Mega Man X: Project Zero is a complete hack of Mega Man X that reworks much of the game’s graphics, gameplay, music, levels, and cutscenes to fully integrate Zero as the main character.
Gameplay notes:
Zero has a new set of physics as well as damage and ammunition values. He jumps somewhat higher than X and has shots that reach slightly higher. His level 4 buster can now penetrate shielded enemies such as Hoganmers and Mets. To compensate for having half as much weapon energy, his attacks deal slightly more damage across the board.
Roughly half of the stages were changed significantly. Slightly tougher enemy mobs are applied in several stages, as well as longer gaps to jump over. New energy pickups are granted to compensate for Zero’s ammunition costs. Some bosses have new attacks and Doppelgängers. Flame Mammoth’s stage no longer changes and Spark Mandrill’s sub-boss is more formidable.
The player can exit from every Maverick stage without finishing the level first. They can also exit from the fortress stages at any time.

Central Highway’s music is replaced by Zero’s theme.
Sigma’s 4th fortress level plays Variable X.

Graphical notes:
The canon Zero sprites of the time are applied.
The UI is reworked. There is now a Zero-branded title screen, stage select icon, get weapon portrait, buster weapon, and extra life icon. There is also a Zero series-style pause screen icon.
Cutscene graphics are heavily reworked. For example, Dr. Wily replaces Dr. Light in the capsules, a shadowed Zero stands on the cliffside in the ending, and Mega Man X appears in the cast roll.

The intro is replaced and given a red font colour.
Events are reworked overall to fit Zero as the main character. Zero has more dialogue than X did in the original game, and there is a new epilogue.
The Homing Torpedo typo from the original game is fixed.

Even in a ROM hack, Zero doesn't know what he's fighting forrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrahhhh.
Missed opportunity from the mod's creator to squeeze in the word "Bassnium" at the intro.
I think Bass Buster Mark 3 would also be good to have, as a counterpart to Mega Buster Mark 17, due to Bass first having a charging Buster like Mega Man, then a rapid-fire one afterward. If you wanna count the first Super Adaptor upgrade from Mega Man 7, and the second from Mega Man 8, you could then say Bass Buster Mark 5.

I thought that Zero was powered by a refined version of Bassnium called Zeronium?
@@landonschlemmer2424 All we know is that Wily himself stated in "Power Fighters" that he'll use Bassnium to create a robot stronger than Bass, and then he shows the silhouette of Zero.
This seriously makes me want to play X all over again. His sprite work is perfect to his original x1 design, not just a swap from X2 or X3.
Took close to 30 yrs for this mod to happen but better late than never.
Dr Wily being inside the light capsules is the most funniest but accurate thing to ever see
Its pretty cool to see these little changes, but more importantly getting the sprite artworks just right. The story changes were cool with vile at the last cutscene.
About time a Zero romhack for X1 shows much more detail on Zero's sprites.
Zero’s level 2 charge shot broke an arm off of Vile’s Goliath armor, it should have its damage increased. Would have loved to have seen more unique offense or even the X3 projectile system instead of using X’s entire combat system.

I've always liked to imagine that RT-55J's two nipple-like lights are eyes, and the white belt around its waist is an exposed row of upper teeth.
it says "roughly half the stages were changed significantly" but watching thru this other than some enemies seeming tougher there seem to be no "significant" changes to the stages...
Ese era la idea original de Keiji Inafune, pues diseñó a Zero para que sea el protagonista, pero al ver que los fans de Megaman no se iban a sentir familiarizados con el personaje decidió crear a X y para no descartar a Zero, lo hizo un personajr secundario y el compañero de X, a partir de entonces Inafune le tomó mucho cariño a Zero, tanto que no permitia a Capcom rediseñarlo, y siempre estaba al pendiente de ello
i like how bosses may have a secondary weakness, like using the Boomerang Cutter on the octopus and elephant, breaks parts off making them less dangerous.
as i recall one of the powers actually removed the armadillos armor. making it much easier.
53:51 if you have the chameleon ultimate, you can use the wall on the right as a small short cut. with proper jump control.
it makes you immune to almost everything.
this is the spark mandrill power to remove the armor but completely agree with you, so nostalgic
Yeah, spark mandrill's electric spark is what knocks the armor off armadillo but it's also his primary weakness. It makes it so he can be hit when bouncing off the walls spun up in a ball stops him from deflecting shots when not firing himself (100x easier). I mix my play orders up all the time and part of it is so I can use the boomerang cutter on Flame Mammoth to chop his nose off (can't use it to roar and change the conveyor belt direction or spit his oil attack) and Launch Octopus's arms so he can't do that annoying vortex tunnel he's invincible during that pulls you in. Also can get arm upgrade sooner and use it on shotgun ice to ride to a spot you can jump up to the heart before getting the boomerang to avoid playing it twice. I love the 3 SNES X games and this is so refreshing to see new content on a game I've beaten easily over 100 times. Not as cool, but in X2 if you defeat wire sponge using his weakness their shadow slowly slices in half like an old samurai anime

Also programmers of this hack, nice touch making it so that X didn’t actually die, like Zero did in X1. It’s better than just a complete reversal of roles, so great job!
Five or six year-old me prayed that there was a secret mode where this was possible. And now that big “what if” scenario has come to light.

What I like the most about this hack is that they used megaman x zero model and not the megaman x3 model.
The x model of zero is simple but the fact they used it blend perfect with megaman x, you can’t even tell is a mod
Fits lore wise too. Iirc, X5 has zero virus sprites with both rounded and square shoulders, seemingly acknowledging that it was a difference in the body provided by the X hunters

@@Potpie_king For me it wasn't a guide, I was tired of using the charge shot and just randomly used ever weapon on Vanguard. 😂 It was an accidental discovery on my part. When I did look up a guide I found out that rolling shield was the final bosses weakness and I thought I had to keep using the charge shot at full power at first.
i like how the wily pods are written in such a way that it can be interpratated as both wily being the jealous prick wanting to destroy something (X) he is or as wily trying to stop a greater evil

I liked the sprites for Zero, but Zero is not Zero without the powerfull 2 blasts and his almigthy sabre impact.
I have had an idea for a while. For Capcom to make a “Zero Gaiden” for X1. Using the original sprites, it would explain what Zero was doing while X was having his first game. It would have its own story, its own bosses, and the final boss would be different, with Vile being a cutscene. The bosses would be berserk Mechaniloids rather than Reploids and there wouldn’t be an upgrade system, he’d just be as strong as he seems in the original X1. Is this a good idea? Should we start a petition? Please tell me.
Really though, I think it’s a great idea, and Capcom should do it. They’re almost certainly not going to acknowledge one email from some autistic femboy in Melbourne, so who’s with me?
Also I forgot to mention, one of my ideas for this is that Zero would get techniques instead of weapons. For instance, he could get Bass’s Sonic Crusher and Booster Kick, among other things, as a callback! Sound good?
Hear the Zero theme for that long in the intro stage would get old real, real fast. Some tracks only work because of how quickly they dissappear.
This is amazing. I have a vivid memory engrained in my psyche of a rented MMX cartridge that glitched out one day way back when and after dying as X somewhere I dont recall. The game auto-continued and spawns Zero in on Boomer Kwanger's stage. The game let us move around as Zero but wouldn't follow him up the ladders so we ultimately had to restart to keep playing. My brother nor my cousin recall this but it's like a core memory for me.

Had something similar happen in Soul Caliber... 2? I selected nightmare but it spawned me in with night terror and the controls were absolutely borked, wouldn't even move right.
That's before I knew he was even in the game beyond a cutscene, and only vaguely remember fighting against him once.
But false memory is also an absolute B, might not have even been something you could fight against. I just remember seeing night terror in a cutscene a week later and it clicked.
I too have also had vivid dreams of this game, such as there being a secret passage above the heart tank in Boomer Kuwanger's stage, if you can find a way to go around the far ledge and up.
Is this going to be hardware compatible and more importantly will it support the SA-1 patch that exists for Mega Man X to keep the framerate at 60fps at all times
Only thing is it possible to change the part in the beginning when x shows up to give him the original opening stage theme? This should be apart of the Legacy collection so fire 🔥🔥🔥

When I wanted to play as Zero as a kid, it wasn't so X could save me from Vile. Zero's the one whose buster is strong enough to damage him. Switching it like this just feels like a tease.
I got this game way back in 1994. Played the hell out of it, found every power up, and to this day still wonder what the hell a “Kwanger” is.
Doesn't seem like the patch works, I've patched multiple versions of MMX and they all fail to load in SNES9x.

That Zero theme needs to be swapped out in the first level, it’s way too short of a track to be looped that many times on a single level

@@mariopadilla1445 I wouldn't care if people mod stuff I made decades ago. I wasn't just referring to mega man games. Mario games are huge with romhacks. Also, other companies could also try to profit from mods to their games but it's probably hard to pull of and eventually not worth the investment.

It's easy to figure out what Sigma wanted to say. Now, he knows that Zero is Dr. Wily's final project, and also, he is destined to destroy X and mankind, as the Ultimate Maverick he was designed for, unless, he's is stopped... Somehow...

Ah, nice. The version I downloaded didn't change the capsules to Wily. That was odd to see.
They should give Zero in this Hack his own Skills when you fight him as a boss in Maverick Hunter X he uses a Fire Kick instead ice Shot he could get his ice Rush from x5 , ground smash some weapons could remain the Same but instead of hadouken he should get his Z-Saber ( Saber Beam) since Willy Designed it for him in x2

Looks great: zeros helmet should flash when he powers up and his max hit should be a 1KO blue bolt. That would be sweet :) oh yeah and make his dash a lot longer.

Was chill penguin bugged? He never made any statues. Also why is zero gaining the special guns? Thats never been one of his abilities. And flame mammoths level and oil. Why make these weird little changes to the game?
They should of kept it still zero saving x and especially have the ending that zero sacrifice himself to save x before sigma fortress exploded
