I recently discovered this game late last year. It is a wonderful experience. My advice, play this game with headphones on. The ambient music and directional sound are a huge part of the experience. Also, wear a sweater. This game makes you physically cold. (edit) I guess I should add, this game isn't for everyone. It's for people who enjoy hiking or similar activities. I wouldn't describe it as "fun," but rather "cathartic." It's suitable for mature players (in the literal, non-ESRB, sense), not for those looking for a quick hack n' slash/shoot'em up, instant gratification type adventure. This game is about patience, planning, and existential dread. You won't find a semi-automatic rifle to mow down wolves, and you won't level up to a point where you can instantly kill them in hand-to-hand combat. But, if you can take the time to stock up on supplies, mend your clothes, and summit Timberwolf mountain, or unlock the ammo bench, you will feel a sense of actual accomplishment, not the fleeting sense of accomplishment you get from a scripted adventure that 90% of players will complete. The practice of long-term planning, delayed gratification, and one-day-at-a-time gameplay translate to the real world very well. I honestly believe playing this game can make you a better person.
Been replaying minecraft because ive been wanting a game with survival mechanics and just busy work. Saw this and give it a chance. I have to say it really does give off a sense of dread of whether or not youll make it through the night. First playthrough i died within 14 hours. Second playthrough i gathered most material to make a fire, found food and a revolver with ammo. Things were looking up until a blizzard came, blew away my fire, ran out of food. Towards the end, i was left standing in front of a deer with gun in hand with little health. Couldnt manage to aim correctly because of frostbite and was sleep deprived. I pulled the trigger only to realize i hadnt loaded the gun. I chuckled at the situation and my character died. Its amazing what this game puts you through. And that was only my second playthough. Reminds me of Where the water tastes like wine. At least the feeling of it.
So this game was in development for a long time and got a ton of updates based on players feedback for a long time so it is actually really mature and not just a quick and dirty indie game so to speak of. Also it's a singleplayer game as far as I know and a damn realistic one as well when it comes to the weather and you easily get cold really fast without proper cloths and so on. And yeah wild animals are just that wild so they aren't easy to exploit or trick so that you can kill them quickly. It's a harsh world and your only way to surivive is to fight not just against animals but nature itself. Good luck, you'll need it ;)
I find the animals not very realistic at all.. They wander aimlessly, rabbits obliviously walk up to me and forget I exist within two seconds of fleeing. Wolves often instantly do a 180 turn on the spot making passing them a complete nightmare that takes far too long. Deer don't respond to being shot at all nor die instantly if shot in the head or the heart, I once wasted three bullets on a single deer because I thought the shots didn't register, it didn't react to the impact or even make a noise, only for me to give up because a storm was coming in fast and later find that same deer dead and frozen solid right behind the cabin I stayed in, but the game is too set to shooting a deer and hunting it down no matter where it was shot or how many times it was hit, only one bullet was necessary and were always going to be forced to chase it down. The animal AI suck but everything else is pretty good, it's still very much worth a buy if you love tough survival games.
@@nathanlawwill Do you know how long this has been in development? After all these years the animal AI should have been improved at least a little by now, the story mode still isn't even finished yet and they're porting it to Switch, which is about halfway through its life cycle by now. I do like this game but holy crap are they slow with it all.
@@nathanlawwill There's a difference between rushing out a game and just finishing a game. I've owned this for about two years and they've only released one episode since, and the story isn't even deep or thought provoking. It's pretty simple, not a bad story so far but it really shouldn't take that long to write.
@The Doesnt Know It All In regards to animal AI; I did like that the wolves wouldn't simply b-line to you, but would sorta stalk you and wait for an opportunity to attack. That being said; That's far from realistic, as most wolves (and animals in general) tend to leave you alone. Animals will get curious, and you may even end up with a bear inside your camp if you're not properly disposing of your food waste, but (for the most part) animals aren't gonna chase you down just cause they see you out n' about in the wild, unless they're desperate for food or trying to protect their cubs/dens.
This game is amazing. Played it a few years ago on PC and loved it, might pick it up for Switch.. The perfect game to play handheld in bed on a cold winter night.
Me and my dad have been playing this game from the start. Its amazing to see that they have ported it to the switch, even when they at first weren't confident in doing so. Some of the best developers of any game I have come across. Thank you so much hinterland 😊
Oh my god, I’ve got like 300 hours in this game and never seen this trailer. I almost cried watching back all my struggles and hopes play out infront of me

this game and I go way back. I have known about since 2014 when i was in my fourth year of primary school (fourth grade for you yanks) and I nearly fainted when i saw this trailer. LETS HEAR IT FOR SQUIDDY AND HINTERLAND
I've been playing this game since it was in Alpha. I have sunk more hours than I want to count into playtime. I absolutely love it. I'm so impressed with how far it has come since it was just a sandbox survival game. It's so good. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys survival games or who enjoys a slower-paced game experience.
It's pretty good. The graphics are expectedly downgraded from the PC version but not unacceptably so. The only serious framerate drops were in the plane-crash sequence at the beginning of "Wintermute", probably because of all the fires. The ability to play this game in the same room where I'm watching my kid, and to put it down every few minutes, and to play it in bed before I fall asleep, is absolutely worth it in my opinion. I was so looking forward to this release, even though I wasn't sure if it would ever come.
omg this was one of my fav games on pc but def thought the switch would be a better port bc just imagine playing it in bed while it's snowing outside!! definitely worth it and it's super realistic that actually made me anxious to not die while playing lol. i loved it on pc
I was so amazed that when there was the free trial for the demo of the duration of 2 hours I couldn't wait to play it. I played this game for 2 and a half year and I stopped playing it this August but I think I'll return to play it soon. So I think it's worth it to buy it. P.S. Sorry for my English
So this is the first time I've seen this game. My question is, has this game existed on other platforms before? If it has and you've played it, could you tell me your personal take on the game?
There's difficulty settings for everyone to enjoy. The devs are some of the most transparent and genuine folks out there. Atmospheric like no other, makes you feel cold in the hottest summer. Episodic story that's still being continued, 3/5 currently. Survival mode can be as relaxing or hardcore as you want it to be. Great game, worth every penny.
Ninja_ _Sensei It’s atmospheric and immersive. The story is enjoyable. The entire survival system is incredible. It’s visually stunning. The map is awesome. It can be unforgiving on the difficult modes. Hope this helps!
Confused. Are the graphics from 0:05 - 0:37 the same game in engine? They look so much better it feels like a blend from a prerecorded cinematic gradually fading into something else. It leaves me not clear on how this game actually looks.
While I will say the game's art style isn't hurt as much as some other games that were ported to Switch, if you can get it on PC or Playstation, you'll be getting a much prettier game.
Sooo. Is this game worth it? I don't mean "yeah after you play like 50 hours of it you really start to like it" worth it but like "yeah this is a great time early on and it stays that for a good while" kind of worth it
I dont think the song plays while you're playing the game but in case you would like to listen to the song, it's called "Tall Tall Shadow" by Basia Bulat
