Explanation for the end of the Wolf boss fight
The one who stopped the fight was the real Sun Wukong himself. The glowing words on his staff read “Ruyi Jingu Bang” which is the name of the legendary weapon used by Wukong. This means that this entire time, we weren’t watching Sun Wukong but the Six Eared Macaque who claims himself to be Wukong. This explains why the game is called “Black Myth” as the Macaque represents Wukong’s dark side.
At the beginning, the old man says that some say Wukong never finished the Journey to The West. This is because there is a theory that Wukong died in the story and the Six Eared Macaque took his place.
As a Chinese person who grew up with this story, there are no words to express just how legit this whole thing is. The tune at the very end of the trailer was from the Wukong TV series from 1986. This is legit.

the end screen title also says white bone's descendent, retracing journey to the west. That old man that tells the story is probably wukong. You are playing his son, and your mother is the white bone monster that wukong supposedly killed, but instead had a kid with. The buddha found out and punished wukong by replacing him with the 6 eared macaque. That six ear finished the journey to the west and become a god and that's the character that stops you from killing that wolf.

Man the fact that everyone thought this was fake, and would never come out. And now it's one of the best selling games of ALL time, in four days, is INSANE. And makes me so happy.

Some context for the game:
Game Science Studio is an indie Chinese developer formed from ex-employees of Tencent. They had a vision for a AAA Journey to the West-themed game when they were still working for Tencent, but to the EA of China, that kind of game doesn't make money, so there was a tonne of meddling with it, trying to turn it into an MMO wallet trap until the employees got sick of it and formed Game Science.
The current project Black Myth: Wukong started in 2018 with 13 people. As of this trailer, it's still only about 30. The primary purpose of this trailer was to get exposure and recruit more talent so they can kick this game's development into overdrive.
My dialogue translations for those of us who don't speak Mandarin or read Chinese (may not be 100%; I went for preserving the spirit of the dialogue rather than literal translation, as there are cultural and linguistic nuances that don't translate well)

Soil/Earth Spirit: Oh, up ahead is the Temple of Guanyin (bodhisattva, or enlightened one, who represents mercy and features prominently in Journey to the West). And to think, it used to be full of the scent of incense (he's lamenting the corruption of the mountain and temple).
Soil/Earth Spirit: Such a shame about the fire *gestures at the skulls on the ground* . Afterwards it was rebuilt, but the the hearts of the people (i.e. goodness) were burned to ash...what use is it to fix a broken temple?
Soil/Earth Spirit: *hears howl* I'm out of here! *disappears into the ground* We'll rendezvous after you pass the plank road ahead!

Soil/Earth Spirit: Shhh! Stay quiet! Take care not to alert that giant hound! Behind that courtyard is an ally of the yaoguai of Black Wind Mountain, he calls himself Ling Xu Zi. If you continue on your current path *hears another howl* - oh no! Little monkey, run quick - it's not too late! There's no coming back if you go through that gate!

The characters on the stick that glow here are 如意金箍棒 (ru yi jin gu bang). This translates literally into "As-you-wish golden hoop rod", but a better translation for English-speaking audiences might be "Obedient Golden Staff" or "Compliant Golden Rod". The idea is that the staff does what you want it to, including grow as thick or long as it needs to be, being flexible enough to bend into a hoop, and multiply into multiple rods. This is the legendary weapon of the Monkey King Sun Wukong in the Journey of the West story, the implication of this scene is that we have not been playing as the real monkey king up to now, and the one who stops us is the real one. This led most Chinese netizens to speculate that Black Myth: Wukong is the story of the Six-Eared Macaque, another mystical simian who impersonates the Monkey King in the JttW story and is "killed" by Wukong. However, after their encounter, the Monkey King's personality changes to be less rebellious, so a lot of people theorize that it was actually the Macaque who killed the Monkey King and continued the impersonation to attain buddahood.

The eight characters written in the calligraphic style are 白骨之后 重走西游 ("after the white bone, revisit the Journey to the West").
"White bone" here refers to 白骨精 or White Bone Spirit, one of the more memorable and named villains in the original novel. The White Bone Spirit knows she can't beat the Monkey King in a straight fight, so she uses guile and skullduggery. She shapeshifts into three "innocent" civilians - a village girl who got lost, an elderly woman who's looking for her daughter, and an old man who is looking for his wife and daughter. Each time the main characters encounter her in these disguises, the Monkey King is the only one who has the ability to see past the disguise and he "kills" the demon in front of his horrified companions who only see him murdering a child and her elderly parents. This leads to Tang Seng, the monk whom Wukong is supposed to protect, to exile Wukong from the party. Later, Tang Seng is captured by the White Bone Spirit, and Bajie (another party member) begs Wukong to return and save all their asses, setting a precedent that repeats itself a lot in the story.
Anyway, here "after the white bone" is a clever metaphor for the way the Game Science devs were treated by Tencent. The idea is that Tencent is the White Bone Spirit who shows up asking for their help in supposedly good faith, but in actuality wants to hurt them and their passion project. So "after the white bone", really means "after the nefarious influence of Tencent" - and the second half of the quote, "revisit the Journey to the West" is self-explanatory.

12:59 - 13:02
Here we see the 四大天王, or Four Great Heavenly Kings. They are derived from the Lokapāla of the Buddhist tradition (from ancient India), and act as the guardians of the four cardinal directions in Chinese mythology. They're basically warrior kings that are often depicted as triumphing over evil. Western audiences can think of depictions of the archangel Michael kicking Lucifer's butt to the cosmic basement during the rebellion - these Four Heavenly Kings are often depicted as triumphing over evil in the same way. During the Monkey King's rebellion against Heaven, he defeats these four along with a massive laundry list of other warriors of Heaven.
13:03 - 13:05
Here we see Wukong on his nimbus cloud, which is what he uses to fly (Dragon Ball fans can feel free to cheer here). We also see what I think is a white dragon, which could be the White Dragon Horse from the Journey to the West novel. In the book he was one of the sons of the Dragon King of the West Sea, and is initially supposed to be executed (I believe it was for offending some big-shot in Heaven? Can't remember) before having his sentence be changed to helping the monk Tang Seng complete his journey. He eats Tang Seng's horse by accident because he didn't recognize him, and transforms into a horse for most of the journey as penance.

This is definitely Wukong's rebellion against Heaven. It's just the cannon fodder here, so I think we can reasonably expect bigger and more impressive fights after this sequence.
The music that starts at 13:56 is a massive nostalgia bomb for Chinese people, the vast majority of whom (I'm not exaggerating, I'm guessing at least a billion people) have watched the 1986 adaptation of JttW. It's a reinterpretation of the opening theme for that song, and it's analogous to Bohemian Rhapsody or Take Me Home, Country Roads in terms of longevity and reach. We're talkin' tipsy dads and uncles belting it out-of-tune at every karaoke after a family gathering, that sorta vibe.
Explanatory notes:
- Wine (not "wine" in the European tradition, but a type of alcohol today preserved as baijiu in China) in ancient China was traditionally distilled and served from jugs that are shaped kind of like the pottery of ancient Greece
- Yaoguai are pretty much monsters or spirits, anything malicious and supernatural - some of you might know yokai from Japanese mythology, that term was a loanword from Chinese and means the same thing although Japan has its own specific monsters
-The Soil or Earth Spirit (both translations work tbh) is sort of a helpful guide type character who scouts out places without being seen (he is able to move freely underground which is why you see him disappearing and re-appearing all the time)

I think "after White Bone" may mean something else, because the creators used to make DZS at Tencent (a online game based on Journey to the West) and DZS Got interference from Tencent after it was produced to the white bone :(

The last part where Wukong is fighting hoards of enemies in the sky and swinging his extended pole staff around shows the frame rate dropping due to how many enemies are on screen! Shows that it's real gameplay. Good sign!!!
another sign of it been a real gameplay is, when he fights the wolf boss, and monkey jumped into the air to do his ground slam move. the boss moved, and pushed the mokey's model with it. that's something happens in games only. You never see CG movies have model collisions like that

its not even a GAME, is a 15-20 min demo that took them 5 year to make, there is no game behind it
It is infact 100% legitimate. The developers themselves, astoundingly enough, actually criticized aspects of the game which they felt were lackluster and required work, such as the water not having any fluid physics and the fur (according to them) needing better rigging/ texture work as well.
Yong did a really great follow up video on this topic, covering the developer's extremely humble and modest response to the footage going viral, and their plans and ambition for the project in general. You should check it out!
Get ready to be spied on when they make you agree to their terms before you start the game.

For those that don't know, the Journey to the West mythology with Wukong is what Dragonball and Goku is based off of.
For you who don't know this, the Japanese name of Sun Wukong is Son Goku, its a straight rip off!

Tho there is an awful, awful news.
Other companies (reminding you, majority of Chinese video game industry are money hunger dog sht company who doesn’t give a rat fking ass about actual video game, all they want is to milk their player base and please the share holders) are now literally digging away their work force, be that is people working on coding, art, modeling or whatever. He doesn’t exactly say this (the exact statement he said can be roughly translated as “please, oh the big names of the industry, please don’t try to take away our staffs, yours are all talented individuals and all you need to do is treat them well. There is no need to dig ours).
There has already been “insider rumors” when the trailer is released that some staffs have been swayed. After all the big ones like Tencent and Netease, being shtholes they want, can offer a way better salary. I really hope this isn’t the case, for if it is true we will never see this game be born.

When a game looks so good you refuse to believe it's real.
That old man appeared in 6:00 is the lord of land and soil. Basically in the Chinese Myths, there are many of these lords and they have their own territories. These lords know everything happened on their land and their existence is tied to the land. Normally is a god or higher being passed by and wants to know about the land, the god/being would just knock the ground to call for the lord of land and soil to answer their doubts.( Only if the god/being is good of course), the Chinese people normally worship the lord for harvest. However, as you can tell from the game scene, these lords are weak and cannot battle, if any evil occupies their land they can only call for help.
Basically, this old man in the game scene introduces himself as the lord of the hill they step on, he is telling the monkey about what happened to the shrine/temple and warned him of the danger so that the monkey can run/hide. I am guessing the spiky head of the lord represent the roots from plants since they were underground.

ARMYALEX It’s a deity (or deities if u wish) Chinese worshipped. It is called 土地公 and 土地 means earth/land/soil, 公means lord, it is a spirit, not a “god”. Not all Chinese deities are called as “god”. There are many others, Saints, Lord Yama, Buddha, Dragon Kings, Heaven Bureaucrats, etc. All these thanks to many major religions and folk lore coexisting and mix mash their pantheon instead of beating the living sht out of each other like in Middle East.

The most credible theory right now is that the "real" Wukong we see stopping our character's attack is the six eared macaque, who hijacked Wukong's role during the Journey to the West, and we're playing the real and depowered Wukong on his quest for vengeance and righteous retribution.

the 6 eared is a master of disguise and shapeshifting, basically a very good copycat, he can do almost everything Wu Kong can do with a little twist in it. He stole Wu Kong's identity during journey of west.

It’s crazy how if it weren’t for Journey To The West, we wouldn’t really have Dragon Ball that we love and adore to this day
To expand on that we probably wouldn't have Shounen anime as we know it. Since most of them take inspiration from Dragonball, which in turn takes inspiration from JTTW.
Never watched Dragon Balls, but I knew of its existence, for me there were Pokemons and Digimons, and Naruto. If it weren't for DBZ, there would be something else.

It did, but almost every battle shounen to come after Dragon Ball has taken inspiration from it or taken inspiration from something Dragon Ball influenced. Hell, arguably even a good chunk of non-battle shounen have taken from Dragon Ball in some way. For example, Pokemon's Mega Evolution is essentially Pokemon's take on Super Saiyan. Even moreso when you look at the anime and Ash-Greninja.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a western take on Journey into the west and it's actually pretty good for when it was made 2010. Too bad more people didn't play it when it came out.
That was one of the few games I've played where I thought the DLC was better than the main game. Playing as Pigsy on his quest to build a robot girlfriend was hilarious and awesome

Just to add a footnote, in the original novel he actually turned his staff to the size of a needle and hide it into his ear, and you can actually see how he pinched the 'needle' out of his ear just before he was about to execute the wolf. And to be honest this troubled me since I was a kid as I've always wondered if the needle would damage his ear drum lol!

@@HarshNerf Lots of times what they show off is pre-rendered on a PC that has specs way beyond the average consumer market *and* they also touch it up in post and editing. Sometimes they also make a (tech) demo level specifically for a trailer, one which wouldn't or couldn't be the same in a full game. In these cases what they show off in "gameplay" trailers may not even be possible on current hardware. I'm not saying this is what they've done here, but Joe's scepticism is at least somewhat well-founded. Never give in to the hype machine until you actually get to play the game yourself. Then if you like it, hype away at your heart's content haha.

1. Wukong (Goku, same thing, different language) has the most iconic and arguably the best weapon in the entire trailer (如意金箍棒, as written on the staff carried by the armoured monkey king after the boss fight)
2. Wukong has the habit of shrinking his staff into his ears, so this is an accurate reference
3. The old short guy is a spirit/god of the earth, in charge of a specific territory
4. One of Wukong's most famous skills is to transform. In the official lore, he can transform into 72 different types of things, and here we see him using this skill to fight
5. Another skill he has is to transform his hair into monkey fighters, as in the lore
6. The 4 giants from the horizon are called the four heavenly gods, who aren't only in the lore of Journey to the West, but in other Chinese mythos too, and can also be seen in many Buddhist or Taoist temples
7. The white dragon flying in front of him is literally called the little white dragon. In the lore, he was the son of a dragon king, and later on joined the journey by turning into a white horse Tang Seng rode, long story.
8. The end fight is the battle against the 100,000 warriors in heaven, which actually happened relatively at the beginning of Journey to the West. This makes me think that they are playing with the timeline of the original lore
9. The end song is actually the main theme song from the TV series Journey to the West, which carries the world record of being replayed (the entire series) more than 3000 times on TV

they actually released this in the hopes of recruiting new talent in order to finish the game. I believe they're already backed by a publisher and are just looking to complete the project. unfortunately i've heard that a lot of the developers are being head-hunted due to how amazing this game looks and that may hamper the completion of this project.
but the good news is, is that since this has garnered so much attention they may be able to replace any developers they lose with people of equal talent. i guess we'll just have see. either way, the game looks like a dream come true personally and i sincerely hope everything works out for the studio.

Dude, mythology in general is a huge untapped pool for fantasy games, stories, and film. Too much focus on Greek and maybe Norse myths, and not enough on the multitude of pantheons out there. I want to see the Egyptian pantheon, the South American pantheon (eg. Mayan, Aztec, Olmec, etc.), the various African pantheons (eg. Yoruba, etc), Native American, Polynesian, and more. Every culture has their myths, and they're always fascinating. It's how those myths have survived for so long.

The bloods effects are “allowed” for Chinese made games (by allowed, means the authority in charge, ministry of culture, pretend it doesn’t exist). It exist 80% to block imported game until they receive their shares through one way or another.
Big titles such as World of Warcraft still have some skulls here and there. Tho all bloods are gone. Another bizarre thing is this only apply to video game. Anime that include blood spraying everyone or a dude cut in half? That’s totally fine. As long as there is no exposed genitalia’s then it is fine. The problem originated from the facts there is no age grading system for cultural products. When Chairman Jiang was in office he tried one, that turned out quite bad cuz parents are not happy with their child buying adult graded films as local sellers are happy as long as they got paid. They have got more important things to do so they just say “fk it” to the whole thing. Probably should have left some one to alter and supervise the whole thing tho, instead of yeet everything out of the way.
Steam and Valve have managed to jump around the importing mechanics bs, since the platform has been imported to China, the games on it is not. Unless there is some extreme cases, such as CoD. When Tencent want every CoD players to play their trash CoD online, by not making CoD online a good game, but forbid everyone from playing actual CoD. This is by no means the higher ups are not aware, but it seems like whoever in charge for steam is quite chill with the current status.
However by no means can any streamer stream anything video-game that include bloods and extreme violence. Most streaming platforms have include the “auto-censor” function that streamer can turn on that change blood to green and but mosaic on violent scene.
It is some really fking bs thing, no body knows why it is here, since decades ago there was literally Chinese made tv shows that include extremely violence. People constantly joked that they are treated as giant babies, and there is a running meme that bloods are in fact green, and random thing comes with it like earth has been infiltrated by aliens.
now the censorship has started to be applied on Chinese webtoons too. i read a webtoon and the color of blood changed from red to black, and the gore scenes where limbs, etc are getting cut off are hidden behind speech bubbles to censor the scenes.

When you're fighting hundreds of enemies, of course there will be frame rate drops. Plus, it is still in pre-alpha.

My point was that they didn’t bother “touching it up” or covering it with smoke and mirrors like most publishers will do. Compare it to EA and Ubisoft presentations. Anthem and Rainbow Six Siege comes to my mind easily. Lol. As for glitches, a noticeable one is at 7:48 the enemy moves and is frozen in place until hit. But yeah, its still years away from release many things will get ironed out. Super hyped for this game

Sony are Japanese not Chinese so there is no National Link, Microsoft have way more money than Sony, Microsoft have been buying exclusive rights to a lot of games recently one of them being Chinese developed Bright Memory Infinite And Microsoft are not restricting games to Consoles meaning if Game Science did get bought by Microsoft they would make a lot more money than they would with Sony.

All I can say is that this looks amazing. The graphics are great, the story is a classic and a good one, the gameplay looks like dark souls so its right up my ally. Please let this game legit! Because I would absolutely love this
This is a very humble company, based on some Chinese interview, they actually make more than we thought. the whole story, most of the bosses, the fighting style, all 72 abilities for Wukong. they all done, they just need some polish of the game , and fix some part they don't like, they want the game looks real. But, now they got a serious problem, as we know ,they post this vid try to hire people, but , now some Chinese and international big company trying to steal employee from them........ they already short of people, pls don't do that......now they shut down all interviews and investment. they just want close the door, and make a good game. Why here is another WUKONG? Here I wanna add some background and true hidden stories about WUKONG.
1，The true and false Monkey King is a chapter of Journey to the West, because the disobedient Wukong had a conflict with Tang Seng and knocked him down. However, in the the book, it is said that fake Wukong was the one who defeated Tang Seng, and no one can tell who is the real and who is the fake. Their combat effectiveness is also the same, and they even have the same weapon-the golden hoop.
In the end, the Buddha distinguished the real Wukong and the real Wukong killed the fake Wukong.
But here are 2 main explanations or real stories the book didnot tell.
First, The real Wukong was killed, and the fake Wukong continued to travel west. I will explain why there are such stories later.
Second,
there is only one Wukong in the whole story, but Wukong himself has contradictions. It is his own submissive side that killed his own rebellious side.
Now, I will explain why have such explanations and what WUKONG means for Chinese people.
Wukong was born from a stone between heaven and earth, without father and mother. His dream is to lead his monkeys to live happily in Huaguo mountain and hope to live forever, so he went to hell and tore up the book of life and death which means They can live forever. But this was not allowed by Gods, so he fought with one hundred thousand heavenly soldiers (this is the battle scene at the end of this video), and he was arrested. At last, he began his journey to the west. It is hard to tell the whole story here.
But the birth of Wukong represents a lawless person who resists the gods and pursues absolute freedom. He does not harm others, but he is still controlled and restricted by the gods.
He wants to break all the rules and restrictions on him. So, here is why Budda and gods wanna kill the true WUKONG, because they represent the rules and restrictions.
Some people say that this book is a story of a child growing up and becoming a man. This is a good ending.
Some people say that this is a tragedy, it is a story of us being assimilated and domesticated by society and rules. We were both Wukong when we were young, but as we grew up we discovered that we were restricted by various rules even if we did not authorize them to restrict us. In the end we had to become a part of this society, just like Wukong finally became a Buddha, that is the job given to him in this system.
Why does the old man in the video cry? I guess he is the old Wukong, and the true hero finally became an obedient "Buddha", but he still miss the other him----the true hero of his monkeys. It's like we have become a member of society, but the real we are actually the "wild monkey", we still yearn for absolute freedom, unfettered, just like a running wild monkey.
2, all the abilities and skills in the game are real abilities WUKONG have. His weapon is hidden in his ears because The golden hoop can be bigger and smaller.
3，The surname of WUKONG is SUN, the same with the author of: The Art Of War.
4, The cloud is actually his fly machine which given by his master.
Finally, my english is not very good, so I have no ability to tell the essence and spirit of this story. There is too much true meaning hidden in the story about us and about society.
If you want to understand this story, I suggest you read this book, and then read other people's interpretations or the dark side Journey to the West. You will understand the true meaning of the whole story.
We have all become part of society, but I hope that "Wukong" in our hearts will exist forever. As long as it exists, we will never be defeated by society.
As far as I know from the Journey to the West:
Wukong has 72 miracles that help him transform into various forms, including flying into the sky realms, diving into the water or going to hell.
His staff was Yu the Great's giant ruler using for measuring the depths of the ocean, it can be turned larger or smaller as the user wants. Wukong used to order it to turn smaller as a sewing needle and put it in his ear.
The cloud he was riding to fight with dragon was one of his 72 miracles, called Nimbus. Nimbus was the name of the miracle, not the name of the cloud like DragonBall.
Four titans are the four great kings who rule over the first heaven realm of the 33 heavens realms.
The dynasty army that ambushed wukong on the clouds was the army of the Jade Emperor. Jade emperor was the ruler of the universe, not the creator.
The thing that Sun Wukong rides is called "somersault cloud" in the orthodox Chinese context. This is not one of Sun Wukong's 72 transformations. The magical power of "riding clouds and mist" is a skill that almost every god and demon can possess.......
