Observation: Ono is attacking the osoto from a medium distance. It's not a hook and ken-ken style, he can pretty much always plant his foot immediately but the plant foot protects from osoto gaeshi and allows him both to apply a lot of torque to the upper body and bounce his left foot where he wants it. Contrast it to a classical osoto like Yamashita and the plant foot is way more shallow. Note as well that the only time he throws it without a high collar grip is the last example where uke positions his body for Tori by going for the arm wrap. Ono is known to be strong as hell, I suspect he developed this style to be able to get in position on uke just a quarter second faster and make it so they can't defeat his leverage in a near even position.

It more simple. It's a osotootoshit to Osoto Gari Kombination. The problem with Osoto Gari is that often times because the opponent is able to move the attacked leg, tori loses on leverage. So ono pins the leg of tori by a Osoto otoshi movement and adjust hi planting leg to attack with Osotogari.

@@simbabwe2907 Ono seems to have mastered a lower-percentage (for most people), and perhaps somewhat strength-dependent, technique. Planting osoto seems to be a lot less commonplace than regular or kenken osoto, even at high levels. I'm guessing the reason is its uses are limited to situations where you can give yourself a huge initial advantage in posture. Beginners for some reason are a huge fan of planting the leg without any posture advantage, and getting countered extremely easily doing this technique. For most people in most cases, non-planting osoto seems to give the best bang for buck, and also seems to be safer for both people's knees.

He is allowed to stiff arm and get away with things that other get penalties for.

From my observation, often he wasn’t given stiff arm was because he was the controlling side, despite on occasions where he wasn’t attacking, the uke was more hesitant to enter than him, this gives the referee the illusion that it is the Uke that is defensive. Ono shohei really played the rules well, but his era is over, let’s focus on Hifume Abe who is just as dominant.
