- This is a teardown (well, it doesn't end up very well) of a portable DVD player I found at Akihabara for 300 yen (less than $3 US), which was being sold as-is -- a "junk" item.
The camera lens had a smudge, so some parts of the video will look overexposed...

Amazing video ! Thank you!!! I bought a portable DVD player and the screen wasn’t working properly. All I had to do was take the screws off and put them back on. The screen is perfect now. A million thank you’s ! Saved me from buying a screen or paying for it to be fixed.

You are really tempting me to try a portable DVD player or photo frame for an Raspberry Pi solution! One question, though. The driver board you're using - does it have to be programmed by the manufacturer for the specific LCD display or does it just work with what you plug in to it? Thanks!
I wanted to make a Raspberry Pi enclosure that looks like a real product, so I thought using second-hand photo frames and DVD players would be a cheap and somewhat good looking solution. The driver board will be specific to the LCD display that's being used. I've had times where I was lucky that I ended up with a compatible LCD panel (the pin outs matched by comparing the datasheets of two LCD models from different manufacturers), but other times I had to order another board based on the model number of the LCD. And yes, I've had instances where I would order a board from Aliexpress, and the store would ask me which LCD panel I was connecting it to, so that they could program it before they ship it. I'm planning to make a video on how to choose LCD controller boards for LCD panels in the future, as this might not be very straight forward. Thank you for the comment!
coobird's lab You may want to have a look at Adafruit's HDMI to 40-pin TTL board. They say it only works with displays they sell but I'm guessing that's probably not the case.
+Mark Conger You're probably right about it working on other LCD panels. However, the number of pins (physical connections) doesn't guarantee compatibility, so it'll come down to looking at the datasheet to see if the signal lines match.

What's a good source for zener diodes? I know you can buy them for 18 cents but the shipping is 10 bucks! I mean a device that uses them alot.

That's something I tried looking into but didn't find an answer for yet. There may be some extension boards but I don't remember whether I actually found one. I'll add information if I ever find out.
What is the details of the battery?
Let's see... it's definitely a LiPo battery, it says it's a 7.4 V ("2S") with a capacity of 2600 mAh. The marking on the battery says WD346392P-2S; the part number seems to imply that there are 2-cells together in parallel (2P), and 2 of those are tied in series (2S), for a total of 4 cells (3.7V 1300 mAh each) stacked together, I would guess.

That player looks super cheap.
That was my impression as well -- the plastic was flimsy and the inside (like the optical drive assembly) were barely held together. I've seen these come back on the market again, and I see not-so-favorable reviews of this unit, so I'm guessing these are broken in one way or another. But at least I got an LCD out of it ;)
