I feel like it symbolizes their bond. Satoko's really only had Rika. And at this stage in their lives, they've been together for a majority of it. But that's the stuff you already know. You haven't gotten to know true pain until you saw just how harsh people can be towards Satoko just because she's a Hojo.
It's probably a little late to say this, but I DO recommend watching the og higurashi, at least the first two seasons. They really do raise the enjoyment of this new season, as I'm sure a lot of the events happening now are confusing. If you can't find the time, feel free to watch it anytime after Higurashi Gou ends. I only decided to watch the OG after it was revealed Gou was a sequel and not a remake, and I certainly don't regret it. It's a good watch!

I can somewhat relate to this situation Rika and Satoko ended up in. I have a dear friend who I grew up with since we were 6 year old. We went to same schools together for 12 years and we were always together. But after we graduated our lives took diffrent paths for the first time in over a decade, I went to study to become nurse and she headed to university. Diffrent schools far away from each other. But we stayed friends and even thou we dont see that often anymore she is still one of my closest and one of my most important friends. Rika and Satoko too might have to take diffrent paths but they still can remain as friends even if they were far away from each other.
