What Does A High B12 Level Mean?

  • Why you might have high b12 levels, what does high b12 level mean, and is a high b12 level dangerous. There are three main scenarios that I'm going to discuss. I will briefly mention them here: number one is improper testing, number two is has to do with cell membranes and transportation and number three has to do with liver disease.
    MY NEW B12 BOOK: geni.us/rTQTvd (Amazon)
    Cell membranes Support geni.us/RhaqAz (affiliate link)
    Cell membranes Support geni.us/64DQ5 (Affiliate link)
    Omega 3 geni.us/eBDLI (Affiliate link)
    If you want to find out a little bit more details on what each of these mean and why it could be contributing to your high b12 levels keep following. what does a high b12 level mean is it dangerous what's going on here we're gonna get into the details of all that but first off it's not really dangerous to have high b12 level in and of itself but you should be looking a little further into why it could be happening and in this video I'll discuss the three things that most likely are causing it and these are the most common that I see in my practice okay the scenario number one is testing when you’re doing a b12 test typically it's a serum b12 test and the ranges go from about three hundred or two to fifty two thousand or and if you are taking b12on a regular basis in any form and it’s absorbing into your body it's gonna raise that serum level when you're doing your draw if you took b12 when you’re close to the test you usually want to give a couple days washout period up to five days probably maximum would be well not maximum but that would usually be good timeframe you could wait longer it’s kind of see what's going on if you have like a really high b12level you may want to not take any for like three weeks and see what happens if you've been off of b12 for a really long time and you're still getting a spike then that's gonna you need to look at scenario number two and three a little bit more on testing the other is of course injections are gonna raise yours here and level a lot more than just an oral tablet also depends the dose of your tablet the dose of the injection etc. but for getting an injection you want to have off probably a little bit longer but washout period probably seven days at least and then how often you're getting that injection etc. will dictate you know what the likely rise or high end of that b12 would be I'm seeing them as high as six thousand I've seen them you know as low as like a hundred or less but in terms of testing you do want to have a washout period when you're testing your serum levels this is really the only test on a standard lab that there is available is this serumb12 level there's no intracellular b12level test through standard labs and then other vitamins too can interfere with the b12 assay specifically by it in you want to make sure you're not taking any biotin in close proximity to the Tuda test that's scenario one in proper testing can lead to IV 12 levels and in the case that it's that's the reason and there's really nothing else to worry about you can even the high level itself isn't really problematic it might not be helping as much as you think but it could be some people just need to run at higher b12 level to get it into the body into all the tissues that's a scenario number one. Reason number two for why your b12 is higher what does it mean is relating to cell membranes and transportation of b12 when your b12 level is really high it could be that you don't hear enough your body's not making proper transport mechanisms for your b12 and this is just a carrier protein all things in our bodies almost everything needs to be transported on carrier proteins and b12 is one of those in our genetic alterations that basically won't allow you to make sufficient amounts of these carrier proteins which will lead to basically it's not getting distributed throughout your body the way that it should and the same thing goes to once it arrives at the cell it has to get transported inside and that has to do more with cell membranes andor if your cell membranes are fragile or you're not repairing them properly that can also lead to higher b12 levels and serum because it's basically just floating in the serum and then it's not getting excreted out of the box or getting into the cells and then it will eventually get excreted out of the body but it's not actually kind of trading into the tissues the way that it should and there's also genetic alterations in both the carrier protein it's called TCN trans cobalamin and also the cell membranes which is of phosphatidyl ethanolamine methyl transferase enzyme can be altered which leads to instability and cell membranes or poor production of cell membranes both of those scenarios can lead to higher v12volts.

    Love your video! It is so informative and also unlike the articles I just read, does not jump to the conclusion that you have some horrible disease as the most likely cause. :D I do supplement-1000mcg. Maybe I shouldn't. I am reading about all the high b12 foods and I eat sardines 1X week, can of tuna plain 1X week, salmon 1 week, 2 eggs daily, cheese and greek yogurt daily, grass-fed beef 3X week. Whew. Didn't know I was actually getting so much in my diet. I do eat TONS of healthy veggies too! I did get several B12 shots about 3 months ago, but that should have worn off. I will try skipping the supplement and retest in a few weeks. THANK YOU for taking the time and explaining this.

      Hi Diane, I did not see a direct question but maybe you are wondering if you need to take b12 or b vitamins in general? While most people will benefit from periodic supplementation, not everyone needs to take a b vitamin supplement every day.

    This is a good video. I'm not finding a diagnosis online by any shot, but am openly looking for thoughts on my B12 levels. I've not yet been given the full results yet, but have had terrible head pains and went to the doctor. Had blood tests taken and I was told that my B12 levels were borderline. I'm a man in his mind twenties, healthy, walks regularly (sometimes 12k steps a day), pushes weights (usually 40 kg) and enjoy cooking healthily. My whole family are like me in terms of cooking and I've grown up eating lots of vegetables and have continued that in adulthood. I had been taking multivitamins whenever I had a full day ahead of me but stopped before going home for Xmas this year. I had thought that the B12 levels could be linked to the head pains, but I now don't think so after taking vertigo medication and now believe that the levels are due to multivitamins. Bit of a wake up call because if it is vitamin supplements there is clearly some danger in taking them daily in phases (intermittently basically). I really welcome some thoughts on this because I'm not a heavy drinker by any means and would usually only have one beer every couple of weeks or so.

      Neither high or low b12 cause head pain. Sometimes taking b12 can give people headaches but the high levels of b12 in the blood does not cause this

    I had a Sadi Bypass last year and have all of a sudden had a high level result of 1200 for b12. This is apparently uncommon as low b12 is the common factor after bariatric surgery. I’m meeting with my surgeon today to follow up but I’m quietly panicking because I’ve been feeling unwell with a wide range of symptoms that have been brushed off for some time by medical professionals, which in turn has made my anxiety worse and amplifies my symptoms. I need some reassurance lol p.s. my liver results were perfect, cholesterol was slightly elevated but Dr said it wasn’t a fasting test so disregard that result. Thankyou for sharing this!

Looking back at my blood work over the past 6 months, my bilirubin was very slightly elevated and my liver enzymes very slightly but my doctor considered them normal. I don't think your b12 levels have anything to do with your symptoms, since it is in a normal range. I would need a lot more information to be able to help you find out what might be causing those symptoms. The "pain al over body" is a concern and should be evaluated with a face to face visit with a doctor. I can say that the b12 level you report seems normal.

A single test being high is not typically concerning but the details do matter. If your doctor made this recommendation, they had a reason. I can't say why.

    Hello firstly I would like to say thx for ur responses. I got recent labs the other day my b12 is higher 2k my alt is 60. I’m going to ask for a Methylcobalamin test. Do you know of any correlation with b12 n alt

    • @swintegrative
      @swintegrative  3 года назад

      hi Donajor8, yes alt is liver function test. The liver cells store some B12, so the high B12 could be coming from the liver. It's always important to re-check and verify the lab values bc your body is always in a state of change. I think you mean get methylmalonic acid test not methylcobalmin.

      Hi there, thanks for the questions. I think it is normal for vitamin levels to fluctuate. It could be something as simple as consuming something rich in b12 before the first test and not in the second. Most of the time when B12 levels are low it is from low consumption/ intake from food.

Unfortunately, today, I found out after suffering much pain in my stomach, and kidneys and having other symptoms such as fatigue that I suffer from leukemia and kidney and liver problems. I think this should be taken more seriously so that people could understand that there are potential dangers in having high B12 in the blood. I wish I had someone or a doctor tell me that I was running a risk of all this. I am not old and I feel like I have no life in me. Little by little this has destroyed my life and I fear for the lack of knowledge other patients facing the same situation may have. Maybe, you should make a video about the potential outcome of high B12 in the blood. It would save lives.

    Hi, I'm vegan and I'm starting to monitor my B12 level. I went to a private laboratory and the b12 level came out very low. I took 1000 units a day. And every 2 months I went to the same laboratory, and the results were low. After a year of taking 1000 units a day, I realized that those in the laboratory were probably wrong and I did b12 tests at 3 different laboratories (same day) and the assumption came true. The question is whether this excess B12 has affected me and what other tests I should do.

      Hi Urban Hawk. Yes this could be a clue but would depend if the liver numbers are always like this and how high they are. It is best to get as many data points as possible before coming to a conclusion.

      Your liver numbers can stay normal and u can actually have liver cancer ,cirrhosis or sever liver disease,, My b12 is sky high 1st time in my life ,,was always low actually anemic,, Ive had thyroid cancer n my tumor maker also came back sky high after years of normal,,, Liver cancer?

      Hi Mariela, it depends what you mean by absorb. If you have high B12 it is absorbing into your body. However it may bot be getting into your cells very well. This video gives some suggestions. ruclips.net/video/ly9_rDnwcJ8/видео.html Have you seen it?

    I had a hemogram 5 days ago and my b12 count came off as 1440. I’ve been supplementing with multivitamins every day for more than a year now and have a protein oriented diet (around 150 grams daily) since I lift. I don’t feel bad at all, except the tinnitus I had in my right ear for two months now. It began suddenly and I only hear it when it’s silent, my auidogram’s came out fine so no hearing loss and I’m not dizzy even a bit. Might these two be connected? Should I be worried? Apart from b12 my blood work was completely normal including alt/ast and creatinine.
    I would be as grateful as a person could be for anything if you could help me out. I’ve been freaking out like crazy since I got my test results...

    • @swintegrative
      @swintegrative  3 года назад +1

      Hi Bruh, I would not be too worried but you do want to find out why it is high if you can. You should probably just stop the multivitamin for a few weeks and re-check your B12 levels. More than likely it will come down.

    I’ve had unexplained weird parasthesias intermittently all over my body for about 2 years. B12 levels persistently high around 1500, don’t supplement with b12. Saw a hematologist/oncologist for multiple tests over past year, but my other blood work is mostly pretty good. He can’t explain it but feels comfortable saying it’s not a hematological disorder. and the symptoms are bothersome. Not sure what to do at this point

    How long would 600mcg in a shot be detectable in your blood? Would it leave bloodwork elevated for weeks?

      Yes typically shots will leave elevated levels for weeks maybe months if there have been many shots.

    Hi, im in the uk, I have blood test regularly, the last few have shown vitamin d deficiency and lft levels were high, unfortunately this was missed, I was feeling ill, bloods re dine my b12 too high, folate too low and lft again 2 high, gp told me to repeat in 3months, if same I will be reffered to liver, could blood transfusion cause this, I have sps so had polyps removed but hemorrhage be 2yrs this June, thank you

    • @swintegrative
      @swintegrative  Год назад

      Hmmm, not sure what your question is here. Transfusions would not cause these things generally but would look at why u need the transfusion to begin with. Vit d is not directly related to liver function.

    Mine has been in Range 4000-7000 for 6 yrs. No one knows why. Now I'm having bad digestive system issues , gallstones, and fatty liver. What's wrong? It a started after being a vegetarian and had it low, then started to eat meat again and it spiked. Has been high ever since.

    My B12 Level is 1159. Low HB though. I’m not sure why it’s so high. I take iron supplements twice a day with 1000 mcg. Can that be the reason? I’m worried for it to be something dangerous

    • @swintegrative
      @swintegrative  Год назад

      Not likely from taking iron unless it has B12 in it. Sometimes it’s just genetic and not a real problem.

    My lab came back at 1,666 pg/mL. I don't take any supplements or medications, and unfortunately don't eat B12 rich foods often enough.
    My new PCP (I just went two years without insurance) said that my level is "normal" and I don't know how to get her to acknowledge that I don't believe it's normal and it's worrying me. Is there a type of specialist I can see that may take my concerns more seriously? Or am I maybe overreacting? I've had life altering symptoms (miserably failing to get a diagnosis) going on 5 years now and just don't want anything to be overlooked.

      check out my other videos on high B12. you probably just need to re-check it. but a hematologist may look a little closer.

    I don’t take any supplements, I have swelling in one arm and had lymph nodes up in my elbow, feel so tired and weak, I’m being fast tracked to the breast clinic for suspected breast cancer? Does B12 being high have anything to do with breast cancer?

      Hi Nicola, not typically. Any cancer can theoretically do this depending on which white blood cells are involved.
