  • My almost 11-year-old son decided to give HTML & CSS a try, much to my delight… so we recorded a session where we sat down and I tried to help him build his first website.

    It's pretty nice to teach your son coding from this age because he will fulfill the 7 years of experience asked by HRs at 18 when he will want to get a job.

      expect HR will ask for 7 years of "relevant work experience" and then tell him he need to wait untill 25 to apply again 💀.

    I remember when I was 12 years old, got 1 book, got Turbo C++ and I trying to learn it and it was very hard, no RUclips, stackoverflow, Internet. Nowadays, the knowledge is everywhere, having a father who knows programming is a giant advantage. It just a matter of willingness to learn.

      Interesting enough, a good rule of thumb for focus on abstract tasks in boys is: one minute of continuous focus per year of age.
      Teaching boys is a particular challenge that needs to be addressed directly, a lot of people don't take the task seriously enough.

    I can't even explain how much this feels like me teaching things to my daughter. She's 8, but also very smart and very goofball-ish. When it's not time to learn, we laugh together constantly. But man, when I try to teach her something, it looks exactly like this.
    You've got hundreds of thousands or millions of people who want to learn from you, juxtaposed with the humbling moments where your own kid doesn't care what your credentials are. They just wanna get back to video games, or at the very least, name a class "mydadsbigbutt" 😂 And just the same, parenting is the best

    I learnt HTML when I was around 10 years old (way to much free time), this made me remember how i used position absolute for everything, and br tags to center 😂

    I was 13 y.o. when I got commodore 64 and book for Basic language. I thought myself programming and I'm still working as a Programmer. He's so lucky to have a father who knows this, I didn't have anyone, not even internet, hard times for sure. Great video.

    Major kudos Kevin! I was getting anxiety just watching this 😆 Christopher did great though! I tried with my daughter once and I didn't get very far at all, and that was without the distraction of a youtube video. You got a smart kid there, and funny 😀

    Very entertaining. I had many chuckles watching the interactions.I love the way children look at things differently and make learning fun. It was also interesting watching how you simplified concepts and adjusted your teaching style to accommodate.

    This was really really fun. I absolutely enjoyed it. Please make more videos like this. One thought: I believe it’d be easier for him to start with just one tag. Style it and then slowly let him know that there are more tags which are almost same. And keeping the css in the same file. Or maybe start with the style attribute and then let him know that we can actually style it remotely by “selecting” from tag. Then you can tell him that you can go further and keep it in a separate file.

      He actually understood the concept of linking css right away, so there's no need to keep it in the same page, thus making the file seem larger and more complex.

      @@clunkeys Yes, but the problem is in teaching too many concepts in 30 minutes to a 10yo. As he said himself he’d probably forget all of it, within a day.

      Hehe yeah, it's fun seeing the way our brains make these comparisons when learning a new topic. We relate new concepts to our existing knowledge, and then file it away with a link to it until we understand it better. A great example of that here. Pieces of an instrument === pieces of a webpage.

    I wish someone taught me programming when I was young. Its the best time to learn anything....my dad taught me photoshop when I was young and I really appreciate those memories I had with him 🥲and the skill has served me incredibly well (designing rich ppls bathrooms, creating company logos, banners and other designs).     how i think of it is the head tag is everything to do with telling the browser how to view your website (eg setting titles in the head, setting favicons in the head, etc.) and the body is what is bieng displayed on your website, the title tag in head displays on the browser's tab name.

    Way to go kid! Coding really is fun. Especially when you start seeing your page come to life. If you're into it, stick to it. Your dad is a great teacher for many of us and he'll definitely lead you in the right direction. Kevin, great job bringing the enthusiasm to your son.
