Homer | The Iliad - bk.1 - The Anger of Achilleus

In Book 1 of The Iliad, a plague sent by Apollo devastates the Achaeans after Agamemnon dishonors the priest Chryses by refusing to return his daughter. Achilleus and Agamemnon quarrel when Agamemnon demands compensation for releasing Chryseis, leading to Agamemnon seizing Achilleus’ prize, Briseïs. Feeling dishonored, Achilleus withdraws from battle and appeals to his mother, Thetis, to ask Zeus to favour the Trojans as punishment for Agamemnon’s arrogance. Zeus agrees, despite Hera’s objections, creating tension among the gods. This opening establishes themes of honour, pride, and divine intervention, setting the stage for the epic conflict to unfold.
The Iliad is one of the oldest and most celebrated works of Western literature, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. Composed around the 8th century BCE, this epic poem is set during the final year of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict between the Greeks (Achaeans) and Trojans over the abduction of Helen. Rich in poetic imagery and timeless themes, The Iliad explores the wrath of Achilles, the futility of war, and the pursuit of honor and glory amidst the horrors of battle. This foundational text delves into human emotions, the influence of the gods, and the struggles of mortals against fate, making it a cornerstone of classical literature and a timeless exploration of human nature.
