There is really noting to prepare except warming the clay so it is easer to sculpt. I usually slice the clay into about 1/2" slices and set them under a lamp. The heat from the lamp will make the clay a bit softer.
Right cheek bone check. I love to add the Sean Connery line that runs threw the cheek and underneath the chin. It looks like a big smile etched into ones' face. Happy Halloween!
You are welcome and thank you for your comments! I agree with you. I too prefer to watch many of the RUclips videos without noise! I think you should. You'll find it therapeutic. :)
The sketching part goes quick, but as the sculpture develops, it takes longer and longer. I think the whole thing took a bout a week, a few hours a day.
Hi I am an artist and did my first sculpture today and it came out 100% perfect. While i was watching some videos like this to learn I realised there is a need for a invention to help sculptors. I am therefore looking for a pro who is interested in having a new device developed and marketed in their name this. I have over 200 invention ideas and am working on a dozen big projects so I do not have time to chase anything like this myself. It may benefit sculptors if the device is not already in the market. If you are interested then let me know.
Pure astonishing. How do you actually get started to do all this?! There are so many tutorials and materials I wouldn't know where to begin! Amazing work! I am going to have to try and get into sculpting, as I have always excited the idea of making busts of myself.
Hola!. Quiero saber si la estructura que usas debe retirarse en algun momento, o si esta se queda dentro debo usar algo que no se descomponga con el tiempo?. Mil gracias de antemano
Really enjoyed the video. Have a question regarding the clay. Am I understanding correctly that it never hardens? What if you want to create a sculpture that will last a long time? Can you recommend a clay that will harden but does not have to be fired?
generally there are three process to produce a sculpture that will last forever, mostly lol. 1. Modelling (the one that you can see in this video) 2. Moulding (Once you are satisfied with your clay model you can make its mould using various materials, example: silicone rubber, plaster of paris, latex, etc. 3. Casting (Finally, when the mould is made. the clay an be removed and re used in other projects. Then a material such as wax, resin, plaster of paris can be poured or casted into that mould) Finally just remove the mould and you may have an exact copy of the model you made in clay. I hope this clears you :) :) :)
Hi, Because I'm using an oil based clay that stays soft for ever, I do not remove the armature or the foam filler. If you are using a type of clay that has to be fired in a kiln, it cannot contain the materials I have used.
I just watched ur video and enjoyed it very much. I have never worked with that type of clay. Is that something u eventually kiln fire? If so at what point in your series do you removefoam board? Thanks for posting your videos they are excellent.
\you are amazing!! I really want to get into sculpting ,any suggestions on to where to start ,any good books or dvd's you can suggest ? thank you and greeting from Montreal !
Where do I find foam fillers and that pipe that you were using for the base structure? They seem like they would save a lot of money! Great work, thanks for the upload
That is a line laser for circular saw with a magnetic base. You can purchase it at Harbor Freight for about $5.00. I used it to find the center line instead of putting a mark on the clay with a knife.
I used that line laser to mark the center of the sculpture for symmetry proposes. The laser device is sold at "Harbor Freight Tools" and it is for circular saws for cutting straight line. It was about $5.00.
Great video. I just have a question about drying and shrinkage. It doesn't appear like the PVC or armature would allow for the clay shrinkage when dry. Is this because of the type of clay you are using?
hey, the clay that he is using is an oil based clay which is non drying and re usable. some of the brand names are nsp, monster clay, etc. in order to make ur work permanent you will have to follow these three processes: 1. Modelling (the one that you can see in this video) 2. Moulding (Once you are satisfied with your clay model you can make its mould using various materials, example: silicone rubber, plaster of paris, latex, etc. 3. May I ask, what were u shaping his head with under the clay (what did you put inside to " / / /N /MB. /M/CC/GSSSSGET⅝T¹5¹4 and how did you make the pipe stand? I would appreciate some advice. I want to have something fun to show my family what I can RR" . I need a choppy
I used pieces of insulating foam as a filler for 2 reasons; one, to make the sculpture lighter and second, to conserve using clay. The pipe stand is just a piece of wood I sanded and stained. Then I drilled two wholes for the PVC pipes fittings to be secured on it.
Hi there - this has inspired me to give sculpting a go, but I need to make the armature stand first ---- I'm thinking a block of wood and then pvc piping as you have here, but (forgive me, I'm totally new to this) how is the piping fixed to the wood? What provides the sturdy structure / holds it fast? Also, do you / how do you remove the head from the piping when its finished? :)
+Matthew Walpole Thank you for your comments! The bit I had was just a little bigger than the thickness of the pipe. I used some painter's masking tape to increase the thickness for a tight fitting. This Sculpture is made from an oil based clay and it won't dry out. The pipe and the foam stays inside.
this is a non drying clay. to make your work permanent you have to: 1. Modelling (the one that you can see in this video) 2. That is right, unless you cut the sculpture in half, when it is halfway dry, and remove the inner parts. like the armature and so-forth. You can then make sure your sculpture walls are around 1" thick. poke some holes on the inside of the sculpture walls with a tool like a fork and reassemble the two halves together, repair any blemishes and then fire it in a Kiln.
Hey nice work. Quick question, how much of the Roma Plasticina did you use? I'm doing a project in which I need to sculpt a head like this and I want to know about how much I need?
+LEOGTLEO Thank you for your comments! I'm not sure how many types of clay there are. I have worked with Air Dry clay and oil base clay. I like to work with oil based clay, because it won't dry out and the best one for the price for me has been J-Mac Clay. You can purchase it from Amazon.
Oh my God! This tutorial says more than other videos and anyone's talking! a really good job and probably when I get more clay I will ask you for help (maybe) :P
3DworlD2 as expected I need your help!!.. I sculpted fast without problems but only one problem made my job very difficult. the clay I used, hardened very faster. I worked for 1.30h and it started to be hard after 1 hour. Did you have the same problem or you used another type of clay? or maybe there are some tips to make the clay not become harder. ***** No problem, you can ask any question, I may not have all the answers :). I don't sculpt with Air Dry Clay often just for that reason. It is very hard to keep the clay from drying while you are deciding what to do next. You could do some of these suggestions; Don't sculpt in front of a windy spot, keep the clay moist by spraying water on it with a spry bottle every so often, As soon as you will need to take a brake from sculpting, cover the sculpture with a plastic and seal it. I prefer to sculpt with Oil Based Clay that stays soft for ever.
Is there another name for Roma Plasticina? I'm in the Uk and things can be quite hard to come by sometimes. Or just search for oil based plasticine? Wicked video.
Thank you for your comments! This one was called Roma Plastilina and I think I either purchased it from Amazon or Dick Blick Art supply, but you can use any oil based clay to sculpt with. I would recommend something like J-Mac Clay.
The laser was just to indicate the center line so I can make it more symmetrical. This was sculpted using an oil based clay that is not fired. It stays soft always.

is this air dry clay or non dry clay?..i sculpt myself using terracota but its not so moist and flexible.can you also suggest me some good material clay that drys?
No, this was sculpted with an oil based clay that stays soft. If you get a fresh box of air dry clay it is very soft to work with and will air dry hard. Any of your art supply stores should have that or search on internet for air dry clay.
That was one of the loop tools in a pottery tool set. You can order it from Amazon. www.amazon.com/DY3S-SE08-19-Piece-Pottery-Tool/dp/B00HMDD64U/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1458608340&sr=8-6&keywords=Sculpting+tools

Thank you for your comments! I'm glad these videos were helpful to you. You will find sculpting with clay is very therapeutic.
clay is very easy to handle as compared to wood, stone or marble.
idk theres something super calming about watching this ahah
Gwen Evans lol...Thank you for your comments! :)

.. we are sculpting heads in my art class..
But yours...
Is so magesticly artisticly amazing.
+Bebe Shybug that is very kind of you to say that. Thank you! :)
+3DworlD2 Haha you're welcome.
Omg you make it look so easy the tools you use really helps to save your time, i should have those tools too
Thank you for your kind comments! Right tools are a must. :)
I like the idea that your have made a big head instead of a little model and it is easier to make it affective
Amazing! I am 13, being very interested in art, especially sculpting and this helped me out heaps to improve my sculpting.
Thank you for your comments!
It's nice to see younger people are getting interested in sculpting. Keep on sculpting!

+Rit Man well, I think most likely we were Evolved, rather than designed.
Wow! You guys have greate ideas! Thanks! I think this first part may have taken about 2-3 hours.
Thanks! The one I have done with oil clay stays soft, but if you want it hard, you'll have to use something like air dry clay.
absolutely wonderful. By the way: thanks for NOT adding sound. Wish more tutoriasls on youtube dropped the noise...

Oh wow 2-3 hrs!! how much time did the whole sculpture from start to finish take?
this is masterpiece!... how to make it strength? since you said it will never dry.
the foam sheets that you use as a filler doesn't affect the sculpture when you bake it?
wow ! just wow, that was amazing.
Thank you! :)

does this clay air dry? or does it remain pliable?, or maybe you have to wrap it or something to preserve it?

whats the laser tool used at the end, and how do you make sure there are no air bubbles in it, do you fire it.
like how many of the Roma Plastilina #2 did you use ?
very nice , sorry whats the material
Marvelous....video
Thank you so much. Your video helped a lot. I will watch the other parts also...
its very good video. how I can save it
can you put some background music to it as well. It is actually just calming to watch a sculpture being made. Thanks :)
This is so fascinating.... cant wait to do this soon! :)
Fantástico!!!!, me gustaría saber cuanto tiempo le llevo hacer este rostro!
Thank you! I think it took about a couple of weeks working on it on and off.

Hello from Texas! Thank you! :)
Coyld you tell me if this is natural grey clay or chemical one?

is it oily ?????? i heard about it but never used it
I'm not familiar with the toe of clay you are using but do you fire it in a kiln? and if so how did you do that?
This is an oil based clay called Roma Plasilina that will stay soft always and it is not fired in a kiln.

This technique probably can not be used with clay that must be kiln fired, would that be correct?
That is right, unless you cut the sculpture in half, when it is halfway dry, and remove the inner parts. like the armature and so-forth. I prefer to sculpt with Oil Based Clay that stays soft for ever.

does plastilina for sculpting works the same? cause i cant make it look like.. soo smooth :( please help

Hello E Jay and thank you. Yeah you are right. It is mostly for my own pleasure and at the same time sharing my love of art with others.

What is the hardness of oil clay ?
This was Roma Plastilina Gray-green No. 2 Medium.
I think so, but you'll still have to handle the sculpture with care.
what are you using as the base/platform that allows your piece to rotate side to side ?
This one in the video is an artists turntable. here is a link to see the whole thing. www.madisonartshop.com/turntable.html
You can get a tabletop model that is similar, but a lot less expensive at Amazon. www.amazon.com/US-Art-Supply-Sculpting-Construction/dp/B00PR9R4TO
