    I'm actually really surprised a guy like Marcus can explain this so well. More often than not, a great defender like him does a lot of his work on instinct, which is really hard to explain coherently. But Marcus' explanations made perfect sense to me. Excellent content!

      @@elflacoaldair Not at all. All I'm saying is that it's usually pretty difficult explain a skill that you have a knack for that other people don't. For example, if you're born with a great sense of empathy, it's hard to understand why others can't show empathy like you can.

      He def taught himself how to be a better defender. But you can tell slot of what he knows was just instinct. he knows his limits as a defender (the KD comment).

      @@zayndot7288KD is pretty much the limit for any defender in NBA (1 on 1) so it's not like he admits it's his limit (it is everybody's limit) but says that what he shows probably won't work against centers (which is ok because he is a guard)

    I like that he's showing how the fundamentals of defense has changed. But he set himself apart when it comes to defense. I always observed him as being on a CP or a LeBron level of observation. For example, in the Raptors series in the bubble. He's the only one who saw how the final play of Game 3 was going to develop before the inbound happened.

    bout to hit up my local LA fitness and put these tips to the test. that was amazing. its crazy how he views each possession like a "battle" . in a game where there is constant back and forth, he views each one as its own interaction and will adjust accordingly to win it.

      Definitely one of the last 'vets' of that Celtics rebuild regime when Ainge robbed the Brooklyn Nets of those draft picks. But a worthy one because his game as aged very well and has been a steady defensive presence for accountability along with Jaylen Brown. If the rest of the team aren't feeling his vibe playing D especially on the playoffs, the C's defense will crumble.

    I love how he’s teaching the mindset not just a move because defense is all about reading and countering. And your always at a disadvantage so you have to balance the scale. I’m loving that screen trick cause a red wouldn’t even catch that cause it looks like he reaching low but using the rollers momentum to recover space is genius

    True ballers appreciate this content, it's amazing how much knowledge someone can give you. Little details that really makes the difference is amazing. This is what we need , keys to get better at the defense. Stamina, lateral quickness and the mentality that you are not going to score no matter what. They try and counter his defense but his mentality never changed, ain't scoring easy, but flexible enough to know when it ain't working or to change something

    I'm trying to figure out if I liked this video better than watching Curry hit a bunch of 3s in a row in practice. I think I like this better. Very informative. He has a lot of tricks of the trade that I wish I would have incorporated when I played college ball. Much respect to him for providing this for free.

    Thx Ryan, Not many trainers out there posting defense tips n vids. It’s beginning to be winter soon n ion have no gym near me so yo got ideas on how to improve my shooting without a hoop? Of course I’ll still be shooting in games n in practice but we don’t have practice or games every day

      A very strong 6'3". Find videos of Porzingis trying to back down Smart and had to settle for a mid range fade away jumping AWAY from him! That is how even some big men who don't have that grown man strength and game can't take advantage of such a mismatch against players like Smart.

      Tbh Curry is just ridiculously skilled you just have to hope he misses. I’ve seen Marcus smart play great defense on Curry but the shot falls anyway🤣

    This is a masterclass. Marcus is a defensive legend. I would love to see something like this with Jrue. Or Smart and Kyrie in conversation about counters and how they think about the cat and mouse or play by play from past games.
