      yeah Barry them lids on the jars are used for canning purposes, you usually either just take your hot liquid or whatever you fill them with an put the lid on an let it sit out at room temperature an the jar will seal itself, or you can take an put it in whats called a water bath for how ever many minutes an then just turn the heat off an let them sit in the water an they will seal, when I make my jalapeno pickles though I always just take the hot jar of them an put in the fridge overnight an it also seals.

    You needed less cream in the jar and much, much more shaking, lol. This is how my Aunt does her whipped cream. Thankfully she has plenty of nieces and nephews to use as "cream whippers", lol. We all handed the jar onto the next cousin when our arms got tired. But you do need to shake it for a good 15 mins straight. Lee :)

    The lid of the mason jar is in two pieces for two reasons. The outer ring is there to hold the flat lid in place during the canning process. Once the process is complete, you can remove the ring and store the jar without it, freeing the ring up to use on another jar. However, if the food in the jar will not be used all at once (such as jam), you will need a ring to hold the lid in place as long as there is still food in the jar.
    i personally prefer to keep the ring on the jar while storing it to help prevent damage to the lip of the jar, as one with a crack or chip must not be used for food preservation.
    Secondly. it is cheaper and easier to manufacture the flat lid, thus making it less expensive for the home canner to use, as the lids are a one-time use only item. The rings may be used again and again as long as they are not rusted or dented. Cheers!

    The cream works better in a larger jar to let more room for air to be shaken in. The jar should be only 1/4-1/3 full of cream. A whisk definitely works better. Great fun you guys 😆😆😆

    I have successfully done the cream to whipped cream hack before. I did use a lot less cream at the time so that I had more "air space" so it would fluff up faster. I actually used to pretend to be a bartender and do this but with some dish soap plus a splash of water when I was younger. Shake it so well that it would be a thick soapy foam!

  • @goodolddoug889

    I was so confused by the whipped cream trick. lol I made whipped cream almost daily when I worked in a hotel kitchen, and it was always just 18-20% cream with white refined sugar and vanilla extract whisked in a bowl. I mastered that to the point where it was basically a lovely airy vanilla ice cream every time, and now anything like Cool Whip is just blah. The shaking trick seems like even more work than just breaking out a whisk, electric or manual, and mixing it all up. You can always re-whisk for at least a day or two from storage in a fridge if you're not entertaining.
    Anyway, you and your wife are just delightful to watch, and you've been reminding me of how much fun and how inspiring cooking can be. :)

    Awesome video yet again Barry. My favourite is definitely the Rosemary skewer. So simple, but knowing how far a small thing like Rosemary can go, definitely my favourite out of all of these.
    The popsicle one was also very nostalgic as I remember that as a kid and knew what was about to happen (like Mrs. Barry was)

    I've done butter with whipping cream the same way you tried to do the whipped cream. I just poured whipping cream into a glass jar and shook it. At first it does make whipped cream. Maybe you added the sugar too soon and the emulsion couldn't happen? But if you try it again, don't shake too long because you'll get butter! Good luck!
    Edit: you do have to shake the jar for quite a while.

    As an ardent home-canner, Mason jars are my stock in trade. The threadless inner lid seals to the rim of the jar under heat. The threaded ring holds the lid in place during the process (either boiling water bath or pressure canning). Once the jars have cooled to room temperature, the ring is removed, and the lid will have suctioned onto the rim of the jar, blocking out oxidizing air. Food preservation at its finest!

    If you shake the double cream in the jar foring enough it will turn to butter and you will be kept with buttermilk in the bottom of the jar. Alternatively if you whisk it for long enough it will also turn to butter with the residue of buttermilk. With the butter you can then add salt to it to your own liking.

    I love these hack videos, i think the cream one needs shacking a lot longer, just keep going it will happen. I find it easier to use a mixer (if you have one) but this is the same process for icecream making in one o those kids cups. A hack I use is using a hand mixer to mash potatoes instead of a masher, less middle n less lumps 👍🏻

    For Holidays with my family we make butter using a mason jar anf Heavy cream and all the kids have to shake it until their arms get tired then pass it to the next and so on until it turns to butter. Then we use that with our dinner. It's a lot of fun and the kids stay busy and out of our way in the kitchen.

    You can make butter with heavy whipping cream and a jar as well. I do know it works, I made my own more than once (involves vigorous shaking of the jar. Expect a workout). Just fill a jar half full, add a little salt- or wait till near the end, and proceed to shake your arms off. Pour off the buttermilk as you go along, or you get a sloppy mess.

  • @sixgunsam79
    @sixgunsam79 7 лет назад

    The whipped cream trick does work. It just takes a bit of time. If you keep going after the whipped cream, you can get butter and a little buttermilk to go with breakfast. We always have heavy cream in the house for my wifes coffee, so if we run out of butter, I just shake like hell and make enough until the next day. (The whipped cream is good too, just don't shake as long). Cheers

    Just a tip for peeling hard boiled eggs. After they're done cooking lightly tap each egg so the shell has a crack in it, and then have them sit in an ice water bath to cool off. Water will get in through the crack and under the shell and make it peel off super easily.

    Both the "shake" hacks for the garlic and the egg works a lot better with a mason jar, one egg at a time with some water in it and you'll have the shell off in like 5 shakes. For the garlic you don't have to peal it at all, if the jar is big enough just pop the whole thing in there and give it like 5-10 seconds of hard shaking and you'll have them all pealed. Also for the cream, you didn't shake it nearly long or hard enough (based on the video anyway) it takes a good 1 minute of shaking. Also you can be a bit cheeky and put something in there to add resistance. The spiral from a whisk will do.

  • @misskarla1377
    @misskarla1377 7 лет назад

    Even better than the Mason jar for whipping cream or making butter is using a water bottle with ribbed sides. That gives the cream extra friction and whips it more nicely. With a Mason jar, it is easier to shake it into butter. You don't need to add ice, the butterfat will separate on its own while you are shaking, and your cream will 'whip' better if you get it started thickening before you add your sugar. And remember, if you over shake it like you did the garlic and the eggs, you will have butter.

    the seal on a mason jar is to be thrown away after being used once for canning. the rubber ring becomes deformed. it can be used for other things (scrapping)but not canning again. the ring is reusable for many times. we can hunreds of jars of veggies and furits a year.

    Why mason jar lids are in two parts (lid & ring) :
    The ring is only used to hold the lid on until it properly seals (consult any canning instructions), then you remove the ring until you open the jar to use the contents, at which time you can use the ring again (keeping your jar in the fridge at this point) .

    The ring comes off the jar once it is sealed because your not supposed to store the canned food with the ring on in order to check the seal 😊

    As usual, loved the vid.
    But Barry, it's a garlic BULB, not a clove. The cloves are the little bits in the bulb that you have to peel.

    the cream hack: put the empty jar in the freezer to it's ice cold then put the cream in and shake for about 8 min then it should work

    That marshmallow icing trick would be great with chocolate cupcakes and then put some graham crackers on top for a S'mores cupcake.

    Why the tops of canning jars are in two parts (lids & rings):
    The ring is only used to hold the lid on when it's loose (before sealing & after opening). Rings can be reused, lids cannot. Reduces waste and saves money, because you don't toss out the used rings, you sterilize and reuse them.
    You did know that, after the processed (canned, sealed) jars have cooled down you're supposed to remove the rings, until you open a jar.

    You gotta shake the cream a lot harder and a lot longer than that, but don't go too far or you'll make butter.
