  • Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh kick off day two of the 2014 Cheltenham Festival with success for the incomporable Faugheen.
    The unbeaten gelding raced prominently and, despite flattening the third-last, he had all his rivals in trouble as they turned for home.
    “Gosh, that was magic wasn’t it?” said winning owner Rich Ricci afterwards. “He was just brilliant. His jumping was always going to be a bit of a concern and I thought his mistake three out could have cost him.
    “I don’t always watch them jumping the last and I didn’t again here. Maybe I should start watching them though as he was amazing at the last. Willie is just magic, isn’t he?”
    It wasn’t all plain sailing for Faugheen on the build up to the Grade One contest, however, as the star hurdler suffered various setbacks. Ricci explained: “He’s been a very hard horse to keep right but Willie and Ruby have done a fantastic job with him. He’s not the biggest and he’s had a lot of niggles throughout the season. Most of his health issues have been with his back.”
    Faugheen went on to win the Champion Hurdle 12 months later and again remained unbeaten that season. He then made racing history later in his career when bagging a Grade One novice chase as a 12-year-old.

    Faugheen reminds me so much of Golden Cygnet , the brilliant Irish novice hurdler who was undefeated before he tragically died days after his devastating fall in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr . He could have turned out to be the greatest of all had he lived. He was some talent. Faugheen has the potential to fill that void. I cannot foresee anything but victory for Wullie Mullins' star . I expect Ruby Walsh is counting down the days with an expectant grin on his face.

    That manoeuvre between 4:30 and 4:35 though.. that was a thing of beauty.. lets hope he comes back and regains his title.. He's the best hurdler we've seen since Istabraq.. a phenomenal racehorse.. and I'm happy to have believed in him from the very beginning! :D

    From those at the forefront in this race: Faugheen, ST, RS, Creepy, ColeH, only the machine managed not only to stay in front but to extend his lead. RS took him on from 4 out and Faugheen destroyed him, ColeH soon started to backpedal, while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th all came from the rear. Faugheen also destroyed the runner-up who had to be left home for the next season with his trainer quoting this race as the primary cause. The 3rd home was also kept home for the start of this season probably hasn't yet fully recovered.
    Basically those who tried to live with Faugheen speed were absolutely smashed for that race or for the entire next season. Consider also that Faugheen had similar finishing time from 4 out like Jezki had in the CH, however Faugheen had to cover an extra 5 furlongs.
    Who's going to beat this machine I wonder... Hopefully Jezki, TNO will arrive at Chelt in good heart and will give this Faugheen a proper race. I really hope they'll be able to get him off the bridle so that we finally learn his ability limits. Otherwise we'll never learn what this beast is capable of.

    Can not wait for this sh*t next year.. the Willie Mullins brigade are destined for greatness.. and leading the way will be this monster of a horse.. this was the performance of the whole festival and probably my favourite performance for years

    So called experts saying this was a weak Neptune in all the previews nights should be ashamed and stop pre-judge a race and wait a couple of seasons till judging it.
    The winner went on to win the Champion Hurdle the next season.
    The front runner Cole Harden who tried to live with Faugheen speed from 4 out paid at the end and went on to win the World Hurdle the next season.
    The 2nd and 3rd(Ballyalton and Rathvinden who came from off the pace) had top form coming into the race but haven't run since, the trainers reporting that this race took everything out of them, the same with Red Sherlock who also made the mistake of trying to stay with Faugheen speed from 4 out.

      makoceans Then there is Shanahan's Turn who went on chasing winning a Grade 2 and the Galway Plate Grade A handicap...again I remember the so called experts saying that year Neptune was a weak one... LOL

    F*ck me this really is a machineee! The way it came off the bridle and then back on as it swung for home was the sign of a superstar... this horse is going places.. Vautour's jumping is light years ahead but Faugheen's engine is incredible.. the future looks very bright with this type of quality coming through the ranks.

    Faugheen is a beast of a horse and if it hurdles well will win but i'm just not convinced by it's hurdling. Makes too many mistakes and against better horses could well get found out. The New One wasn't as badly impeded as some say last year and has been jumping to the right. Jezki is the value bet IMO, 9-2 is a steal and let's remember that last years race was hyped as one of the most competitive ever.

  • @MTumbles

    Faugheen the Machine! Wow

  • @Hen71557
    @Hen71557 9 лет назад

    He's a long striding horse who's legs get underneath him at slower pace, that, IMO, is the only reason his jumping at times can look a bit untidy..the quicker they go the better it'll suit Faugheen, we all know they'll go arses on fire in the CH but I'm predicting Ruby won't be afraid to make his own running..if McCoy can ride Jezki properly & not make another bollock of it, he IMO, is the one for me most likely to make a race of it...

  • @irishcowboy42
    @irishcowboy42 10 лет назад

    I always reckoned that the quicker they went the better he would jump and they still didn't go quick enough in this race, remember this is a horse that beat Josses Hill (2nd in Supreme and winner at Aintree) by 22 lengths at Punchestown last year over 2 miles. I thought that next years Champion Hurdle was ideal and then W. Mullins says that he will probably go chasing along with Vatour (winner of Supreme)… they must think that this Un de Sceaux is the next coming if thats the case.

      Tomas Kavanagh You seriously think The Fly would have beat him the other day? .. Visually, he'ls clearly the greatest hurdler around.. and official ratings say too as well.. I think he could be as good as Istabraq.. I don't know how you can doubt the horses stamina and speed, it's pretty ridiculous.. Only Un De Sceaux could mix it with him tbh..

      The day I see The New One going the same pace as Faugheen and eye-balling him is the day I quit as a punter.. Yes, no horse can power up the hill like TNO, but many can fly down it even better.. leaving him with too much to do at the last.. Goodluck! :)

    tomas kavanagh knows what he is talkin about... pure bollox, hurricane fly sure he was a great horse still is and always will be, but if you cant see the greatness of Faugheen go to spec savers and for all the New One fans the horse is less then useless yeah I said it he wouldnt ever want to come to punchestown cause he would be made a show of. so when the likes of lee guest and co give there very poor opinion of how faugheens jumping will let him down and what not always believe your eyes what you see.cause some people on here would not know when they have eaten enough never mind talk sense about horses, Faugheen is the real deal, 2mile 2mile 5f, 3 miles it all comes the same to the machine cause good horses real good ones like him can do that. you have been schooled by the Lazla! tomas kavanagh and lee guest hang your heads in shame and bow before the mighty Faugheen!! ha ha sickner
