    Thank you Ern! I did fail my first PPL checkride too. I was devastated but I recovered and became a better pilot for the many years I flew later (until I was medically grounded due to diabetes.) Never give up, folks!

    I skated through all of my check rides until my CFI. I studied my ass off, too. I just got too caught up in the moment and was having stuff thrown at me. Put the wrong pedal in for a slip and bam. Game over boys. The only part I'd complain about was the DPE didn't let me know I had failed until the end of a daunting 8 hour checkride. I wasn't upset. I failed and deserved to fail and I was a better pilot because of it. Honestly, I wish it had happened sooner to wake my ass up. I grew up around planes and my PPL was a formality for the most part. I'd argue that guys that had to prod, push, and pull teeth are just as good if not better pilots than "naturals". They've had to work for it.

  • @JoeSmith-nu8oo
    @JoeSmith-nu8oo 2 года назад

    I wanted to be a pilot from a very early age,I lived near an airport, and when I could buy a toy or get a present it was a plane. I started flying at age 16 out of a crop-duster strip in a rural area in a 140, showed up one day the plane and the pilot were gone! I joined the Air Force in hopes that would help me get my flying career started, that wasn't the best way to get started either! I continued flying even though the odds were not in my favor at this point, but I don't give up easily.The thing that really matters most I found out is, you really need people that support what you want to do, especially becoming a pilot, it's not cheap and it's not all that easy! I did finally call it quits about 20 years ago when the reality set in that I just didn't have the time to make it happen plus I'd be taking a pay cut from my current job, it was hard but I had no option and getting older didn't help, sometimes I'm kind of glad it didn't happen when I look at pilot life, and I've had conversations with career pilots that are very disgruntled, I know there are also pilots that are very happy with their career choices.I could have done it for maybe 20 years and then I probably would have needed a change LOL. I still look up to the sky when a commercial aircraft is coming in and wonder what it would've been like and I get a feeling of sadness and relief at the same time almost, I'd still rather regret something I did than didn't do in a way(Commercial Pilot)that is. I tried getting my kids into aviation but they have no interest in flying! It's great to see you and other pilots loving what you do, love that Cirrus flying as well.Take care Airman!

    • @FlyingwithBigErn
      @FlyingwithBigErn  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing your story👍🏽. Did you get your PPL? If not that would be a great way to scratch that flying bug. Being a commercial airline pilot is definitely not for everyone. It comes with some pretty big sacrifices (being away from family is mine), but I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I still love putting on my uniform and serving my customers. Especially during the holiday season. I’m privileged to see the joy of reuniting family’s as I leave the airport and that’s pretty cool to me. Cheers my friend👍🏽

    Hey Ern I have a question, what happens if a pilot sleeps in on accident or their alarm doesn't wake them up? Let's say you had a 5am flight and planned on waking up at 3am but you ended up waking up at 6am, an hour after the flight was supposed to leave. What would happen to the flight and the pilot?

      That's why hotels have phones in their rooms.

      @@TB-um1xz So would the other flight crew request the workers at the front desk to call your room?

    • @TB-um1xz
      @TB-um1xz 2 года назад +1

      @dfg I mean yes. Flight crews look out for each other. Easier for the front desk to call. Than getting a call from the company.

      @FlyingwithBigErn  2 года назад +1

      Great question! Normally the other pilot would provide backup. At the van time if you aren’t downstairs they would call your room. If no answer a room visit will happen. Finally a call through scheduling if none of the first two are successful. Rarely gets that far but we always back up the other pilot. Cheers!

      Hey I’m 17... and honestly I would just go to a local mom and pop flight school, get your licenses there and then become a flight instructor and build your hours. Once u have at least 500 hours I would go fly for a small airline like Cape Air, just to get the airline experience, then fly for a regional, then eventually a mainline airline. I would just take a college class online or something if you want to go
