I once met a old fella who told me he knew a story about George Formby when he helped the British in the war. it was about how he changed the lyrics of the song (mid battle field while bullets fly) to cheer up troops
This must be the "clean" version... we had a copy of this on a record when I was a kid, and there was a verse that went (much to my childish amusement): "In my grandad's flannelette night shirt/I got married one day./In the train, my bride gave a shout/"Eeeh, what is that you are pulling out?!"/I said, "I know it's old-fashioned and it's tattered and worn/But I've brought it honeymooning with me, Gert."/When she said "What is it, dear?"/I whispered in her ear, "It's me grandad's flannelette shirt, lordy lordy, me grandad's flannelette shirt!". :-)
We were recently playing a gig and we took out the banjo ukes for a fun strum. A very old English woman in the audience told us that she remembered seeing George Formby with his banjo uke during WW2. She was a very little girl and everybody was stuck down in the Tubes (subway) during bomb raids. He would walk around singing to the people to keep their spirits up.
Haha love this tune, love the sound of the banjo. I remember Jim Royal ( Ricky Tomlinson) in the Tv show the royal family playing this tune on the banjo in one of the episodes lol
Okay, this is really bothering me. I can tell that he's not really talking about a nightshirt, but I can't for the life of me figure out what he is talking about.

Still Great in 2024
George was on fire in this scene, I love how he stares and winks at the camera, what a lovely fella he was.

What a great classic and lyrics..
This guy is so cute! I remember Formby's funny song about the window washer, loved it as a child. Thanks for posting!

Wow that’s actually really amazing
I have such fond memories of hearing this on an old 78 in my Nan's front room. Cheers for sharing this.
Me to
I used to watch them with my gran too
Mr. George Formby in 2020. Funny songs. The reason I'll be learning Uke.
George was brilliant loved watching him as a kid in 1970s and 80s with my gran on Friday night bbc2!
David Maggs every night there was a film on BBC2 at 6pm. Formby was always on. Bus is the best Formby movie by a mile.....and all of them were good
Legend 🙏

I guess he interesting the troops in real life during WW2.
Give it a minute...

I think it's about the same thing as Tom Lehrer's I Got It From Agnes.
They're about STDs :-)
It is a nightshirt he's talking about
Not stds they wouldn't know a std or call it something else
@@johndavid7498 Like they might call it a nightshirt.
People knew what STD's WERE.
Just a nightshirt.
it's a joke song
