Hello Timm, I just bought a 645 E64, two years after I traded in my beautiful and almost perfect E63 for next to nothing. I bought a cheap high miler, with lots of problems, but thanks to your channel I did so with knowledge and confidence. A week later I have solved most of the issues. Hello Timm. Really appreciate your sharing your expertise on the amazing BMW1 I had a 635csi back in the day, and loved it so much when a low mile 645ci came along, I couldn't resist. I watched your video about doing an oil change on the N62 engines, and plan to do my own here soon. My problem is that I can't seem to find the oil you recommended here in the US. Sorry tim, i didnt really understand fully. Im a french speaking guy. If possible, write it please. I live in uk, and have the same problem with my 650I.
Great result. It’s always nice to fully understand these type of quirks. I have an very intermittent dynamic drive issue on my 06 650 that I’ve been trying to figure out for years. I don’t want to swap out the components unnecessarily as I suspect it’s an easy fix just as was the case in this video. I suspect there are many others in my position too. 🤞
I have the n62. I was smoking. I had several leaks. Even prior to the leaks I had smoke. When I changed the valve cover gaskets and other related gaskets, I took a syringe and poured Barrs valve seal conditioner over each of the springs and let it sit over night. I also changed the blow by hose set up from the snake to the 2 separate hoses. No smoke since.
Quick question. I have a 09 x5 4.8 n62 i have a choppy throttle and when im going uphill the transmission shifts at 3000 rpm. There’s no codes what so ever for the transmission or engine what should i be looking for. I clean the throttle, maf sensor, pcv valve i also did a transmission service but i cant get rid of the problem. I did adaptations as well i also got the transmission software updated. You got me worried for a minute Tim, I thought you had lost the love for the 650i lol great video though, I’m glad it was a free ish fix 👍 I’m still of the opinion that the e63 and e64 will be future classics, mine is a 630i coupe LCI and I don’t see many about these days. I spent out on new injectors this year, it didn’t make financial sense, but I don’t care, I love the car and a replacement car would have lost more in value once driven off the forecourt than the expense of the injectors, that’s how I justify it anyway 😂 keep up the good work, I’m enjoying your videos 👍
hi timm love these videos as i too own the 545 e61 which has the n62 engine, i find your videos so helpful, but i do have a query i would like to pass by you regarding this engine, of late i keep getting quite an annoying issue with the dashboard lights popping up window trap mainly then transmission and then battery then car just dies completely, and wont start even if the car has been on a good journey, ive had the AA check it and its not the battery, and i too have drop tested the battery and its a good battery, now when the car does this i have a jump pack i use at the front jump terminals may i add, and the car starts fine , please could you help a fellow n62 lover out before i burn it lol!!!
Thanks Timm! Great video as always. Enjoyable ride along too. That white E46 that you passed on your block was nice looking. I miss my e46 convertible.....
Timm, first off, thanks for all the videos. Very, very cool. I had a couple questions I'd hope you could answer. First off, is the HT-12 coolant a suitable alternative to the g48? It is difficult to find the g48 in BMW brand (Zerex is available), even online sometimes. I have read that the HT-12 is ok to use but I would like the best for the 650. Which leads to the pcv and mechatronix seals. Would you personally use a cheaper pcv or get OEM BMW part? Same with Mechatronix seals and solenoids? Do you think that with these parts it would be ok to use non oem replacements. It seems I have fallen into a gem, however, we have no true way of knowing how the previous owner treated her. Same for the mechanics. Trustworthy? Who can say. After watching your videos, though. I have decided there are a few things I have the ability to do to keep her in great shape and give me a bit more peace of mind. Thanks for your time and the videos. -Adam
Hi Timm. I also had a question for you regarding oil. I live in Moab Utah where it gets above 100 degrees F. regularly. Do you think it wise to use 5w40 in my location. We are also at 4800ft elevation. It was suggested to me by a mechanic who works on German vehicles. Yet all of the records I received from previous owner read 5w30. What are your thoughts? I have already purchased two filters, you know, just to be prepared for inflation, haha. One is Mann and the other Mahle. I'm almost certain they are the same!
At least by idling the car those times you’ve kept the stem seals wet. During lockdown 1 my 550i stayed in the garage and didn’t turn a wheel for a couple of months. Found it rather smokey when I came to use it again. With some use it soon cleared up thankfully.
Have considered adding a catch can / oil air separator to your CCV system? I have an N62 E70 X5 with the exact same issue as yours and am seriously considering 2 pro vent 200 catch cans . The car is doing mostly suburban driving and frequently caught in heavy, stopped traffic. The car has even fouled the cat converters because of the amount of oil being sucked into the motor. I have replaced the CCV system, this reduced but not eliminated the problem. I would appreciate your comments or ideas. Mike
I think the main problem is a lack of manifold vacuum due to engine power being controlled by valve lift rather than throttle position - a catch-can may work!
Even with the smallest vacuum leak can cause oil to be sucked into the inlet manifold even more so than with a fully sealed system, correct? If that is the case, then I am sure that so many N62s are mis-diagnosed with bad valve stem seals. Every time I see an N62 at a junk yard, I remove the CCV intake hose and sure enough, it is full of oil (usually dripping out!) Valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, camshaft sensor o-rings, valvetronic sensor o-rings, dipstick o-ring, oil filler cap, vacuum pump o-rings, CCV diaphragms & associated hoses could all be sources of vacuum leaks, correct?
I have also noticed that unplugging the MAF sensor will keep my N62 from building up oil inside the manifold during idle. I assume because unplugging the sensor deactivates valvetronic, thus increasing vacuum since the throttle is now closed?
Yes, if you disconnect the MAF then idle is throttle-body controlled rather than valve lift - and that means an increase in manifold vacuum. Usually a sign that the valve covers are filled with varnish which stops the oil separation working. Yes, many N62's in the scrapyard with only popped PCV valves!
I only see a brief, but significant puff of smoke from my 2007 650i after I've been at a stoplight for more than 2 minutes. If I were to splurge on a valve seal replacement, can I expect to see an improvement?
Hi Timm, I'm afraid mine has a similar problem, I checked both PCV values and both are good with no leaks. You mentioned that it's possible to repair the valve stem seals for around £800-£1000, can you suggest a garage that would do that job?
Tim I recently replaced the crankcase vent valves on my 07 750i with N62 and now it sometimes makes a sort of harmonic sound but doesn't last long is there a chance I didn't get them installed properly the ones I removed had no tears in the diaphrams any input greatly appreciated
Hey timm im 17 and recently bought a 1999 bmw 740i with the m62 4.4L v8 its got 197k miles or 317km on it the car is in brand new shape as the old owners restored the inside and body it runs and drives fine but there is a ticking noise coming from the engine its not very loud just just enough you can hear it with the driver door open I have very little experience with these cars, the past owners said they have never done anything with the timing guides or tensioner but never had any problems out of it and always changed the oil when needed I was wondering if its something I should be concerned about as I'm in school and this is my only ride as of now, thanks
I had the smoke problem intermittently (N62B44). Embarrassing when happening but it never lasted long. I don't know what caused the problem to appear and disappear. Just another quirk of the 'love it or hate it' N62. Happy driving!
Hi Timm, as always a very informative video. My 545i is unfortunately smoking quite badly. I’m trying the liqui moly additive route but it’s not really helping. I was quoted around 2.5k euro to do the valve stem seals so I was surprised to hear it can be done for around 1k. Is that throwing rate nowadays? Thanks a lot and stay safe
Make sure you do the PCV's first ruclips.net/video/Yy_Vzir5xco/видео.html and give it a good 100 miles with a bit of thrashing thrown in and then take it from there...
Agree with Tim on the above reccomendations. First start with the crank case PCV diaphragms and cleaning or on my case replacing the dry rotted breather hoses. Especially if you have the older version with the one hose that splits into three. The new version is just two hoses. Both items are cheap to purchase and easy DIY in 20 minutes.
@@gotmylk I will try this first. Which breather hoses are you referring to? Do you have a part number of both the splitting one and the better two hose replacement? Thank you
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thank you for the instructions Timm. Also, which oil do you recommend for this engine? The roof can be difficult to fix - so make sure it is not torn, raises and lowers - as do the windows, the rear windows do fail and are difficult to fix. No smoke, easy start, quiet engine and soft gearchanges are all very important!

Timing changes.... if it’s the loud ticking
This will help you decide what the noise is: www.meeknet.co.uk/e31/BMW_M60_M62_M62TU_Engine_Scary_Noises.htm
Thanks i belive it is the vanos unit as the car runs great and sounds good starting up its just a off putting noise
@@SovietKv1 how’s it going
15:50 This is exactly the moment why we buy V8's and we take really good care to maintain them proper way.
Too true Bargla!
I had the smoke problem intermittently (N62B44). Embarrassing when happening but it never lasted long. I don't know what caused the problem to appear and disappear. Just another quirk of the 'love it or hate it' N62. Happy driving!
Thanks Wekkel, thoroughbred horses can be the same!
I read different opinions as to Shell SLX 5W30 or 10W60 for more spirited driving. Liqui Moly, Shell, so many opinions. I just started doing all what's in my reach myself, so I have many questions :) Thank you

I'm going to have a look at an E64 650i this week, What are the main 3 points I should look out for, obviously will check it's been maintained and serviced properly but things like checking the roof and for roof leaks, where to best look etc. Thank you.
The roof can be difficult to fix - so make sure it is not torn, raises and lowers - as do the windows, the rear windows do fail and are difficult to fix. No smoke, easy start, quiet engine and soft gearchanges are all very important!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks Tim, when you say no smoke, it's going to smoke a bit if it's started from cold, but that smoke should stop after about 1 minute, correct ? I'm looking for continuous smoke I'm guessing? As per the amount that was coming out of yours when you were reversing onto your drive ?
Hello I must come to you with my bmw 6 4.4 v8 for a correct diagnosis 😀
Thanks Krzysztof!
I need to admit England is very green in February
Yes, it was a mild winter and early spring last year!
Hi Tim. Do you recommend a carbon clean before changing the engine oil?
No, not if you have always used good fuel and oil....
Hi Tim, My N62 (X5 e53) will briefly blow oil smoke after idling at a long set of traffic lights, could this still be crank case pressure related or worn valve stem seals?
Always best to replace the PCV's, clean out the pipework and then give it a 100 miles or so....
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thanks Tim. I have already replaced the PCVs and more than a hundred, I'll reconfirm clean and recheck the vacuum hoses and if the smoke persists I'll assume seals.
Have you tried an oil catch can my bmw e38 would smoke and when I install it never smoked again
No, and it would be a bit tricky on the N62 with the OSV's being part of the valve cover!
Hello, I’m recently looking for an used bmw 650i. I paid visit to a local car dealer, finding that there was a little bit smoke coming from the bonnet. Is that a normal thing for an old bmw or something goes wrong with the engine?
The engine bay shouldn't produce smoke - it was probably oil getting out of the valve covers and dropping on the exhaust manifolds
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
That’s the first time I’ve seen a bmw use indicators. :O
Obviously a mistake!
Great vid Duffers
Thanks Duffers!
Random question but I have 650i as well do you knwo what crank hp is on them ? Also have you ever had it on a dyno ?
Around 367 BHP (Euro classification) at the crank, and no, keep away from Dyno's they put excessive strain on the drivetrain!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation whats your thoughts on a remap will this damage the car?
800 quid.... not in US. I paid several grand last year on my X.
That’s going to put a lot of minds to rest, nice one Timm
Thanks Roy, that was the plan!

What do you do when your key gets washed in the washing machine? A VIN coded CA key from BMW still has to be coded in ISTA for Comfort Go. 99 percent of the info I see is rubbish. This would be good material to cover.
Good plan Jason!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation bla bla bla. Learned alot about CAS 3+ this week. These N62 motors have low tension rings which stick from time to time. 5w40 Shell Helix in UK is the equivelent of our Pennzoil in the US. N62TU respond well to this oil(Vanos and oil consumption). 30W oil runs past the exhaust valve guide seals and cruds up the back of the exhaust valves with blowby from stuck rings....
I'm looking to buy a 06 bmw 645i with 100,000 miles on it. I'm very scared after seeing your videos lol

As a Porsche owner I would say "what smoke". However I do have to say my N73 does not smoke at all even after periods of idleing. Saying that the N73 uses twice the oil per mile (1 litre for 4k miles) than my old M62.
I still love the M62 amongst all the haters out there!
can you put catch cans on n62
I think the real fix is to replace the valve covers as it I'd impossible to clean them out
I love this it's my dream
Your thumbnail had me worried for a bit.
Idk why but my 750i will burn oil randomly and it will do it one day and not do it for another couple weeks
id change the oil every 5k with these engines
Yes
Yes, mine is done at 3K now in lockdown!
Great video Timm. Don't be so concerned about people being out and about during "lockdown". Don't be fooled be the reported "case" numbers either.
Thanks!

That oil in the manifold would tend to harm the catalysts wouldn't it?
And yes I wish I had an E28 (535i).
