Rob Childs Rapier Vid 44 - Longsword vs Rapier II - The Change Up

  • The first mixed weapons video of myself fencing with the rapier against an opponent with a longsword was done in response to requests from some of the subscribers to the RUclips channel but, while interesting, there was still a decided skill disparity pitting a fencer with over 35 years of experience against those with less than 10. So we are doing it again but this time the longsword is in my hands instead. Further, my opponent wielding the rapier and dagger is someone who has nearly as much experience with it as I do and is easily someone I would consider a top tier fencer. What happens next may surprise you.

    Very nice.
    I've always liked mixed weapon sparring, although it is usually with synthetics in my case.
    Since your last video about, it I've tried a couple of steel bouts of rapier (with and without dagger) versus saber. The steel sabre I was willing to sacrifice to the tests is pretty light, and thus quick.
    I found that even being so light I was relatively easily able to set aside thrusts and block cuts with the sabre so long as I didn't use the weak of the blade.
    With the rapier, I was able to keep the sabreist at bay by threatening the legs and making repeated foreshortened thrusts until the sabre wielder was out of position.
    All in all it became a game of footwork on both sides to keep the sabre from getting inside your reach.
    Once the dagger was added it became a bit lopsided against the sabreist, sine the rapier still had options at close range and had much easier options for simultaneous defense and offense.

    Love this demo. Seeing how different weapons fare against each other and the adaptations required always makes an interesting vid

    Good show Rob! I especially liked the minute rapierist versions of winden and absetzen. The thrust was a siren song to you.

    Hi Rob, very interesting exchange. What I have noticed is that, at times, your opponent moved hand and foot together, you moved the hand first and so you got the point, I think his arm was fatigued because the rapier is long and heavy and only one arm holds it, so, while clearly, he has good form, fatigue got him at some point. Your longsword fencing is what I think longsword fencing without armor should look like, prudent, well calculated and point oriented.

      He did mention at the end of our sparring that he wants to increase his endurance. It is one of the many tools any swordsman should have at their disposal.

      @@ElDrHouse2010 I think the rapier fencer arm had a fatigued arm, because the rapier is heavy and held in one hand. I cannot say he lacked cardio.

    I love this. You got past the length by going for arms and legs and going for body when rapierist would over commit a lunge or so. Your deflection do seem stronger as your displacement is with two hands and your cuts a few times would blow pass his parries. For strategies, did you find yourself going more for binds rather than going for voids?

    • @RobertChildsRapier
      @RobertChildsRapier  9 месяцев назад +1

      I have never been a big fan of voids just because the body is so very slow as compared to the blade. Binding, however, is definitely a favorite of mine. It ensures safety through control of the weapon and, if I were fighting an actual duel, this is the way I would attack my opponents to ensure my own skin stays intact.

  • @Sk0lzky
    @Sk0lzky Год назад +2

    Have you noticed improved leverage in the bind? I never got to fence vs a rapierist using longsword but I suspect rapier's forte might end somewhat closer to the hilt in such a scenario.
    PS The reach difference is incredibly noticeable in all one handed swords (well maybe other than messers and such) vs longsword bouts due to geometry.
    However longswords slightly preceeding and at the time of development of rapier also were commonly becoming longer than earlier variants (to the point where carrying them became nigh impossible or at least inconvenient), I'd love to see a bout like this with something like what we see in Marozzo (if you ever find someone with such an oversized feder, not that tournament winners don't tend to be way longer than period average ;) )

    • @RobertChildsRapier
      @RobertChildsRapier  Год назад +2

      I found that my ability to control the rapier extended much further up the length of my longsword whereas the rapier had to catch the longsword attack precisely on the forte or I would simply blow right through it.

      @@RobertChildsRapier would there be a blade kind which you think might preform better against the longsword (i.e. stiffer blade?) im going to assume there is no 'perfect' sword to carry, and its more like rock-paper-scissors where any given encounter would have to factor in skill and weapon characteristics. cheers!

    • @RobertChildsRapier
      @RobertChildsRapier  Год назад +3

      @@beepboop204 While it is not for the purpose of fencing against longswords, I prefer a stiffer blade with a bit more mass on my rapier just in general. I am very much a control guy when I fence and such a weapon lends itself to my strength and binding maneuvers I like to employ. As for which is better to take against a longsword, skill is going to play a huge factor for both fencers who wield...whatever weapons they bring. All swords bring inherent strengths and weaknesses, and skill will influence the outcome the most, but a more rigid blade is something I would want when fencing against someone with a longsword.

    I notice that you are entering by cutting more angles which makes sense you never want to be in the center line especially if he opponent has more reach than you on any martial art.
    This is how this match up goes, also yes the blade's mass allows you to control or not be blade controlled as easily.
