+1 for the Varia, wouldn’t ride without it. The reactive light pattern is another great feature that increases your visibility to the driver overtaking you.
I have used varia for about 15 months and won't ride without it on the local c roads in england. If I could get the Ant + to trigger a rearwards camera I would have one of these as well. The local roads are quiet and with increasing numbers of electric or hybrid cars the noise of an engine is not always the first warning. Varia give my Wahoo three different audible beeps and the led shows red for a speeding car as well as the screen showing how many cars are stacked behind me. The varia signal can transmit to several riders in the bunch with garmin or wahoo head units. Enjoy the ride.
Peter that is brilliant! I would love to see a Garmin Varia Radar that has a camera that starts recording when it detects a car. Hope you are able to get some good riding right now in the UK. I know it can be nasty over there this time of year.
I like using the Varia because it can see through a group of people behind me unlike a mirror. If I am on the front and I get an alert, I know to wait before pulling off until the car passes. Likewise it will also let me know if there are multiple cars in a row. I also hacked the wahoo (thanks to GPLama) to change the vehicle icon to a ☠ for an added reminder of danger! 😁
That icon is epic!!! I love it. Yes I use it in group rides as well and when mounted low, it will detect those cars. I really think everyone who rides should have one for their own sake and for the safety of those in a group.
Garmin Varia for me , A lot better than I realised, I got caught out on a windy day riding and couldn’t hear the car behind me overtaking, the car was fine gave me room but it was the shock of it suddenly appearing, it was then I invested in the Varia , absolute fantastic it is just gives you a nice heads up what’s coming so you can be aware and prepare yourself for the pass, it even picked up another beast of a cyclist who went past me at top speed 😄I thought it was a bleep for a car but this guy was good 😄
Just found your channel and really digging your info. I’ve had a Varia about 3 months now and wish I’d purchased it years ago! So well worth the investment in my opinion. Man, so glad you’re ok from being hit! So many distracted drivers now days. Hopefully they aren’t watching your videos while they are driving. 😁

One thing not mentioned in the video is the light pattern of the Varia. When a car comes up behind you the Varia starts blinking faster and is more visible to the driver. Cycling out in country roads I have noticed cars tend to slow down and give me more space where as that did not happen as often with other rear lights. Not sure if drivers think they are being recorded or I am manually letting them know I see them but for whatever reason vehicles seem to be a little more respectful than they have been without the Varia. Also when in group rides the riders behind me will see the light pattern change and be alerted from the pattern change that a car is approaching from behind.
Great points Sean! I really should have covered some more details of the Varia and would have helped its argument in this video. I agree that the increase in blinking does help deter cars from you. I have experienced the same as far as cars giving more space with the Varia. The group rides is where the Varia really shines because if you have it low enough on your bike, it will detect cars through the legs of the riders behind you. It helps everyone know a car is coming and also keeps riders on the front from pulling off into traffic. I will always call out to the group that a car is back with the Varia and I don't even have to look back.
I've noticed cars giving more space also. Can you imagine how many more will give that space once drivers learn that cyclists now have cameras on board? 😊
I have both the latest Varia and Fly6 and personally like you I prefer the Varia plus a mirror especially on country roads. My Varia has never runout of battery on any rides and some of them have gone over 6hrs. I love that the Varia warns me when a car is coming especially going down a hill as sometimes seeing cars in mirror I have to change position.
That's very true with the mirror in different positions. When I first started riding with a group again after my accident, I was terrified because I could not see the cars behind us but the varia allowed me to "see" them and know to look back. Yeah I have the old varia which has like 4.5 hours. The newer ones can go 8+ hours.
Great video; commuted 25 - 30 miles to and from work. Departing 4 AM deep rural area and during time change returning home in the dark 6 PM; my choose for more than 30 plus years has been the mirror. Purchased the first Cycliq Fly6 then upgraded to the newer vision when it hit the market and the Cycliq Fly12. For me these devices has been the best combination for me. The mirror has saved me several accidents from the rear. You can not put a price on safety! "Piney woods East Texas"

Get all three! Radar, helmet mirror and i got a gopro front and rear. The radar is a real life saver. As you get older its harder to turn your neck so the mirror helps with that. Gopro for reporting close passes and tailgating etc
Great wisdom and insight here. The mirror makes it so much easier to check things behind you. For those who are more race oriented, you can actually see what people are doing behind you as well. Thanks for the input.
I have all three (but an older Fly6 2nd generation, which died as soon as it saw a drop of water, for each 5 units I’ve had replaced!) and have come to the same conclusion as yours. I love the Varia Radar as it’s always on the lookout for you, but also like to have the mirror in some circumstances to see if the car coming is a threat. The Cycliq Fly6 is just the icing on the cake in case an event happens. One thing your forgot to mention is that the Varia Radar broadcasts its information freely so that anyone can connect to yours and see the coming cars from your radar on their Garmin/Wahoo/etc. Bike computer. This can be useful in a group ride.
On my recumbent trike I’ve never had an issue with Cycliqs on the front and rear and side mirrors. I was taught to keep perdiodically glancing at my mirrors to scan for any potential threat and react accordingly but I have thought about getting a Garmin Varia for my trailer just for that extra bit of safety however I don’t feel like it’s necessary yet. I do feel like the Fly 6 has saved me more than I probably realise because of the circling light feature letting everyone know that they are being filmed and people act differently on camera especially on the road. They give you more distance more notice and are far more weary because no one wants their stupidity all over the Internet. Several years back I was involved in a hit and run on my upright trike and I was running one of the 1st gen fly 6s and I was riding along some back roads when this company Ute comes drifting around the corner at 80km/h (on a 40km/h road) and T-bones me. Luckily I escaped only with rainbow bruising up my legs but my trike managed to spin around and capture the number plate, the company name plastered all over the car and captured the face of the driver. I was able to take the driver to court and was subsequently paid by his insurance to cover all damages plus medical and the Driver went to prison. Maybe the Varia could have told me the car was there sooner, I don’t know, But I do know that without the Cycliq I wouldn’t have been able to capture the information needed to take the culprit to court.
I have all three actually. I love the very I would never ride without it. The mirror I only use is a backup. I have the fly 6 for around here because there have been four hit and runs on bicyclists and the past month, Three of which had to be med-flighted out to the hospital. All of which the police are still looking for the vehicles. Cars have - cams all over the place now in rear window cams all for the same reason. It was a really good video though nicely done.

Varia and a little mirror (cateye bm45) in the drop-bar - The varia tells me when to use the mirror... btw. remember the bike radar trafic app - it gives cool data on number of cars and their speed in garmin connect.
I use a mirror (Zefal Spy), Fly6 (2nd gen), and Cat-Ears (those dorky wind-covers for your ears) to hear cars coming earlier. I do like the Fly6. Of course it's not going to prevent accidents but I do feel it reduces harassment. Yobbos may think twice when they see the blinking lights going around the camera lens.
Varia is always on 2yr old now and lasts 8hrs with light on low setting, feels like riding in unpadded shorts without it 😂. Can be used with light off which many don't realise, so have ridden 5hrs with light plus 8hr radar only. Still had not got to low battery warning.
Also forgot to say when I reduce light use to extend battery it is great that you can turn off and on from your garmin head unit which I do depending on road conditions.
Rich, you are exactly right, I have the very first rectangle version and it will last 4 hours and maybe 5 on a good day, The newer RTL 510 and RTL 515 has awesome battery life. I Should have disclosed that in the video. I feel ya about riding without shorts!
Nice review but I have one correction.I have the Varia with the varia display unit. In the city with multiple cars the Varia only beeps on the first vehicle while the display shows all the vehicles (even other bikes) behind you. The display beeps again after that series of vehicles have cleared.
Your video is helpful, thank you, as safety while riding is a big concern for me. I dont use my road bike anymore due to too many angry drivers. Here in my rural area during weekends, the cyclists go out in large pelletons (30 to 100 riders) and refuse to move over for traffic and basically take up the entire lane in front of you. This infuriates the locals (and the police, some of whom have been assaulted recently by cyclists refusing to pull over - tempers run hot). The net result is that we have aggressive cyclists and aggressive drivers. I miss riding and I decided with my wife to purchase a set of hybrid bikes so that we could ride on quieter roads, gravel and dirt paths and we are fortunate for the many bike paths available in the area. Still, the thought of jumping on my bike to go and do groceries along a busy main road remains a point of concern. My wife favours a mirror and my preference would be very bright daytime running lights, like the Ion 200 kits or maybe even the Cycliq kits, but the latter option is really expensive (but I like the idea of having video). I am hopeful that, by going to hybrids, we can actually move over onto gravel when cars or trucks come up behind us since all the roads here have big shoulders. I wasn’t aware of the Garmin Varia and will look into this. I am also looking into a Go Pro to make it obvious we have video going, but that also seems expensive since both of us would likely get one. Have you tested the various daytime light kit offered by other brands? BTW, that picture of you after being hit is pretty awful and I am thankful that you are back on your bike with a strong awareness of safety. It lends credibility to what you share and encourages me to look at all options, so , thanks again!
Thank you so much for your reply and input here. I understand that the relationship between cyclist and drivers are not great. Honestly, both sides need work on this and need to communicate better. Hopefully the more cyclists there are on the roads, this will improve. I think video may help an incident if the car actually sees the camera but most of the time if the car rarely sees a cyclist, they wont see a small camera on you. I could see it keeping them from doing something aggressive towards you when they are passing slowly but the camera would have to be mounted like on top of a helmet for them to see it and know they are being recorded. My favorite daytime rear facing light is actually a forward facing light set to strobe mode. I have had drivers say they can see me a mile away and they give me more room when passing. Its like that light is yelling at their eyes to give me room :).
@@BlackWaterCyclist . I've got GoPro 7s. Rear is mounted just below saddle. Front is on a swivel mount on the stem. I live in Sussex in the UK and the drivers in built up areas are so impatient - The 'close calls' seem to be more frequent and closer lately. Pretty happy with the GoPros, they seem to do the job and provide me that extra level of reassurance though.
People who say you don’t need a Varia have never used one. I have a 510, and would never ride without it. It is the best bit of kit on my bike. That being said just pre-ordered the new Gen3 Fly 6 as the cars keep getting closer.

I have been debating the camera as I am trying to figure out at what point does it become a win? In other words, unless you actually have a collision, is there anything that gets recorded that is worth the time and effort to pursue? Having cycled on roads extensively for over 45 years, I am fortunate to have had only 2 collisions with automobiles. One was a rear end which I was able to stay up and only suffered a taco rear wheel and the other was a pull out in front of me which I only resulted in minor hand injury. I have been harassed more times than I want to remember and every time it is infuriating. However, annoying it is, is it worth pursuing? Blessed to be able to ride and generally feel great about the experience.
@@mitchellsewell275 Just imagine though, if the harassment was captured on video and reported and law enforcement actually followed up at least with a warning how far that could go to make everyone riding their bikes safer from that person. I doubt they would waste their time harassing other cyclists thinking the next time they could face a fine or arrest.
Boy, I’m so sorry to hear about that accident that almost took your life. I recently purchased the. Varia but it hasn’t been delivered yet. I thought maybe I should have gotten the one with a camera (715?) but just cannot afford it plus it got bad reviews for the camera stability. One of the things I hate about mirrors is that you have to take your eyes off the road. I have had several bad experiences when that happened before. I thought I was ready and had scanned the road and situation ahead but still had emergency stops or basically been ran off the road. Thanks for posting. Gonna check out some more of your work.

The Fly6 battery life is only "Up to 4 hours" if you ride with the light on. So figure if go on a long ride for ~ 3-1/2 hours you will have a dead light and a dead camera.
That was a horrible accident you had. Glad you are still cycling. I have the Cycliq and for 3 yrs. The first one had a water issue. I have a new one. I also use a Third Eye mirror. That has saved me a few times. I also run a Go pro 9 on the front. I posted almost getting hit by a driver running a red light when I had the green arrow. That was in Utah which is NOTORIOUS for red light runners. I will consider your Varia review

Thanks Jay! I think a camera is great to ride with for evidence but I do not see it actually keeping cars away. Honestly the best deterrent I have found is a front facing headlight turned backwards on flash mode. I have had people later ask me what I was using because they could see me like a mile away. Also the cars were all giving me more space with that light.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Why not just a flashing red light? Also, is there not a legality issue with a white flashing light on the rear of a bicycle or any other vehicle which is expected to have red on the rear?
@@mitchellsewell275 The forward headlight has more lumens and is much brighter since it is supposed to be used on the front of the bike at night. Many Red rear facing lights have less Lumens and in daylight riding, it doesn't catch the drivers attention as well. Now some rear facing lights have gotten much brighter these days but I still feel they do not compete with my headlight on strobe. As far as the legality of it, you could always put a small clear red piece of tape over it to make it red. Also, at what point does self preservation overcome the law of the road? I am willing to risk paying the fine to prevent losing my life or limb. Great question and I actually mentioned the red light tape trick if the law is against the white light on one of my other videos. I appreciate it.
@@BlackWaterCyclist I like your idea. I use the Niterider lights front and rear as designed and they are daylight visible but, I could see that the front flasher with a red lens might be better. Also as your moniker suggests, you are likely in a less congested area normally. I concur with safety especially after what was a tremendously unfortunate collision you suffered. My friend was run over by a young driver who took a car without the mandated ignition interlock. Fortunately, due to his outstanding physical condition he was able to recover. However, he is back to riding only off road which is a shame but, understandable.
I'm not sure if anyone commented but the Varia (the one with the light) has a battery life of up to 16 hours, not 6 or 7. In the one without the light the life is 7 hours. Having a flashing daytime light, front and back, while wearing bright clothing, combined with some form of radar/Varia AND a head mounted mirror is the best way to go to date. Adding a camera that has the ability to identify a license plate, etc. also helps, afterward.

I have a Varia. I also have Trieye glasses with a mirror (I highly recommend them, they are a Norwegian company). The mirroe/Varia are complimentary. The Varia beeps and then I look back with my mirror. The Varia gives a lot of warning.
I think the Fly6 is no match for the other two. I have a Fly6 and i'm happy with it. Of course it does not alert you of any incoming car, but it has a blinking light that makes you more visible to on-coming transit, and records your rides. I do watch the rear camera when i get home and it helps me to understand how to prevent crashes by looking over the footage. It also enables you to supply footage to local authorities so that aggressive drivers start being charged for their misconduct. (That will also help other road users, not only you)

@@mitchellsewell275 You can start with changing your own behaviour after watching the footage. Things like: doing hand signals with enough time, positioning at the center or on the left, understanding if you are really embaracing traffic behind you (which means you are not comunicating your intentions properly or soon enough). After that, i report some violations (the most severe ones) to local authorities and also comunicate dangerous spots to city hall to help them fix it in a way that can be safer for everyone.
@@CyclingLifePT I am in NJ/USA. Where are you riding? Have authorities been receptive to your suggestions? Have you had any actions taken either against you or drivers based upon your video evidence? One of the concerns I have is unless there is a collision, law enforcement is likely to look the other way. My greatest annoyance is the verbal and vehicular abuse/harassment which occurs from a small percentage of drivers who clearly are abusive, harassing, bullying individuals who feel even more unrestrained when in a auto or truck and there is a user who they feel is not worthy of using the road especially when they are driving. You obviously are encountering threatening behavior with drivers choosing to cut it close to you. How about the directed verbal and squeezing which is more of a directed attack at you?

I ride in Portugal and the feedback from the police is very encouraging. Although the processing of such images and violations is very slow, i've noticed some nice improvements on my daily route such as fixing vertical signals, placing mobile radars on places where excessive speed is a concern, fixing potholes on the side of the road (where we prefer to ride most of the time)
What you don't realize is that for deaf cyclists a mirror takes constant attention while the varia is a much smarter solution but then combined with a mirror. Non audio disabled can make use of their hearing and then use the mirror deaf people don't have that luxioury. If it exists i actually would prefer a radar combined with a fibration device. This way you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible.
That is brilliant. Now I have an idea. The new varia can connect to the Garmin edge and to a phone via Bluetooth at the same time. I use Aftershox bone conducting headphones that connect to my phone and they vibrate more than regular headphones. I wonder if that would supply enough vibration to alert a deaf cyclist of a car approaching.

I have started using a mirror since I've been back on the bike for about one year now. Yes it was a hit & run and I also got hit from the front. But moving forward I would like to have the varia to know when cars are behind me.
I have been debating getting the newer Radar with the bluetooth to connect to my Aeropex headset because of this. Did you have the previously model Radar or just the new one? Interested to hear someone else experience between the differences of the two.

AND I CANT IMAGINE NOT HAVING THE BLUETOOTH...cuz that’s what allows me to be connected to my Garmin 530 & my IPhone! And being connected to my IPhone is where I’m connected to the Varia App and has it streaming through my wireless headphones!! TOTAL GAME CHANGER WITH THE BLUETOOTH!!!!!
I have an earlier Varia purchased about 5-6 years ago. I’ve always considered my $200 investment money well spent. I wish the audio alert in my 1030+ was louder. For in-city driving, where cars are always present, the Varia adds little value other than flashing at closing traffic.
I agree, in the city it is more annoying than anything because cars are always passing you. That's where a mirror is good for a quick check and a camera to capture any issues.
As a retired Bike Patrol Officer, I'd say why stop at one? Why not use all three to keep yourselfsafe? It seems to me that there are various camps out there who only stress using one or the other, but don't realize that not all are intended to replace each one. Would you replace your high beams and go with low beams if needed, or would you go without fog lamps, or use just a regular car headlamp? It seems to me that for all of you yahoos out there who only stress that one is better than the other are missing a point. Why not use all three to lessen the result from being hit from behind by an oncoming car?
Very well said Cameron and that is really what I was trying to portray in this video. At least have a mirror, then get the varia, and then the Cycliq. Get all three if possible. I also ride with a crazy bright orange helmet, I mean ANNOYING Orange. It burns my eyes sometimes looking at it! lol
This is what I am thinking about too. Have had a varia and mirror for some time. Can’t ride without the varia now. But have seriously been thinking about the cycliq 6 and 12 in addition.
Sorry you were hit. I hope you're fully recovered, and that the driver stopped or if not was caught. I've tried to run both the Varia and Fly6 at the same time, it's hard to do because both want to be attached to the seat post. But the Varia wins when I'm riding on the road. Also have a mirror on the handlebar end. The Varia, to me, is most crucial going down two specific hills were I usually hit 35 to 40mph, but cars still want to pass. It's a narrow road, and at that speed I don't dare take me eyes off the road, but the Varia is brilliant about letting me know when a car is behind me. Someday hopefully someone will figure out how to put radar, a blinkie, and a video recorder all in one unit. Bonus if that video recorder can stream live video to my iPhone mounted on my handlebar like a GoPro can.
Thanks! I still get pain in my upper back from the incident but I am still able to ride so that is great. The driver did stop and stayed the whole time so that was nice. Yes a combo of both with live stream would be amazing! I have thought about using an old phone to connect a GoPro to so I had a camera behind me that I could just look down and see if the cars are giving me room or not without have to turn my head which causes the bike to weave into traffic.
If you feel $500 is too much to spend to be safer on the road ask yourself if your life is worth it or not. I had the Varia 510 and it became so much a part of my comfort level on the bike that when I dropped it on the tile floor and it quit working I instantly ordered a new 515 and had it over-nighted. Now I see Garmin has the 517 which has the camera integrated for $400. I am getting one as soon as Garmin fixes the stablization complaints. The mirror wasn't an option because I can't see something that small without glasses and you tend to steer where you are looking without noticing sometimes. I'd rather keep my eyes on the road ahead. There is no real defense against getting hit by some dim witted self centered Karen on the cell phone but I will be as careful and cautious as I can be and follow the rules of cycling and hope for the best. But yeah, my life is worth the cost and in the event I lose it anyway at least the idiot that hit me will probably be caught. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. If I knew how I would make videos myself because safety for cyclists can not be talked about enough.
@@lionden4 Wow! If I were riding around a lot of traffic, I would definitely have a camera like you do. I do ride in the country side more than in the city so for me the camera isn't as important but I will start looking for something soon.
I am getting the Varia and also plan on signaling with my arm as a car approaches. We now have a 3 foot passing rule in Michigan but some ( many ) drivers ignore it. I find when I signal by pointing 3-4 feet into the lane at the road surface, most cars give me more room. With a Varia I will be able to determine where a car is roughly and signal before they are too close. Frequently I combine this with a quick rear view shoulder check. I ride mostly in hilly rural areas. My concern with a mirror is being distracted to the rear view and not concentrating on the road surface in front of me. Or, over reacting when I see a big logging truck ( terrifying) coming up from behind. What are your thoughts and experience on my ideas ?
Great idea putting your arm out to catch driver's attention. I have started using the TriEye sunglasses that have a built in mirror. Now that I have a great option for the mirror, I will not ride without it anymore. It is actually more dangerous to look over your shoulder than it is to glance in the mirror bc the pulling of your head to one side causes you to veer your bike into the road where the glasses allow you to stay straight while checking behind and quickly glance forward for debris and obstacles. As far as seeing larger vehicles, I love it bc I can tell when they are actually giving me room. I have actually bailed into the ditch a few times bc a logging truck or cement truck was not giving me the adequate space. I hope that helps.
The only folks that like the Varia are the ones that own one. We wouldn't be on the road without it. Adds 100 yards to your ears and mirrors, which you ,of course still need. Hammerhead Karoo has the best connection to it. Even spots bikes behind you.
At the time of this video recording you seem not to appreciate the almighty accident prevention powers of the rear safety camera! 😑 In fact the bike mirror and rear radar do not prevent accidents. They simply alert you that an accident is about to happen. And most of the time there isn't much a cyclist can do to avoid that accident. The bike safety cameras are the only devices that prevent accidents from happening. Allow me to shed some light on this subject: First of all, when drivers see the camera video-recording them they tend to suddenly have a desire to be at their best behaviour. After all nobody wants to get fined or lose their driving licence. Secondly if the driver just doesn't care and puts you or other road users lives at risk, the video footage can be used to get that drivers license suspended, and get that driver off the roads. ☝ This will "PREVENT" that particular driver causing accidents against you or other road users in the future. And if all cyclists carried cameras and used video footage to remove dangerous drivers from our roads, that would "PREVENT" wast majority of accidents!
You ride too close to the side. Move to the center and make cars go into the other lane. That will also give you more bail out room. If cars are going too fast for that strategy, find another route.
The biggest con for any of these radar devices is also the most important con. They tell you that a vehicle is approaching, but is it going to hit you or pass safely? What? For $200-$400 they don't tell you that? Meanwhile, a $10 mirror tells you that. The only reason people don't use a mirror is because at some point, the elitist snobs who road bike decided that mirrors weren't cool, or that you might lose .00001 watts because of the drag of the mirror. Ridiculous. If you ride alone, get a mirror and use it. Even if you ride with other people, get a mirror and use it. Oh, and also, wear your sunglasses under your helmet strap so when you get to a stop and you take your helmet off, your sunglasses don't go flying off your head. Wear whatever team kit you want, wear socks or don't, and basically just do whatever makes you the most happy to be on your bike. Do practice proper group riding etiquette, do wait for anyone who gets dropped and help them back, and don't half wheel. Oh, and don't wear underwear under your kit.
The idea of the Fly6 is good, but the hardware and software is junk though. Getting mine (Gen 2) replaced under warranty but I got a Varia while waiting and just intend on selling the Fly6 when it arrives. Prevention is better than cure.
Great insight here! I have heard this over and over about the Fly6. I really love the idea of it but execution needs to be better. I am probably going to get a GoPro session to mount at the rear of my bike and possibly another for the front.
I actually did a video on it about PTSD. I was super fortunate to not have major injuries. I still get pain in my back where I hit the ground but no broken bones or torn ligaments.
I have found running the Varia light lower to be better when riding with others. It will actually detect cars through the legs of fellow cyclist drafting behind you. When I have had it higher around the saddle bag, it won't detect cars if I am pulling.

Thing i find a problem with all models of bike cameras is the cost.. i'd say only 25-35% of cyclists purchase them which is a shame because of the warranted benefits, i was recently also nearly rear ended but then having the car hoon past me aggressively resulting in an exchange of words from the driver who does not care about using his car as a weapon. it would've made good footage, A for Social media & B for the Police.
Hi Allen, you are exactly right! That is really what kept me from getting the Radar years ago because I was just not ready to spend the money on a light that might not help me. After experience, it is the way to go. There have been several situations I wish I had a camera. If only Garmin could add a Camera to the Radar that turns on every time it senses a car coming up behind you.
I have them both. They are both excellent. Garmin warns you of Talibans in cars. Cycliq 6 is boh a camera and a torch, but you can turn the torch off. Cicliq 6 documents how you are hit or murdered by talibans in cars. Sadly enough, the police in Denmark dont give a damned, unless you get hit and scratch the car…Two cases from my own experience from 2021….

I have used varia for about 15 months and won't ride without it on the local c roads in england. If I could get the Ant + to trigger a rearwards camera I would have one of these as well. The local roads are quiet and with increasing numbers of electric or hybrid cars the noise of an engine is not always the first warning. Varia give my Wahoo three different audible beeps and the led shows red for a speeding car as well as the screen showing how many cars are stacked behind me. The varia signal can transmit to several riders in the bunch with garmin or wahoo head units. Enjoy the ride.

I like using the Varia because it can see through a group of people behind me unlike a mirror. If I am on the front and I get an alert, I know to wait before pulling off until the car passes. Likewise it will also let me know if there are multiple cars in a row. I also hacked the wahoo (thanks to GPLama) to change the vehicle icon to a ☠ for an added reminder of danger! 😁
That icon is epic!!! I love it. Yes I use it in group rides as well and when mounted low, it will detect those cars. I really think everyone who rides should have one for their own sake and for the safety of those in a group.
Garmin Varia for me , A lot better than I realised, I got caught out on a windy day riding and couldn’t hear the car behind me overtaking, the car was fine gave me room but it was the shock of it suddenly appearing, it was then I invested in the Varia , absolute fantastic it is just gives you a nice heads up what’s coming so you can be aware and prepare yourself for the pass, it even picked up another beast of a cyclist who went past me at top speed 😄I thought it was a bleep for a car but this guy was good 😄
Just found your channel and really digging your info. I’ve had a Varia about 3 months now and wish I’d purchased it years ago! So well worth the investment in my opinion. Man, so glad you’re ok from being hit! So many distracted drivers now days. Hopefully they aren’t watching your videos while they are driving. 😁

One thing not mentioned in the video is the light pattern of the Varia. When a car comes up behind you the Varia starts blinking faster and is more visible to the driver. Cycling out in country roads I have noticed cars tend to slow down and give me more space where as that did not happen as often with other rear lights. Not sure if drivers think they are being recorded or I am manually letting them know I see them but for whatever reason vehicles seem to be a little more respectful than they have been without the Varia.
Also when in group rides the riders behind me will see the light pattern change and be alerted from the pattern change that a car is approaching from behind.
Great points Sean! I really should have covered some more details of the Varia and would have helped its argument in this video. I agree that the increase in blinking does help deter cars from you. I have experienced the same as far as cars giving more space with the Varia.
The group rides is where the Varia really shines because if you have it low enough on your bike, it will detect cars through the legs of the riders behind you. It helps everyone know a car is coming and also keeps riders on the front from pulling off into traffic. I will always call out to the group that a car is back with the Varia and I don't even have to look back.
I've noticed cars giving more space also. Can you imagine how many more will give that space once drivers learn that cyclists now have cameras on board? 😊
I have both the latest Varia and Fly6 and personally like you I prefer the Varia plus a mirror especially on country roads. My Varia has never runout of battery on any rides and some of them have gone over 6hrs. I love that the Varia warns me when a car is coming especially going down a hill as sometimes seeing cars in mirror I have to change position.
That's very true with the mirror in different positions. When I first started riding with a group again after my accident, I was terrified because I could not see the cars behind us but the varia allowed me to "see" them and know to look back. Yeah I have the old varia which has like 4.5 hours. The newer ones can go 8+ hours.

Great video; commuted 25 - 30 miles to and from work. Departing 4 AM deep rural area and during time change returning home in the dark 6 PM; my choose for more than 30 plus years has been the mirror. Purchased the first Cycliq Fly6 then upgraded to the newer vision when it hit the market and the Cycliq Fly12. For me these devices has been the best combination for me. The mirror has saved me several accidents from the rear. You can not put a price on safety! "Piney woods East Texas"

Get all three! Radar, helmet mirror and i got a gopro front and rear. The radar is a real life saver. As you get older its harder to turn your neck so the mirror helps with that. Gopro for reporting close passes and tailgating etc

I have all three (but an older Fly6 2nd generation, which died as soon as it saw a drop of water, for each 5 units I’ve had replaced!) and have come to the same conclusion as yours. I love the Varia Radar as it’s always on the lookout for you, but also like to have the mirror in some circumstances to see if the car coming is a threat. The Cycliq Fly6 is just the icing on the cake in case an event happens.
One thing your forgot to mention is that the Varia Radar broadcasts its information freely so that anyone can connect to yours and see the coming cars from your radar on their Garmin/Wahoo/etc. Bike computer. This can be useful in a group ride.

On my recumbent trike I’ve never had an issue with Cycliqs on the front and rear and side mirrors. I was taught to keep perdiodically glancing at my mirrors to scan for any potential threat and react accordingly but I have thought about getting a Garmin Varia for my trailer just for that extra bit of safety however I don’t feel like it’s necessary yet. I do feel like the Fly 6 has saved me more than I probably realise because of the circling light feature letting everyone know that they are being filmed and people act differently on camera especially on the road. They give you more distance more notice and are far more weary because no one wants their stupidity all over the Internet. Several years back I was involved in a hit and run on my upright trike and I was running one of the 1st gen fly 6s and I was riding along some back roads when this company Ute comes drifting around the corner at 80km/h (on a 40km/h road) and T-bones me. Luckily I escaped only with rainbow bruising up my legs but my trike managed to spin around and capture the number plate, the company name plastered all over the car and captured the face of the driver. I was able to take the driver to court and was subsequently paid by his insurance to cover all damages plus medical and the Driver went to prison.
Maybe the Varia could have told me the car was there sooner, I don’t know, But I do know that without the Cycliq I wouldn’t have been able to capture the information needed to take the culprit to court.
I have all three actually. I love the very I would never ride without it. The mirror I only use is a backup. I have the fly 6 for around here because there have been four hit and runs on bicyclists and the past month, Three of which had to be med-flighted out to the hospital. All of which the police are still looking for the vehicles. Cars have - cams all over the place now in rear window cams all for the same reason. It was a really good video though nicely done.

Varia and a little mirror (cateye bm45) in the drop-bar - The varia tells me when to use the mirror... btw. remember the bike radar trafic app - it gives cool data on number of cars and their speed in garmin connect.

I use a mirror (Zefal Spy), Fly6 (2nd gen), and Cat-Ears (those dorky wind-covers for your ears) to hear cars coming earlier.
I do like the Fly6. Of course it's not going to prevent accidents but I do feel it reduces harassment. Yobbos may think twice when they see the blinking lights going around the camera lens.
I need to get done it those Cat Ears. I've heard great things about them.
Varia is always on 2yr old now and lasts 8hrs with light on low setting, feels like riding in unpadded shorts without it 😂. Can be used with light off which many don't realise, so have ridden 5hrs with light plus 8hr radar only. Still had not got to low battery warning.
Also forgot to say when I reduce light use to extend battery it is great that you can turn off and on from your garmin head unit which I do depending on road conditions.
Rich, you are exactly right, I have the very first rectangle version and it will last 4 hours and maybe 5 on a good day, The newer RTL 510 and RTL 515 has awesome battery life. I Should have disclosed that in the video. I feel ya about riding without shorts!
Nice review but I have one correction.I have the Varia with the varia display unit. In the city with multiple cars the Varia only beeps on the first vehicle while the display shows all the vehicles (even other bikes) behind you. The display beeps again after that series of vehicles have cleared.

Your video is helpful, thank you, as safety while riding is a big concern for me. I dont use my road bike anymore due to too many angry drivers. Here in my rural area during weekends, the cyclists go out in large pelletons (30 to 100 riders) and refuse to move over for traffic and basically take up the entire lane in front of you. This infuriates the locals (and the police, some of whom have been assaulted recently by cyclists refusing to pull over - tempers run hot). The net result is that we have aggressive cyclists and aggressive drivers. I miss riding and I decided with my wife to purchase a set of hybrid bikes so that we could ride on quieter roads, gravel and dirt paths and we are fortunate for the many bike paths available in the area. Still, the thought of jumping on my bike to go and do groceries along a busy main road remains a point of concern. My wife favours a mirror and my preference would be very bright daytime running lights, like the Ion 200 kits or maybe even the Cycliq kits, but the latter option is really expensive (but I like the idea of having video). I am hopeful that, by going to hybrids, we can actually move over onto gravel when cars or trucks come up behind us since all the roads here have big shoulders. I wasn’t aware of the Garmin Varia and will look into this. I am also looking into a Go Pro to make it obvious we have video going, but that also seems expensive since both of us would likely get one. Have you tested the various daytime light kit offered by other brands? BTW, that picture of you after being hit is pretty awful and I am thankful that you are back on your bike with a strong awareness of safety. It lends credibility to what you share and encourages me to look at all options, so , thanks again!
Thank you so much for your reply and input here. I understand that the relationship between cyclist and drivers are not great. Honestly, both sides need work on this and need to communicate better. Hopefully the more cyclists there are on the roads, this will improve. I think video may help an incident if the car actually sees the camera but most of the time if the car rarely sees a cyclist, they wont see a small camera on you. I could see it keeping them from doing something aggressive towards you when they are passing slowly but the camera would have to be mounted like on top of a helmet for them to see it and know they are being recorded. My favorite daytime rear facing light is actually a forward facing light set to strobe mode. I have had drivers say they can see me a mile away and they give me more room when passing. Its like that light is yelling at their eyes to give me room :).
I have GoPros front and rear. I have been using a borrowed Garmin Varia recently and will be getting by own one imminently.

@@BlackWaterCyclist . I've got GoPro 7s. Rear is mounted just below saddle. Front is on a swivel mount on the stem. I live in Sussex in the UK and the drivers in built up areas are so impatient - The 'close calls' seem to be more frequent and closer lately. Pretty happy with the GoPros, they seem to do the job and provide me that extra level of reassurance though.
People who say you don’t need a Varia have never used one. I have a 510, and would never ride without it. It is the best bit of kit on my bike. That being said just pre-ordered the new Gen3 Fly 6 as the cars keep getting closer.

I have been debating the camera as I am trying to figure out at what point does it become a win? In other words, unless you actually have a collision, is there anything that gets recorded that is worth the time and effort to pursue? Having cycled on roads extensively for over 45 years, I am fortunate to have had only 2 collisions with automobiles. One was a rear end which I was able to stay up and only suffered a taco rear wheel and the other was a pull out in front of me which I only resulted in minor hand injury. I have been harassed more times than I want to remember and every time it is infuriating. However, annoying it is, is it worth pursuing? Blessed to be able to ride and generally feel great about the experience.
@@mitchellsewell275 Just imagine though, if the harassment was captured on video and reported and law enforcement actually followed up at least with a warning how far that could go to make everyone riding their bikes safer from that person. I doubt they would waste their time harassing other cyclists thinking the next time they could face a fine or arrest.
Boy, I’m so sorry to hear about that accident that almost took your life. I recently purchased the. Varia but it hasn’t been delivered yet. I thought maybe I should have gotten the one with a camera (715?) but just cannot afford it plus it got bad reviews for the camera stability.
One of the things I hate about mirrors is that you have to take your eyes off the road. I have had several bad experiences when that happened before. I thought I was ready and had scanned the road and situation ahead but still had emergency stops or basically been ran off the road.

The Fly6 battery life is only "Up to 4 hours" if you ride with the light on. So figure if go on a long ride for ~ 3-1/2 hours you will have a dead light and a dead camera.
That was a horrible accident you had. Glad you are still cycling. I have the Cycliq and for 3 yrs. The first one had a water issue. I have a new one. I also use a Third Eye mirror. That has saved me a few times. I also run a Go pro 9 on the front. I posted almost getting hit by a driver running a red light when I had the green arrow. That was in Utah which is NOTORIOUS for red light runners. I will consider your Varia review

Thanks Jay! I think a camera is great to ride with for evidence but I do not see it actually keeping cars away. Honestly the best deterrent I have found is a front facing headlight turned backwards on flash mode. I have had people later ask me what I was using because they could see me like a mile away. Also the cars were all giving me more space with that light.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Why not just a flashing red light? Also, is there not a legality issue with a white flashing light on the rear of a bicycle or any other vehicle which is expected to have red on the rear?
@@mitchellsewell275 The forward headlight has more lumens and is much brighter since it is supposed to be used on the front of the bike at night. Many Red rear facing lights have less Lumens and in daylight riding, it doesn't catch the drivers attention as well. Now some rear facing lights have gotten much brighter these days but I still feel they do not compete with my headlight on strobe.
As far as the legality of it, you could always put a small clear red piece of tape over it to make it red. Also, at what point does self preservation overcome the law of the road? I am willing to risk paying the fine to prevent losing my life or limb.

@@BlackWaterCyclist I like your idea. I use the Niterider lights front and rear as designed and they are daylight visible but, I could see that the front flasher with a red lens might be better. Also as your moniker suggests, you are likely in a less congested area normally. I concur with safety especially after what was a tremendously unfortunate collision you suffered. My friend was run over by a young driver who took a car without the mandated ignition interlock. Fortunately, due to his outstanding physical condition he was able to recover. However, he is back to riding only off road which is a shame but, understandable.
I'm not sure if anyone commented but the Varia (the one with the light) has a battery life of up to 16 hours, not 6 or 7. In the one without the light the life is 7 hours.
Having a flashing daytime light, front and back, while wearing bright clothing, combined with some form of radar/Varia AND a head mounted mirror is the best way to go to date. Adding a camera that has the ability to identify a license plate, etc. also helps, afterward.

I have a Varia. I also have Trieye glasses with a mirror (I highly recommend them, they are a Norwegian company). The mirroe/Varia are complimentary. The Varia beeps and then I look back with my mirror. The Varia gives a lot of warning.
I think the Fly6 is no match for the other two. I have a Fly6 and i'm happy with it. Of course it does not alert you of any incoming car, but it has a blinking light that makes you more visible to on-coming transit, and records your rides. I do watch the rear camera when i get home and it helps me to understand how to prevent crashes by looking over the footage. It also enables you to supply footage to local authorities so that aggressive drivers start being charged for their misconduct. (That will also help other road users, not only you)

@@mitchellsewell275 You can start with changing your own behaviour after watching the footage. Things like: doing hand signals with enough time, positioning at the center or on the left, understanding if you are really embaracing traffic behind you (which means you are not comunicating your intentions properly or soon enough). After that, i report some violations (the most severe ones) to local authorities and also comunicate dangerous spots to city hall to help them fix it in a way that can be safer for everyone.
@@CyclingLifePT I am in NJ/USA. Where are you riding? Have authorities been receptive to your suggestions? Have you had any actions taken either against you or drivers based upon your video evidence? One of the concerns I have is unless there is a collision, law enforcement is likely to look the other way. My greatest annoyance is the verbal and vehicular abuse/harassment which occurs from a small percentage of drivers who clearly are abusive, harassing, bullying individuals who feel even more unrestrained when in a auto or truck and there is a user who they feel is not worthy of using the road especially when they are driving. You obviously are encountering threatening behavior with drivers choosing to cut it close to you. How about the directed verbal and squeezing which is more of a directed attack at you?

I ride in Portugal and the feedback from the police is very encouraging. Although the processing of such images and violations is very slow, i've noticed some nice improvements on my daily route such as fixing vertical signals, placing mobile radars on places where excessive speed is a concern, fixing potholes on the side of the road (where we prefer to ride most of the time)
How about a combination of the two: I use a mirror plus the Fly 6 CE. I have avoided being hit 6x. Just about as bad as driving a car in my state.
What you don't realize is that for deaf cyclists a mirror takes constant attention while the varia is a much smarter solution but then combined with a mirror. Non audio disabled can make use of their hearing and then use the mirror deaf people don't have that luxioury. If it exists i actually would prefer a radar combined with a fibration device. This way you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible.
That is brilliant. Now I have an idea. The new varia can connect to the Garmin edge and to a phone via Bluetooth at the same time. I use Aftershox bone conducting headphones that connect to my phone and they vibrate more than regular headphones. I wonder if that would supply enough vibration to alert a deaf cyclist of a car approaching.

I have started using a mirror since I've been back on the bike for about one year now. Yes it was a hit & run and I also got hit from the front. But moving forward I would like to have the varia to know when cars are behind me.

I have an earlier Varia purchased about 5-6 years ago. I’ve always considered my $200 investment money well spent. I wish the audio alert in my 1030+ was louder. For in-city driving, where cars are always present, the Varia adds little value other than flashing at closing traffic.
I agree, in the city it is more annoying than anything because cars are always passing you. That's where a mirror is good for a quick check and a camera to capture any issues.
As a retired Bike Patrol Officer, I'd say why stop at one? Why not use all three to keep yourselfsafe? It seems to me that there are various camps out there who only stress using one or the other, but don't realize that not all are intended to replace each one. Would you replace your high beams and go with low beams if needed, or would you go without fog lamps, or use just a regular car headlamp? It seems to me that for all of you yahoos out there who only stress that one is better than the other are missing a point. Why not use all three to lessen the result from being hit from behind by an oncoming car?
Very well said Cameron and that is really what I was trying to portray in this video. At least have a mirror, then get the varia, and then the Cycliq. Get all three if possible. I also ride with a crazy bright orange helmet, I mean ANNOYING Orange. It burns my eyes sometimes looking at it! lol

Sorry you were hit. I hope you're fully recovered, and that the driver stopped or if not was caught. I've tried to run both the Varia and Fly6 at the same time, it's hard to do because both want to be attached to the seat post. But the Varia wins when I'm riding on the road. Also have a mirror on the handlebar end. The Varia, to me, is most crucial going down two specific hills were I usually hit 35 to 40mph, but cars still want to pass. It's a narrow road, and at that speed I don't dare take me eyes off the road, but the Varia is brilliant about letting me know when a car is behind me. Someday hopefully someone will figure out how to put radar, a blinkie, and a video recorder all in one unit. Bonus if that video recorder can stream live video to my iPhone mounted on my handlebar like a GoPro can.

Yes a combo of both with live stream would be amazing! I have thought about using an old phone to connect a GoPro to so I had a camera behind me that I could just look down and see if the cars are giving me room or not without have to turn my head which causes the bike to weave into traffic.
If you feel $500 is too much to spend to be safer on the road ask yourself if your life is worth it or not. I had the Varia 510 and it became so much a part of my comfort level on the bike that when I dropped it on the tile floor and it quit working I instantly ordered a new 515 and had it over-nighted. Now I see Garmin has the 517 which has the camera integrated for $400. I am getting one as soon as Garmin fixes the stablization complaints. The mirror wasn't an option because I can't see something that small without glasses and you tend to steer where you are looking without noticing sometimes. I'd rather keep my eyes on the road ahead. There is no real defense against getting hit by some dim witted self centered Karen on the cell phone but I will be as careful and cautious as I can be and follow the rules of cycling and hope for the best. But yeah, my life is worth the cost and in the event I lose it anyway at least the idiot that hit me will probably be caught. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. If I knew how I would make videos myself because safety for cyclists can not be talked about enough.

@@lionden4 Wow! If I were riding around a lot of traffic, I would definitely have a camera like you do. I do ride in the country side more than in the city so for me the camera isn't as important but I will start looking for something soon.

I am getting the Varia and also plan on signaling with my arm as a car approaches. We now have a 3 foot passing rule in Michigan but some ( many ) drivers ignore it. I find when I signal by pointing 3-4 feet into the lane at the road surface, most cars give me more room. With a Varia I will be able to determine where a car is roughly and signal before they are too close. Frequently I combine this with a quick rear view shoulder check. I ride mostly in hilly rural areas.
My concern with a mirror is being distracted to the rear view and not concentrating on the road surface in front of me. Or, over reacting when I see a big logging truck ( terrifying) coming up from behind.
What are your thoughts and experience on my ideas ?
Great idea putting your arm out to catch driver's attention. I have started using the TriEye sunglasses that have a built in mirror. Now that I have a great option for the mirror, I will not ride without it anymore. It is actually more dangerous to look over your shoulder than it is to glance in the mirror bc the pulling of your head to one side causes you to veer your bike into the road where the glasses allow you to stay straight while checking behind and quickly glance forward for debris and obstacles. As far as seeing larger vehicles, I love it bc I can tell when they are actually giving me room. I have actually bailed into the ditch a few times bc a logging truck or cement truck was not giving me the adequate space. I hope that helps.
Correct! Varia+mirror. Varia alone is not good enough.
They complement each other. Varia gives distance and helps when you can't hear "ém.

I just purchased a mirror and varia 515. I'm not really interested in the camera quite yet.
The only folks that like the Varia are the ones that own one.

At the time of this video recording you seem not to appreciate the almighty accident prevention powers of the rear safety camera! 😑
In fact the bike mirror and rear radar do not prevent accidents. They simply alert you that an accident is about to happen.
And most of the time there isn't much a cyclist can do to avoid that accident.
The bike safety cameras are the only devices that prevent accidents from happening.
Allow me to shed some light on this subject:
First of all, when drivers see the camera video-recording them they tend to suddenly have a desire to be at their best behaviour. After all nobody wants to get fined or lose their driving licence.
Secondly if the driver just doesn't care and puts you or other road users lives at risk, the video footage can be used to get that drivers license suspended, and get that driver off the roads.
☝ This will "PREVENT" that particular driver causing
accidents against you or other road users in the future.
And if all cyclists carried cameras and used video footage to remove dangerous drivers from our roads, that would "PREVENT" wast majority of accidents!

You ride too close to the side. Move to the center and make cars go into the other lane. That will also give you more bail out room.
If cars are going too fast for that strategy, find another route.
Don't say 'accident'. Accident implies no-fault and you know that cars colliding into you aren't no-fault.
The biggest con for any of these radar devices is also the most important con. They tell you that a vehicle is approaching, but is it going to hit you or pass safely? What? For $200-$400 they don't tell you that? Meanwhile, a $10 mirror tells you that. The only reason people don't use a mirror is because at some point, the elitist snobs who road bike decided that mirrors weren't cool, or that you might lose .00001 watts because of the drag of the mirror. Ridiculous. If you ride alone, get a mirror and use it. Even if you ride with other people, get a mirror and use it. Oh, and also, wear your sunglasses under your helmet strap so when you get to a stop and you take your helmet off, your sunglasses don't go flying off your head. Wear whatever team kit you want, wear socks or don't, and basically just do whatever makes you the most happy to be on your bike. Do practice proper group riding etiquette, do wait for anyone who gets dropped and help them back, and don't half wheel. Oh, and don't wear underwear under your kit.
The idea of the Fly6 is good, but the hardware and software is junk though. Getting mine (Gen 2) replaced under warranty but I got a Varia while waiting and just intend on selling the Fly6 when it arrives. Prevention is better than cure.
Great insight here! I have heard this over and over about the Fly6. I really love the idea of it but execution needs to be better. I am probably going to get a GoPro session to mount at the rear of my bike and possibly another for the front.

I actually did a video on it about PTSD. I was super fortunate to not have major injuries. I still get pain in my back where I hit the ground but no broken bones or torn ligaments.

Combining a Varia and a underseat bag can be a problem.
I have found running the Varia light lower to be better when riding with others. It will actually detect cars through the legs of fellow cyclist drafting behind you. When I have had it higher around the saddle bag, it won't detect cars if I am pulling.
My underseat bag has a loop sewn on the back for a taillight, so this 3D printed clip works great (if pricey):

Thing i find a problem with all models of bike cameras is the cost.. i'd say only 25-35% of cyclists purchase them which is a shame because of the warranted benefits, i was recently also nearly rear ended but then having the car hoon past me aggressively resulting in an exchange of words from the driver who does not care about using his car as a weapon. it would've made good footage, A for Social media & B for the Police.
Hi Allen, you are exactly right! That is really what kept me from getting the Radar years ago because I was just not ready to spend the money on a light that might not help me. After experience, it is the way to go. There have been several situations I wish I had a camera. If only Garmin could add a Camera to the Radar that turns on every time it senses a car coming up behind you.

I have them both. They are both excellent. Garmin warns you of Talibans in cars. Cycliq 6 is boh a camera and a torch, but you can turn the torch off. Cicliq 6 documents how you are hit or murdered by talibans in cars. Sadly enough, the police in Denmark dont give a damned, unless you get hit and scratch the car…Two cases from my own experience from 2021….

Battery life is very poor and it is not easy to use. Very disappointed.
After I start using Varia, it looks like more drivers think it's a camera. and give me more space, of course not all drivers.

@@BlackWaterCyclist I have always used bright lights at the back, so I concluded that maybe they thought it was a camera. but was not aware that the light became stronger as the car approached. so it could very well be the reason, or a combination. :)
