    These two Red-Tailed Hawk nestlings were rescued from the Springbank Airport . Their nest was located on the communications tower and was destroyed because it was interfering with signal transmission. In this video, the nestlings are about 2 weeks old. They are tweezer-fed chopped up whole mice, about 1 mouse per nestling. They are fed four to five times per day. The smaller hawk regurgitates a pellet half-way through the video. Hawks slowly digest the softer parts of their meal (meat), and then regurgitate the harder, indigestible materials (bones, fur) in the form of a pellet, just like owls. However, it is important to feed whole food including bones, since the bones provide a necessary source of calcium to the growing nestlings. These babies will stay at the rehab center until late summer. Thanks for watching! Visit www.aiwc.ca.

    Usually birds of prey throw up those pellets because they eat stuff they can’t digest like bone, fur, and other material. They have nice large crops and look like they’re being taken very good care of 😊

    They are so fluffy and cute. They do grow up to be majestic birds of prey though.

      That’s not what happened. That’s called “casting” it’s how birds remove all the indigestible material from their gizzards and crops. That’s why the bird that cast wasn’t eating at first, they don’t want to pile food on top of a casting they are trying to get up. These are just babies so they are only figuring out how things work with their bodies, the little one quickly passed it’s casting so it could feed.

      It’s called ‘casting a pellet’ not just casting. The pellet is composed of food products eaten that the bird cannot digest such as bones, fur, feathers and anything else that cannot be digested.
      Birds of prey when older will try and swallow small animals or birds whole therefore collecting the parts not digested into a ‘pellet’ that is vomited or ‘cast’.

      It's a wild life conservation center. They are released back into the wild once they mature. They are not pet birdies, lol...

    I have seen where these birds will continue to eat until their esophagus becomes obstructed. Over feeding will kill them.!

    • @cassimir4u
      @cassimir4u 4 года назад

      These birds of prey called ‘raptors’ will not eat more than they can hold in their ‘crops’ that is the area about halfway down their throats. As they eat you will notice that area grow into a ball like swelling that keeps growing until the bird cannot eat anymore and will not die as a result of eating too much. Birds such as these do not have stomach’s but a ‘gizzard’ that processes food. The food is retained in the crop as storage until it’s needed to be digested. They can therefore only digest a small amount at a time as they need to stay alive especially if food is scarce. When being fed consistently such as at a wildlife station and especially as babies they will digest all the food in their crops between feedings as they need the nutrients for growth.

    What do you feed them?

    • @vtwinbuilder3129
      @vtwinbuilder3129 4 года назад +2

      That looks like cut up pieces of feeder mice you buy at pet stores. They need to be fed what they would eat in the wild so mice, squirrel, rabbit and other birds like quail or pigeon mostly. When they are small they can’t tear and process their own food as well so you have to help them by cutting it into pieces they can handle. Eventually they will be big and strong enough to catch, kill, pluck the fur or feathers off of the meat and eat other animals.
