Thank you for this video. I could NOT remember the game I played as a child. It was Dragon Ball Z: The Legend. I had the Japanese import version with no English, and had to rig it to actually work in my American PlayStation. So glad I know what game it was.
The Budokai series, Buu’s Fury, the Tenkaichi series, ALL set the trends for these games man. And Kakarot is amazing. The ONLY thing missing is a versus mode and I find that so irritating.
Fighterz is a really good fighting game too, it reminds me the budokais (no budokai tenkaichi) amazing graphics and very competitive, but its history mode really sucks hahah
I absolutely recommend Dragon Ball for Advanced, shown about half-way through this video. The campaign is awesome and there are characters to unlock to play vs. friends. Tons of fun!

The Ps2/GBA era is way better than what they are releasing today. I lost interest in Dragon Ball when Kai and super came out. The new Voice acting wasn't that great to me. That's my opinion.
For me, it was when DPS came out. DPS super squeaky “clean” animation made a lot of the characters look they just done bathing. The old DB and DBZ have the better shading that work betters with the story tone.
I feel like there is a ps2 dbz game not listed on here, that or I missed it. Can't remember the name, but it was on ps2 and it was a board you moved around on with dotted lines connecting circles. You could see heros as circles as well, like goku, cell etc and you would take turns moving on the board. Once you meet you go into a battle. I miss those types of games, and I miss the tournament's you could do. The 3 newer games are kinda bad, the goku was ok but xenoverse 1 and 2 had horrible stories and no tournaments. Z fighter shouldn't even be a dbz game, its just another mortal combat style game, has nothing to do with dbz aside from the characters. Goku was at least a step in the right direction. But they need a game thats not the same old story played over and over. Need a DBZ game where you make your own character and make your own story mixed into the DBZ story line in an open world setting. Xenoverse was stupid, you just "go back into time" or "jump to another time to fix it" stupid idea. Great fighting, great graphics, but stupid story. So repetitive doing the same story over and over.
Xenoverse 2 has tournaments (technically), one for online play and one for offline Xenoverse’s story, even if you don’t like it, is related to the late Dragon Ball Online and Dragon Ball Heroes, which is very popular in Japan. FighterZ has everything to do with DBZ, everything was made to look like it was DBZ, and a traditional fighting game is literally one of the most fitting things for a series like DBZ, it doesnt even work like MK anyways. And a game where you make your own story that is somewhat connected to the main story is a bad idea unless there is set choices made by the game, it doesnt even resolve your issue with retelling the same old story every game because no matter what you would do in the game you propose would just end up back at that same old story. Also could be wrong but the game you were thinking of at the start could be Budokai 2 in its “story mode” or something like that
In 1986 dragon ball games played like trash they didn’t play great until they got on the PS2 original Xbox same for final fantasy dragon quest games nothing played great there was no arcade machines to save these games from being hated so much like Pac-Man I loved Pac-Man cause of the arcade I even bought the arcade machines and didn’t play on the consoles
