I wanna point out that this channel is not only a place for great content but also my go to for music suggestions. Geebz, I really enjoy this environment you created. Thank you
As mentioned elsewhere Godspeed You! Black Emperor and 'Dead Flag Blues' is one of the most memorable post rock tracks for me, but 65daysofstatic (from my birth city) and 'I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood', and This Will Destroy You and 'I Believe in Your Victory' are others. There are so many good bands to choose from.
Check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor. One of my favorite post rock bands and they’re not like anything else I’ve ever heard. The Dead Flag Blues or Sleep are good places to start
That song is how I first heard of this group, a free track from Amazon. Then watched Les Revenants and they did that soundtrack. Mogwai are trippy awesome.
Mogwai have actually done quite a lot of soundtrack work, both as a band and in collaboration with other composers (e.g. with Clint Mansell for the soundtrack to The Fountain). This song is somewhat atypical for them as it has vocals (most of their music doesn't), but it's a great track. Mogwai are often considered the top of the heap of post-rock for very good reason.
I'm loving your post-rock dissections! I really hope Svefn-g-Englar by Sigur Rós will pop up during post-rock week, as well as some Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Yes yes yes! The Kings of post rock! I've seen Mogwai live about a dozen times and they never fail to deliver. They have a more than considerable body of work to explore, I'd suggest "Mogwai fear Satan" next, to really get to the core of their sound and style.
Mogwai are known for their long, drawn out, guitar driven instrumental tracks. Often with little to no no vocals at all. "Auto rock" or "Glasgow mega snake" would be good choices for slightly shorter tracks.
@@Bridgercraft Great songs! There's a shortened version of Mogwai Fear Satan on the Special Moves live album too. I like it just as much in its condensed form.
Great video! I wholeheartedly agree with the "Mogwai fear satan" suggestions, but I personally think "Two rights make one wrong" would be a great track to do a video on. It has a bit of everything that makes Mogwai so brilliant.
I would suggest This Will Destroy You, imo one of the greats of the genre and even better live. Listen to Happiness: Were all in it together, or The mighty Rio Grande. Promise this band will blow you away.
As a long-time Mogwai fan, Oh man I'm so happy. TY for reacting to this! :D Rock Action is an amazing album. If you want a sampler of the first half of Mogwai's discography then Special Moves is a live album with a very nice mix. It has a shortened (but incredible) version of Mogwai Fear Satan, which is a song some are suggesting. They have a very clear progression album to album and there's a lot to pick apart if you get into them.
Looking through my Mogwai stuff now, I've got so much, vinyls and cds... I bought their first 7" when it came out in 1996: Tuner/Lower on Rock Action. Twenty five years later they got their first UK Album #1 with As the Love Continues in February this year. Saw them every time they came here (Montréal) and played them hundred of times on my radio show, which lasted 23 years. Funny our host picked one of the rare song with lyrics (and not Aidan Moffat!). And I agree with everyone: MOGWAI FEAR SATAN must be next. And yes live, dear host, Mogwai are quite amazing.
Mogwai is my favorite band to listen to when I’m having trouble sleeping, although I also enjoy listening to them when I just wanna chill. This is one of my favorite songs by them. It’s so sweet and airy, it takes me away from everything. It was fun watching you react to it. I’m not at all surprised that you enjoyed it. All of Mogwai’s music is good, but I recommend focusing on their early stuff initially, before moving on to their later work.
Great choice! If you havent checked out Godspeed You! Black Emperor then i would highly recommend it. 'Dead Flag Blues' is probably the first song of theirs i ever heard. That was many years ago, and ive been a huge fan ever. 'Sleep' is another great one. I would love to see a reaction to some of their stuff.
Went to see them in Glasgow Barrowlands with my dad and brother about 6 or 7 years ago. Amazing band to watch live. Just a massive soundscape that really takes you away from everything.
Mogwai is a very special band! Here's a few other suggestions for future dissections: Mogwai Fear Satan, Auto Rock, I'm Jim Morrison I'm Dead, I Know You Are But What Am I?, White Noise, How To Be A Werewolf. You're the best Geebz!!! 😊
I know this is a year old and you probably won’t see my comment, but I love that you said “simple is not easy”… the amount of times I have to say that to clients in my business is astonishing. I’m a tattoo artist and it’s basically a guarantee that a few times a week I hear, “oh, it’s really simple, no big deal.” And I’m like, “breaux! Simple is typically the hardest thing to do! Whether it’s illustration, music, dance, sobriety… whatever it is.”
Post-Rock request: If These Trees Could Talk - "The Here and Hereafter" We're gonna need more info on what changes on Nov. 18th. Are you stopping, being stopped, or moving on to something different? I hope the decomposition process is not complete, yet, you help me re-experience music.
Can't talk about modern post rock without talking about If These Trees. The entire The Bones of a Dying World album is such a rich musical storytelling experience. The Here and Hereafter definitely a fantastic pick, Iron Glacier and Berlin also top tier soundscapes to sink into!
Thee Silver Mt. Zion's "Black Waters Blowed/Engine Broke Blues" is an emotional powerhouse, also their song "God Bless Our Dead Marines" (well, and pretty much every thing they've done). They also have strings (violin and upright bass) along with their guitars and bass guitars. Silver Mt. Zion is one of several offshoot projects of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who really put post-rock on the map, but ended up having an even bigger impact on me over the years.
I saw Mogwai live in Buenos Aires and was completely blown away by their performance and the vibe that was generated among the audience. The wall of sound makes you float. One of the most memorable experiences of my life. Also, the song "Rano Pano" live is something else.
Also would like to recommend Oceansize. A bit on the heavier end of post-rock with vocals. Music for a Nurse is their most famous. Personal favorite is Trail of Fire, what a trip!!
I have just two main suggestions: Mono and Tortoise. Saw both of them live. It's fuckin amazing what they can do. It's sooo nice seeing you ride the Post Rock train, great music awaits.
Geebz, if you’re doing post-rock/metal, you’ve got to check out Alcest. Their song Eclosion is still one of the best I’ve heard from these flavors of music.
@@caiograciano7562 Very true, their whole discography is great (even Shelter, though it’s different from everything else) so it’s hard to pick a bad point to jump in.
Thanks for listening to Mogwai! Another great breakdown. One of the best live bands I've seen. I remember at some point during a show being in a trance and feeling the sound passing through my body and levitating me. PS. Mogwai can produce those incredible layers live, and I would say they are more powerful live than the restraint of many of their recordings.
Yes that's exactly what i think too. The live performance is outstanding, they take the songs up to a new level. I'm from Argentina, i saw them only once, and it was the most beautiful experience i had, at least in terms of sound. I remember just feeling the vibration from the drum bass hitting in my body like lazer shots or something like that. I also remember i made an english friend right before the show started, i shared with him my blunt and later saw his face enjoying the music as much as i did. We all were so happy that night, thanks to Mogwai.
@@MAF93Arg so glad to hear that other people have had a similar experience at mogwai show. Ps... I'm from Canada and have seen them 3 times and have never been disappointed.
I have listened to a bit of Mogwai and never disappoints. Please do some Crosses songs, it is a Chino Moreno's side project that he has had for a while now. Cheers and greetings from Australia! Keep up the good work Geebz!
Cool! Another band I need to look into. This channel has allowed me to discover a few new things now. And as previously mentioned, MONO would be cool to see you melt into. Song 'Death In Rebirth' for a start. I also dig bands Russian Circles and If These Trees Could Talk.
Just want to take this opportunity to suggest some Neurosis again. One of the original "post metal" bands - post rock with metal guitars and growling. Imho the album "the eye of every Storm" is their best, particularly the title track, or "A Season In the sky". However there is a lively debate among fans on which era is their best, so be prepared to have people question whatever track you choose.
Love your channel! Post rock suggestions/requests: Caspian - Dust and Disquiet Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Mladic This Will Destroy You - Dustism Sigur Rós - Svefn-g-englar Holy Fawn - Drag Me into the Woods If you only pick one from this list though, I hope it's Caspian.
Have a listen to 'Hunted by a Freak' by Mogwaii or for your Shoegaze history try 'Today' or 'Nowhere' by Ride, or Slowdive 'Catch a Breaze', 'Avalyn', or The Jennifers 'Just Got Back Today' by a 16 year old Gaz Coombs from Supergrass.
Geebz you’re true, honest and direct in a time where every one is in a state of disarray. I’m speaking for me (of course) you’re what RUclips needs right now. Happy one year anniversary in November 😁😁😁
Another artist of a similar genre: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - East Hastings (this is probably thier most famous song) Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (just a track I like)
I was familiar with Mogwai from their soundtrack work, so I was confused as hell to see something from them described as "post rock". I just thought they were ambient/electronic. Now I'm realizing... there's a BAND there, isn't there! :p
If you’re doing post-rock, check out Slint. They practically invented it and influenced Mogwai and countless others. Check Good Morning, Captain or Nosferatu Man.
Really stoked you're doing a shoegaze week. I have a couple of bands to suggest: 65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood (mostly instrumental band from across the pond) - A Place To Bury Strangers - To Fix The Gash In Your Head (loud, leaning towards the noise side of post rock).
finaly some post-rock, so glad you got here! I was only lucky enough to see them live once, one of the best concerts ive ever been too. This is a nice song, but they're really good with theyre dynamics, and that doesnt really show on this track. I recomend you get to listen to the new album. ther's some videos of them performing some songs fom that album live on bbc. can't recomend thos videos enogh!! you're defenetly doing some godspeed you black emperor right?? they're very long songs, but very great songs!!
I had Mogwai tickets about 10 years ago but was too sick to go (not a simple illness unfortunately). Have to see them in the future though! As far as GY!BE, Moya or East Hastings would be fantastic. A Silver Mt. Zion has some cool stuff too (side band).
Wow, strong shoegaze influence on the vocal approach here. Interesting stuff! Reminds me to remind you of another shoegaze-adjacent band: HUM. I’d love to hear what you hear in a song like “Afternoon With the Axolotls” and “Isle of the Cheetah.”
Not sure if they are considered post rock as I'm no sub-genre expert, but two of my favorite instrumental bands that sound similar to this are Tristeza (album A Colores in particular) and Saxon Shore
I have used this song countless times to set the mood for people experiencing their first dimethyltryptamine encounter. It's interesting to see you react to this song as it has been such a mainstay in my life for 20 years 😋
I had the privilege of seeing 'Mono' perform in Australia about 10+ years ago... If you could, listen to "You Are There" because it was absolutely mindblowing all those years ago and i still love them to this day
Loving the suggestions so far too. Godspeed you! Black Emperor - Dead Flag Blues is a must. Any track from We Lost the Sea's album 'Departure Songs' would be amazing. So glad you are dipping into the world of post-rock and hopefully post-metal too.
Oh boy, can't wait for ISIS! Best song is Grinning Mouths imho. Edit: Also, if you want some absolutely excellent post rock, you have to check out If these trees could talk. Song suggestions: Barren lands of the modern dinosaur, left to rust and rot, malabar front
The only reason I know Mogwai. Over 15 years ago I worked in a store that bought and sold things. People would bring in CDs, and I mean stacks of CDs, some people would bring in brand new albums, cause they just wanted a pure rip of the album, or people clearing old collections. I mean, were talking people selling Smashing pumpkins box sets, rare concert LPs for NIN, and almost any other album you could think of. And I ripped CDs to no end. we had a stereo where i could give some of the CDs a listen, and if I liked the first 20 seconds even a bit, straight into the laptop. Someone brought in Mogwai, happy songs for happy people, and I was hooked. The entire Atomic took me on an adventure, before I started smoking pot, and now that I do.... I will get back to you about that.
If I were to recommend a Mogwai track, I'd say New Paths to Helicon is a great demonstration of their loud-quiet dynamics and what makes them so powerful.
I know that I am characteristically late to the show, but slightly earlier Mogwai had some powerful compositions that were on par with the combination of The Who + Philip Glass with the tonal discipline of Black Sabbath. See: Like Herod, Summer, Mogwai Fear Satan, and Helicon 2. It's astounding in the genre of Post Rock. I can tell you that live, these tracks are not only represented honorably, but far exceeded. I'd adore seeing reactions to this period. And, as always, thanks for all you do!! Despite being a life-long music head, I've been introduced to some crazy-good artists through you.
great to see you tackle Mogwai, live they are a massive force! :-) and for some extra Mogwai flavour, Mogwai Fear Satan is a great track to showcase their heavier sound.
GEEEEEEEBZ! So glad you're exploring some post rock! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out TOE. A Japanese math rock / post rock hybrid! I recommend either, "All I Understand Is That I Don't Understand" or, "C" or, " Goodbye (Album version)" PRETTY PLEEEEEEAAAAASSEEE 🙏🙏🙏 I think you'd really dig them. The drums... oh gosh, THE DRUMS...
Wonderful breakdown of this track as always Geebz. I like many other have been waiting for the post-rock week, and loads of great suggestions in the comments all ready. For me, to ensure you get that full crescendo experience in your post-rock music, my pick has to be "God is an astronaut - Suicide by Star". It's a great track, and also shows a bit of the range of post-rock. Eagerly awaiting the next day, honestly you could pick anything its like Christmas!
MOGWAI “San Pedro” is a must! Also, working for a nuclear free city “rocket”, “kingdom”, “the tape”, are also a must! Same with Boom Boom satellites “anthem”, “dive for you”, “stride” are also tracks to check out with a Geebz analysis!
For more post-rock stuff, but mixed with metal - you should check out Sólstafir - Svartir Sandar. The lyrics are in Icelandic so you won't need to worry about them!
Suggestions: 1. CAN (Tracks from: Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, or Future Days) 2. Talk Talk (any track off either albums: Laughing Stock or Spirit of Eden) 3. Dukes of the Stratosphear (My Love Explodes) 4. The Mars Volta (Roulette Dares or Take The Veil) 5. Jim James - Eternally Even (entire album would 🤯) 6. Pantera - You’ve Got to Belong To it 7. Aphex Twin 8. Patato Y Totico 🤟😎🍻
If you end up listening to more Mogwai at some point in the future I hope you react to songs from the Come On Die Young or Happy Songs For Happy People albums, one of my favorite bands of all time and its really great to see your reactions to this track
Some prog/art rock bands also walked into post rock territory in some songs. Like Anathema in Dreaming Light or Nosound in Some Warmth Into This Chill. Totally worth listening.
Please do “This Will Destroy You” . “A Three Legged Horse”. I’ve been listening since day one. You are fun to listen to and I enjoy watching you react and break down the music that I personally love. Keep up the great work!!
Check out "Euphoria - Silence in everywhere", "Mono - Pure As Snow", and/or "Hungry Ghosts - I Don't Think About You Anymore But, I Don't Think About You Anyless"

Yes my man! Nice to see you digging into the Mogwai, interested to see which ones you do next. My Father My King would be one to work up to.
finaly some post-rock, so glad you got here!
@@awave1 this was like 7 or8 years ago. they blew my mind defenetly one of the best concerts I've ever been too
I am totally digging this type of music, especially watching/ listening as I go to bed.
Wow, strong shoegaze influence on the vocal approach here. Interesting stuff! Reminds me to remind you of another shoegaze-adjacent band:
HUM. I’d love to hear what you hear in a song like “Afternoon With the Axolotls” and “Isle of the Cheetah.”
I love Hum. That entire album is wonderful
+10000 on those Hum suggestions. You’ll be blown away I guarantee.
I like this band. My fav is probably "I love you, I'm going to blow up your school"
Not sure if they are considered post rock as I'm no sub-genre expert, but two of my favorite instrumental bands that sound similar to this are Tristeza (album A Colores in particular) and Saxon Shore
Agreed. Excellent band
Mono - Pure As Snow
65daysofstatic - Radio Protector
Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand In Mine
I have used this song countless times to set the mood for people experiencing their first dimethyltryptamine encounter. It's interesting to see you react to this song as it has been such a mainstay in my life for 20 years 😋
love Mogwai, great video
Yes! Mogwai!
You have to do BRUIT - THE MACHINE IS BURNING LIVE(here on youtube)
Amazing band and song
This was my chillout song in my teens- thanks for doing it- love the channel!
I had the privilege of seeing 'Mono' perform in Australia about 10+ years ago...
If you could, listen to "You Are There" because it was absolutely mindblowing all those years ago and i still love them to this day
Talk Talk, anything off of Laughing Stock, the genesis of post rock.
I really enjoyed early Mogwai stuff. It is not the most complex music but it does evoke a nice soundscape to close your eyes to.
Loving the suggestions so far too.
Godspeed you! Black Emperor - Dead Flag Blues is a must.
Any track from We Lost the Sea's album 'Departure Songs' would be amazing.
So glad you are dipping into the world of post-rock and hopefully post-metal too.
The production on this album is stellar.
The Masters of texture ❤️
post-rock is a huge genre, and post-black-metal
I found Rave Tapes and loved Remurdered. Didn’t realize they were acclaimed otherwise.
Please listen to "auto rock" by mogwai.... Its a masterpiece
My favorite band. Great stuff
Opeth, A Fair Judgement 😜 👍
Two of my favorite Mogwai tracks:
Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home off Special Moves
How To Be A Warewolf off Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
great to see you tackle Mogwai, live they are a massive force! :-) and for some extra Mogwai flavour, Mogwai Fear Satan is a great track to showcase their heavier sound.
This is one of my 'had a bad day and gonna cry myself to sleep' songs.
Not a post rock suggestion but I'd love to see your take on brutus- 'war'.
Also thank you for doing a post rock week, its my favourite genre
if you think post-rock is "mellow" you need to listen to some Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I'd go with "Storm" to start out 👌
storm is a masterpiece
For more post-rock stuff, but mixed with metal - you should check out Sólstafir - Svartir Sandar. The lyrics are in Icelandic so you won't need to worry about them!
Kind of hard to imagine Mogwai have really loud live shows :)
if its layers you like. try Jakob from New Zealand,
brilliant drummer, brilliant band
I have always felt weight lift off my shoulders listening to this
Suggestions:
1. CAN (Tracks from: Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, or Future Days)
2. Talk Talk (any track off either albums: Laughing Stock or Spirit of Eden)
3. Dukes of the Stratosphear (My Love Explodes)
4. The Mars Volta (Roulette Dares or Take The Veil)
5. Jim James - Eternally Even (entire album would 🤯)
6. Pantera - You’ve Got to Belong To it
7. Aphex Twin
8. Patato Y Totico
🤟😎🍻
ARCHSPIRE - GOLDEN MOUTH OF RUIN
Technical death metal with Shotgun-style vocals, meaning scream-rapping
If you end up listening to more Mogwai at some point in the future I hope you react to songs from the Come On Die Young or Happy Songs For Happy People albums, one of my favorite bands of all time and its really great to see your reactions to this track
Mogwai are incredible, from Scotland as well!
Check out «Take Refuge» by Grails.
I hope Geebz finds This Will Destroy You and/or Caspian during his post-rock explorations. Those bands changed my life.
Mogwai is amazing
Love that you reacted to Mogwai!
Check out "Euphoria - Silence in everywhere", "Mono - Pure As Snow", and/or "Hungry Ghosts - I Don't Think About You Anymore But, I Don't Think About You Anyless"
