    RSV sucks 😩
My kiddo got RSV bronchiolitis at 5 weeks old and it was the most brutal thing we’ve ever been through. I still remember his oxygen going down to 63 and I just felt like I was dieing inside. There is nothing worse than watching your little ones struggle.
He was only in the hospital on high flow oxygen and ng tube for 10 days but he was sick and struggled to breathe for months 😔

My baby had RSV at 4 months old. It was horrible. I was so unhappy and she was in so much pain. She was hospitalized for over a week. They treated this with the same precautions with covid. I couldn't leave the room. She was in an isolated room with clear lettering on her door that if you enter the room you will be exposed to her illness. We almost missed the Thanksgiving holidays with family.

Our children have reactive airway disease and are very susceptible to RSV. My daughter was the only kid in her daycare room that was hospitalized (for 7 days) when all the other kids fared it fine. Watch out for RSV if your kids seem to be breathing faster than normal when sick, wheezing and/or retracting (the skin pulls in around the ribs). Those are distress signals and a dr can give steroids in more severe situations, like Decadron and Prednisone, to open the airways when the sticky RSV mucous clogs them up. They might also send you home with Albuterol and/or Budesonide airway treatments to do at home. Saline spray mist and cool mist humidifiers are great tools to keep the nose and throat clear of mucous so that it can maximize air flow and will not prolong the virus. A pulse oximeter is handy when the case is more severe. It’s good to know that if a child’s oxygen is borderline 80’s/90’s it becomes even more dangerous as oxygen decreases more rapidly over time whereas in the 90’s it is more a gradual curve shaped rate. Get your baby to a dr if you are in this situation, it should not just be monitored from home. Also chest percussions (cup your hand and pound lightly on the chest and back while your baby is sitting up) to break up mucous in the lungs. This should not hurt your baby, in fact my kids seem to like it when they are not feeling good with RSV. It’s hard to see your child feel so sick and a lot of work when it is RSV. Adults also can get worse cases of RSV when immunocompromised or have lung damage already but our airways are bigger so the threat of low oxygen is lower also. Take care everyone!

RSV this year is particularly rough. We had our 7th baby hospitalized at 13 weeks for oxygen and airflow support. He did great with the help and we were out in 4 days. It was classic for us with a day 5 peak. Our 4 yrs and 2 yrs old got it and rode it out at home well. But whole families in our community got it and even the adults were super sick for weeks. Thanks for the Info Dr Paul! Im sure it would be super helpful if you were able to show the infant head bobbing and chest retractions of rsv for people to be able to recognize when they need to go the hospital.

"I have good news; your child has RSV." Really? That isn't good news. Good news would be nothing but a common cold. My daughter had it at 3 years old and has bad asthma. I caught it at 39 and it took us a month to get over it with multiple trips to the urgent care and a trip to the ER for me. She has RSV right now and is 4 years old. It is especially hard on her because of the asthma. We know how to treat it better at home this year, but it still took 3 visits to the urgent care with the doctors saying that it was just a common cold before they finally tested her for RSV. I have gotten really sick as well. Maybe worse than the RSV I had last year. RSV has impacted our family much worse than COVID did.

He was even too weak to breast feed. I had to express the milk and give it using an easy-flow bottle. Now, THAT was scary! All those tubes and lines coming out of his tiny body... I had RSV as an adult about a month ago. I actually got it right after I had covid. They say that RSV in an adult is!"just a cold" but this was way more than a cold.
My 17 year old got it first. She was really sick. But we didn't know what it was. Then I got it. I was really sick too. I ended up on the ER and they did a respiratory pathogen panel. I tested positive for RSV. About a week after I got it my 14 year old got it and she was pretty sick too.
In our experience RSV was a couple of days of cold like symptoms followed by a 7 day decent into hell (getting worse) theb a 7 day trip back from hell. Finally wrapping up with 1-2 weeks of lingering sniffle and cough.

My peep had RSV at 2 WEEKS old (got it from his older brother). He was waaay too small and weak to cough out the mucus. He had to be hospitalized (with oxygen supply) for a week. He was even too weak to breast feed. I had to express the milk and give it using an easy-flow bottle. Now, THAT was scary! All those tubes and lines coming out of his tiny body... Now he is 9 months old and we still dread the smallest cough as it can easily develop into pneumonia and lend him back in hospital (happened several times). Eh...

I wish more parents would get their child to the doctors and be tested.
I have a class of children that sound and look like this little one. I swear at least a few of them have RSV. They cough in each other’s face spreading the germs. The parents wonder why I put a mask on. Can’t say it’s because I’m tired of your child coughing in my face.

I'm very curious, I was never vaccinated as a baby/kid from anything, I KNOW I had whooping cough. I'm now 44 years old, and wondering if there are any studies about if having whooping cough as a kid can affect people later in life like me (I have COPD and asthma) Just a curiosity question if you want to answer, if not, maybe point me to a few research studies? I can't find any online, it's all about kids instead of adult outcomes. Thank you Dr. Paul! You're an awesome doctor and I've still got my fingers crossed for you, I don't have enough $ to support you, but hopefully have been helping by subscribing and all that jazz 👍🔔 Keep up the good work!

Having had asthma since I was a toddler I’ve always been told that pretty much any mid/lower respiratory issues can lead to breathing problems later. I had RSV when I was a baby and have had asthma pretty much ever since. But there were some other factors there as well. The biggest one is that my dad smoked a lot and couldn’t always avoid me not breathing it in. Even if he stepped away it stayed in his clothes:

First seems like momma is having problems transitioning to a bottle 😂 My twins had RSV at 2 months old. My son went into the hospital and his twin sister went in on Christmas night. Both where in different rooms for a night, then put into rooms that wall could open up. Sister had to be med flighted to a Mott’s Children in Ann Arbor Michigan. Went into picu was in hospital for 11 days. We almost lost her it was so bad.
If your children stomachs sucks in with a breath and all the other things Dr Paul is talking about
Edited: while in hospital they put a rubber tub down her nose into airway to suck out the mucus it was so bad. To this day every time she gets sick it gets into her lungs, her brother usually if he gets a cold it’ll go to his lungs and he’ll sound croupy when he coughs.

I'm not sure about antivirals however when my kids had it they were given a nebulizer and albuterol
As far as I know that's pretty much all that can be done

Antiviral can be beneficial from day or 2nd day, otherwise it is not much of a help. Elderberry is very good and Olbas syrup.

There is a shot they give high risk babies to help with RSV. They are extra antibodies to help fight it. But this is precautionary
