The problem is, the reason these places fail is because they're run by arrogant idiots - normal people don't need the help because they are intelligent enough to take an objective perspective
How can they be surprised that Jonathan decided to leave? He spoke to to them about not wanting to be stuck in the kitchen and he was still stuck in the kitchen. That's not the job he signed up for! I hope he's doing well wherever he is now.
An incredibly exploitative couple. Some people behave so badly but can’t face their own selfishness and greed… there is NO WAY these two lazy posers could spread themselves as thinly and worked as hard as Jonathan was doing. I am so glad he grew a pair and left. It’s such a common story. I have worked for a couple of managers like Anne. Overbearing and intimidating - if nothing else, Alex’s visit was the wake-up call Jonathan needed. Glad he found his courage. He was a mere employee carrying the entire weight of their business… while the owner’s fussed with decorating choices and pretended to work hard.
I always get the feeling most of these hotel owners haven't actually been to many hotels themselves. It's like trying to write books if you've never read a book. So they only see things from the perspective of a hotel owner, not from the perspective of a guest.
Very true, I feel like you should have visited a few 5 star hotels before opening one so that you can understand exactly what it feels like to stay in a luxury hotel. Obviously you don’t need to try and be a 5 star yourself but it would at least help you understand the sort of service that people really appreciate.
It's surprising how many owners look down on and abuse their staff. I was not surprised that this place closed down. If you want money you have to work.
Can't say I blame Johnathan. He put up with so much for so long. They should've apologized and offered him a substantial raise to retain him. Hopefully he chose to take a more fruitful offer with actual growth potential. I wonder if they lasted without him. 🤔
The dude Jonathan is a good resource. That this either goes unacknowledged and/or creates insecurities is a huge part of the problem. Cletus and Brandine haven't a clue about hospo.
Is this hotel closed now? The owners told Alex they were nearly broke yet they were looking for more staff at the end of the program. Johnathan leaving was the last straw for Anne. That’s why she was so upset. Maybe he should have stayed on if Ann and Paul had done their fair share of the work.
It has been closed permanently for several years. It got dilapidated and sold by auction. It received planning permission to convert to homes in 2018 but it looks like only one bit has been completed. The rest is falling to bits.
Johnathan was integral to their business and they treated him like a run down family member that they could push around. If you hire someone as a manager; that’s the job they expect to have. This just goes to show you, if you value people, they will want to stay and go above and beyond. Which he was doing even after sending in his resignation.
Well, all three were playing for the cameras there. What a shame for that place. That couple are not suited for that historical place. Apparently Paul left Anne and went to New Zealand.
Alex is wondering about the lack of local engagement in the business - anyone with a half working set of ears could point directly to the faulty foghorn installed in the dining room....sheesh
Take away message from the whole serries is it isn't easy to make money with a hotel. Many like the idea of having a hotel or a high st shop or a pub , the result is all 3 sectors ars oversupplied whitnessed by the high failure rate in all
OK- but geez louise- then leave Alex- watching this was so painful & watching Alex be so mean spirited was hard(which fair, alcoholism is clearly a trigger, but whoa now)
It means when it was built. Some of our kings came from Saxony and their era is known as the Saxon Era. Blooming old, pre medieval, up to 1066. Edit, sorry I missed the point. This lady thinks that by banging on about it being that old will get customers 🤣
@@beebeeliciousI see. From Alex's response, I couldn't tell if it was snobbish, as Alex kind of verbally rolled her eyes at that. But maybe the point was, the building had that history, but the owners weren't embracing it in how they were promoting and decorating the hotel? Thanks for explaining.
She's actually saying "Saxham" not Saxon (look at the menu Alex picks up at 16:40). It refers to the parish the Inn is located in. I think Alex may have misunderstood. I'm not really sure why this makes a difference that it's not in Risby itself, which looks like a lovely village. Risby village is much closer than either Great Saxham or Little Saxham, so telling customers you're in Saxham is likely going to confuse them. I'm not totally convinced the owners know the difference between Saxham and Saxon though...
A building that is still surviving from the Saxon era of England. Very old historical building. Which they could have capitalised on much more (in my opinion).
if johnathan had run that hotel it would have been a success they treated him as a dogs body she looked half cut most of the time husband the light was on but there didnt appear to be any one at home good luck to them what ever back street boozer their running but sure those two wont be doing a lot
The heritage is so important that you haven't bothered to change the sign over your front door in 5 years. Right. But they don't have any ideas about what might be wrong.
That roof is horrid, if not cleaned soon it will be damaged if it isn't damaged already, and the interior is horrid to me.. I just started the vid. I think it was good that he left, they were using him big time. !!!!
The carbonara looks absolutely ghastly. I bet he used cream, bacon, commercial (i.e. powdered) parmesan, and cheap machine dried pasta. I would not insult my insides with such rubbish.
The statue is frequently seen in the US around Italian restaurants. Totally out of place at an inn. As for the other chef.... definitely cute, and you have to admire a guy who isn't a professional chef but is skilled in the kitchen. Great partner material, and I suspect he'd be an asset to any business that properly respects him.
30:00 - i hope they dont change that lovely traditional pub area into a modern day white borefest... I had to pause it to write this.. as i think i can see where this is going :(
32:25 - UGH!! Yeah.. Absolutely awful. I'd be livid if that was my pub... And if i was a regular customer, i'd never go back. People go on about the "death of the pub" in the uk.. And it's because they all look totally characterless hospital rooms nowadays...
@@thisperson5294 Well not quite. Unless you prefer deformed looking teeth to teeth that look naturally formed. Or maybe you prefer the type of halitosis more lethal than Zyklon B, as used by the Krauts in WWII, which is a direct consequence of English teeth oral hygiene (or lack thereof).
Thing is she knows what she is talking about and people who take advice have improved their business. I like her no crap approach because if she was all nice this would boring to watch hahaha 😂 plus she had done so many by this point she stopped pussyfooting around peoples feelings 😂😂
No she’s not. She’s a professional and I think, under the circumstances, very polite when the owner argued with her. Why would you, on television, insist “it’s the SAXON white horse” when her own sign outside reads The White Horse - Risby. Absolutely bonkers but then she did seem both aggressive and drunk 🙄
Nah, I think she's just right - remember, these people ask her to come there! They're desperate for help, supposedly, then they behave like she's just turned up out of the blue to undermine them. Almost all the people on this show argue and fight with her, hate her suggestions, dig in their heels, etc. I've noticed on episodes where the people are open to change or are nice and polite, she's very nice to them. (Watch her episode with the lady in the 1950s style hotel in Torquay.) She responds according to their behaviour. I mean, that woman was pretty damn rude about the Saxon thing and then proceeds to call her a "glamorous little bint" (obviously Alex will have seen that).
If Alex came to my failing business I would listen to her every word of advice
Especially if you invited her out of desperation in the first place!
I'd be too busy looking at her amazing bussom
(call back to old episode - sorry).

I always have to remind myself that the producers pick the most arrogant obstinate & stubborn owners on purpose, and boy did they pick well here!
Alex is just brutal. I love it. 😂😂
Bastard child of a thousand maniacs 😂😂
Larger than life means drunk.
Indeed.
Such a rude, insufferable, loud, terrible woman.
Brits never say what they mean
Prhaps a bit of a drinking problem indeed when we must have a glass while being filmed in a seated interview.
🙄🤡
Why would Alex even bother with these lazy, unmotivated pair? They expect the Manager/Cook to do all the work.
It's surprising how many owners look down on and abuse their staff. I was not surprised that this place closed down. If you want money you have to work.
Long closed and now empty and desolate, unsurprising
Can't say I blame Johnathan. He put up with so much for so long. They should've apologized and offered him a substantial raise to retain him. Hopefully he chose to take a more fruitful offer with actual growth potential. I wonder if they lasted without him. 🤔

Of o saw the closed sign id keep driving.... what is their purpose of putting that sign there
"I went to freshen up Downstairs. I want it to be somewhere where people want to come "
I couldn't have sat there with a straight face !!!
Jonathan is the only real solid person of the staff
When Alex says, there is not one thing in this room that is appealing.
Well, you are Alex 😏
Seriously older woman crush .
Closed down in 2017.

What a pity to let such a historic building go to ruin when it could be a fantastic resource.

Didn’t anyone mention if your going to offer food you need to hire a chef
Well, all three were playing for the cameras there.

The family room was actually the manager’s flat (from interview with Ann )
Inebriated as an amphibian 😂
Sadly, it had to be sold, and was then converted into one house and 3 flats. They couldnt stay afloat once Jonathan left. Where are they now?
Awful woman
The husband - Rick Mayal from Man Down.
Riffraff from Rocky Horror Picture Show
The hoity toity boyfriend and boss of Sigorney Weaver in Ghostbusters. 😅
WHY DID YOU CALL HER IF YOU DON"T WANT ADVICE???????????????
Hotel owner alcoholic
This why no focus
Seems to be quite common in restaurants too

@@punkybrewstar83If it was affecting the business, which it clearly was,and Alex was there to help improve the business, then she had to be direct.
I was wondering about that
Alex is an Italian Princess Diana. Best description I ever read.
I have thought that since the start!! ❤
The husband is quite an attractive man, but he would look remarkably better with a short haircut
No. He would look remarkably better without that rude, OTT, crude, arrogant, lazy old🐄 as a “partner”. Ugh.
I am not English. What is the context at the beginning, the woman's insistence that it is a "Saxon" Inn?
I am English and have no idea.

13:18 is she drunk?
She appears quite delusional and wasted 😮
Does the female owner have a perpetual cold? She sounds so congested
Years of cigarettes and alcohol
COPD.
Alcohol
Cigarettes affect breathing long term

15:26 - Alex is looking good!! 🤩
She is confident and tiny with curly hair she’s always in heels which is super feminine and it makes her look gorgeous I think 😊
What / why .. the ‘ closed sign .. WTF
LOL ... not many customers ... perhaps the CLOSED sign has something to do with it!
If you have a closed sign constantly out, no wonder they had no one parking up and going in.

This was being run as a pub with rooms. The owner is the perfect example of the older days northern pub landlady.
It’s a dump in dumpsville
What a dump.
No wonder I agree so much w Alex’s opinions, we’re both Virgos lol

Wrong pasta, gloopy; and they fed it to an Italian woman 😂

RATHER HIRE A REAL HORSE THAN ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE ITS ON ITS WAY TO THE GLUE FACTORY
MANAGER IS WAY TOO GOOD FOR THEM!!
😂😂i would have put all the fake flowers in the garden and made a nice corner or even in a greenhouse
Yeah, off the coast of England at the bottom of the North Sea.
Fake flowers and foliage are not a thing in the UK.
I would hear that lady’s phlegmy laugh and go right back out the door. Something’s not right wif’at one
The white chef is sorta cute.
But realize why Alex doesn't like it.
yeah Jons hot i agree
