I Nearly Destroyed My VW Polo's 1.2 Tsi Engine, While Replacing The Timing Chain! Pt3

  • We are one step closer to fitting the new timing chain, I've nearly messed up a few times now, but I've noticed in time. Can I still save this badly neglected engine and get this VW Polo R Line back on the road.
    I've never replaced a timing chain before so this is a massive challenge, especially on a neglected 1.2 tsi engine. As I delve deeper into the engine I'm finding more problems. Can I actually pull it off and replace the timing chain or is the engine knackered.
    Hopefully, I can pull it off and actually fix the engine faults, The EPC and Engine light are on, but The engine has a misfire, Is the timing chain stretched or is it knackered.

    Great video. A tip for pressing on the drive sprocket, heat it up in a toaster oven or something similar first. It will expand slightly and be MUCH easier to press on. You can also use a bolt in the threaded hole of the crankshaft and press on the sprocket using a nut and a washer or socket. This way you don't have to hit on the crankshaft in a longitudinal direction. Anyway, looks like the sprocket came on without a hitch!

    Congratulations M8 glad to see you are in good spirits.The salvage game will send you through a roller coaster of emotions.Sometimes it is as simple as a rounded off bolt to ruin your whole day.But when you get past the barriers and make it to the finish there is no better feeling to know you did that.In the words of Dee from salvage nation KEEP IT MOVING!!!!

    Great video mate, your plodding along with the job nicely.
    Plus it's always best to double and triple check your timing, it's something that I always do myself.
    Looking forward to seeing the next installation video. 👍

    Loving your videos mate. I'm not a professional mechanic, but I spent 50 years as an aircraft maintenance engineer & have rebuilt/restored many cars & motorbikes in that time. I have just done this job on a mates vw caddy & it was really simple. I think where you went wrong re the timing, was tightening the cam sprocket bolt before you fitted the tensioner. Anyhow, all you had to do was slacken the cam sprocket bolt, rotate the crank web to the stop & retighten the cam sprocket bolt. Anyway, no matter & you got there in the end. Keep up the good work for us all to enjoy.👍

    Tip use green brilliant pad, emery paper should not be used. Bits of emery particles can infuse into metal - that's why you never see transmission builders using it.

  • @recs5351
    @recs5351 4 месяца назад +2

    The coloured links align to the marking on the cam sprocket and there should be one for the crank sprocket, they are there to show you that you have the correct teeth on the none tensioned side of the chain, I would think when releasing the tensioner you should have the cam sprocket loose so it can turn, turn the crankshaft to make sure it is pressed against the locking pin and then release the tensioner. As the cam sprocket can turn all the slack from the none tensioned side will transfer to the tensioner side at this point you can turn the crank to make sure it's still against the pin and tighten the cam sprocket. Pull the pins do the 2 turns on the crank but stop just before TDC or only turn it 1 and 3/4 turns, insert the crank pin and continue turning until you feel it lock refit cam locking tool if it fits great if not release the cam sprocket and turn the camshaft until it fits retighten and redo the 2 turns. normally you'd have the rocker cover off and would be able to turn the camshaft with a spanner :)

    Great video again but I buy and sell myself and live in Wales I'd suggest trying to put a more positive spin on your cars a lot of people wanting to buy will see a bit of silicone sealer in the pick up etc and panick and will be put off buying.
    I know your trying to show everything warts and all but buyers can be very wary of things that aren't really any major issue tbh.
    Your a really honest guy and I'd like to see you doing really well but as I said maybe showing it as a big positive changing the chain etc could be a massive positive for a buyer instead a maybe a bit of a negative.
    Hope this helps and doesn't come across as a negative I'm honestly just trying to help you fella

      @@RevivingSalvage didn't mean to shout it was just one of those moments where you watch and cringe lol. Put up a foldable table or something with a clean cover on and keep things off the floor you want to keep anything that goes inside an engine as clean as possible.
