I would simply note that it is not surprising that stacking different porous media with "discrete gradation" does not extend the operating map in the space (flow rate, equivalence ratio). Upstream conjugate heat transfer is very likely to be very low between two porous plates, whilst necessary to extend the operating limits thanks to the heat recirculation. So obviously, a continuously-printed medium will work better.
