- In this video about Amateur (Ham) Radio I am using my Yaesu FT60 with a Diamond RH66CA antenna plus a homemade tigertail counterpoise.
I am standing next to the trig point at Merryton Lowe near Leek, Staffs. A quick chat with Dai, G6MDX turned into a field test of checking the directionality of my radio.
Very interesting outcome.

Not surprised Mike, the antenna is in reasonably free or but lower half of dipole ie, pigtail, body is blocking signal in one direction and absorbing/cancelling it in other so sideways is most clean air. If you use a remote mic and hold radio above your head or at arms length it will be different again. Great to see real life not just charts.
Very good and informative video. Im convinced now and i didnt know it was directional once the tiger tail was attached
I did a test and I can confirm it is directional with a counterpoise. I used my Wouxun KG-UV8G with a counterpoise attached to the belt-clip. I was holding the radio in front of my face facing me. When I faced the opposite direction to the stations my signal strength increased. Basically I had to make sure I was facing the opposite direction to the stations.
Very interesting. I will test that too. Thanks for the video!
Another great video Mike. Wish I was up there in the hills with you. I understand the club was at highordish this weekend too but couldn't make that either. Enjoyed the video anyway. Robert h.
Hello Mike, It’s Terry, lovely to meet you on Saturday up at Meriton Low. Interesting video on the directional handheld. Hope you had a good Weekend on your travels. 73’s.
Hey Terry. Great to meet you also. I know know your name is not Tim. Lol.
Great video. Interesting findings
Motters M7TRS 👍🏽
It's definitely not directional. It's your body blocking the signal. Used also for foxhunting when at a good distance from target. The tiger tail does improve signal though. 73s. KE5JPS
You should have been there when I held the ht above my head. Sadly that footage was corrupted.
I use handheld moxon for foxhunt but yes you can hold the radio close the the body attenuate the signal in one direction
Interesting video. As a matter of interest, is this 2m or 70cm and how long is the tigertail?
Hi. This was on 2m and the counterpoise is a quarter wave so 50cm or 19". Take a look at this video I did a few years ago. ruclips.net/video/o1bKRFqd6p4/видео.html
@@MikeM0XMX Great, thanks. I'll take a look. I've been looking at ways to improve my simple UV5R
@@MikeM0XMX Actually, this is a link to today's video!!
@@Mike-H_UK Sorry. lol. ruclips.net/video/kvxUd9sl9oI/видео.html
@@MikeM0XMX Brilliant. many thanks!!
Won't it be your body and head affecting directionality?
Maybe but you have to be so close by design
