    I bought the 15 liter green one last year because I swim in boat infested open waters where a fellow triathlete got ran over the previous year. It's 90% safety and 10% functionality. I hate leaving my car keys on the beach when I'm in the water. Super handy!! Great video! You probably just saved a few lives with this one. Keep up the great work!!

    I remember when i wanted to do triathlon for the first time in my life and coudln't swim even 10 meters at the age of 21 so i watched swim tip RUclips videos for weeks and read alot about swimming and even bought a book! i had just enough money to go the pool to train my technique but never could do it right alone! it was very difficult but i kept trying and after 4 months of doing it step by step drill by drill i was not bad at the end i felt safe in the pool so i had to test myself in open water... i asked a friend if i can borrow his wetsuit and went to the lake next to my home which is about 1 km long. it was around 8 in the evening and already getting dark, there was nobody around in case something happend, it became even windy and start rainning a bit. i had my wetsuit on and i was nervous and thought to myself "why i am scared? it's normal to be scared, what do i prefer going back home watching series on netflix and be scared of open water for the rest of mylife? i ll have to do it anyway in the future! and if i die at least i died doing something i wanted to do "so i jumped in the water i was so confident just by having this conversation with myself i didnt even feel scared anymore! it was raining and windy and the water was moving and it was dark and quite (nobody around) but it was the most beautiful experience i 've ever had! i swam 2km alone for the first time and went back home proud as fk and kept doing it all whole summer until i did my first triathlon in just 2 months of training it was olympic distance sprint triathlon (1/8), i raced with a racing bike older than my father and i was able to finish the race number 198 out of 453 in 1hour 21min. most important tip is you have to know how to controle your breath! it is the first skill i learned so that you dont run out of stamina.

    Thank you for starting using a buoy! It sets a good example for other athletes. It is not about confidence, but really is a safety device that may save your life. At my local beach, they don't let you swim without one. You never know when you might 4 limbs cramp and drown! Safety first.

      I can confidentiality say a floaty is essential for open water swims. No boater is going to see you in a black wetsuit. No person is likely going to see you fighting for dear life as you drown. But with a colorful buoy you stand a chance. It doesn't matter how good of a swimmer you think you are. All it takes is one breath of water to drown. I was once in the middle of a lake and realized I was way too gassed. I simply grabbed this buoy from behind me, held on and slowly kicked my way to safety.

      A friend of my family drowned in a lake probably because of a cramp. I want to start swimming in the sea and I'm confident but started searching for something that float like a dry bag that I could bring and found out there is already a specialized version for swimmer!

      I am curious..if i tie it on my waist and just lay flat , my face on the water, will it let me float just float?

    Glad to see you onboard Taren, they are widely used here in Florida where there are so many boats and jet skies. If they were allowed in races I think you would see more weak swimmers (like me) trying Olympic and Half distances. I heard of 2 drownings in a triathlon recently, in a big crowd it may take too long for a rescue boat to get to some one in trouble.

    we always use them on our OWS, even in groups. I have this exact brand (the big one), and I love it. Really good for when panic sets in, and you can just kinda hang out. Taking off from it is kind of wonky, but that just takes practice. In a race, they're not really needed (I did use one for my first super sprint race because I wasn't confident), since you'll have boat support all around you. Can't recommend these enough!!

  • @franhiatt1
    @franhiatt1 3 года назад +3

    Hi, I bought one of these recently and they're great, but with one worrying flaw. If your're swimming fairly fast and the waist strap isn't really tight it can slip down over your hips and your legs and restricts movement in your legs and/or ankles. In deep water this can be very scary indeed. Ideally the strap should be modified so that as well as the waist strap it also has an extra one which is attached to the back of the waist strap and passes in between your legs to fastens to the front of the waist strap. Until I can make one myself, I've put a loop on the waist of my swimming shorts to pass the waist strap through so it won't slip down again (unless my shorts come off).

    Swim buoys are actually mandatory for most of the swims I do with my club down here in Florida. Where most are in Open Water the chances of being hit by a boat or a crazy tourist on a jet ski are very real. I've had several close calls and probably sport my humongous swim buoy. It gets a little interesting when the wave start ripping and the buoy comes up next to you but I don't mind all of the name of safety.

    Use a similar product from a company called Swim Secure (European) for three years now (it comes in different shapes with and without dry bag compartments). It was really helpful in developing open water swim confidence for myself. I like the idea of a flashing beacon and will have to see if I can come up with a hack for mine.

    Thanks for the review! With the COVID-19, all the public and private swimming pools are closed; and it looks like they'll be closed throughout the summer. My only option is to swim in the lake; and I'm not a confident open water swimmer especially when I don't have anyone to swim with. I've been thinking that a swim buoy might help and your video helped him make a decision.

    Seriously, though, a friend of mine got hit by a boat rotor and his knee was flayed open down to the bones. He almost lost the leg. If there are motorized boats about, this helps them see you better. But it should be just like when you're out on the road in that YOU need to be aware of your surroundings, too.

    Hey Taren! I have a question; is this buoy allowed to use in an ironman or normal league triathlon swim? I ask it because i live in a city without a sea or ocean and i only train in a pool. So i have a fear of the open waters. I am thinking about using one of these durng an ironman.
    Thanks for all mate! Loves!

    I use one also, love it. I do worry what if it deflates while swimming. What are your thoughts about using a lifeguard buoy like the one they use on a beach?

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  6 лет назад

      The odds of it deflating while swimming are slim to none. And even if it did, if you're out on an open water swim, you should be able to swim back to shore without it. Lifeguard buoys aren't meant for that purpose, no.

    I use swim buoy for long swims. I prefer the ones with built in bladder pack which I use for water bottle and snacks. Sometimes I put in my mobile phone so my wife can track via an app how far am I. So she knows that I am ok and also knows when to come and get me after I have finished the swim.

    6:20 I do not know about "find my phone" mode, but the Glympse app (free) is pretty good for sharing your location. It sends a text to people you select, who then have the option to click a link and track you in their maps app for a specified period of time (as a blue dot with speed with a 20 second or so delay).

    • @luckybastardshawaii2834

      @@rachelamundsen8265 When you snorkel you’re able to stay on the surface (float) and breathe at the same time for long periods so I don’t think it would be particularly beneficial.

    Hi Taren, you can put the yellow swim buoy in a plastic water bottle (needs a big cap) and put it on your Tri- or Road Race bike, ride to a lake in a trisuit and swim having your phone, cash and keys with you. So doing two sports and be safe not getting anything stolen...

  • @G1yndyfrdwy

    I discovered yesterday that they have a limitation in use. I swam 4 miles on a lake with the wind behind me. The strength of the wind increased and eventually picked the float up and it went ahead of me. It was attached around my waist and then started interfering with my stroke, it was very disruptive actually, and I took it off. I was only able to remove it because I had a safety boat with me. Shame my safety didn't video it or me....

    I think you just tested that buoy in swimming POOL, but not in open waters, OR they paid you very good money for promo.
    Yesterday evening, few nours after i've seen your video, i was out to the local lake ("Mihailest" artificial lake on Arges river) to test the 20liters version of buoy.
    This accesory in A GARBAGE in REAL condition as follows:
    In open waters sometimes you will get WIND from 20 to 40kmh (as was last evening), then when wing direction is from the side, your direction will be affected, also your hand will touch the cord of buoy at each stroke. When wing direction is directly against your direction.. hour speed will be CUT IN HALF, i mean instead of 1minute for 100m, you will have at best 1:50 for 100m with bigger effort (i did 7km in 2.5 hours with some effort and without any pause for filming and photos as i do usualy)
    Then the buoy position will AFFECT your swim movement in a way or other, as you cannot position to stand still and not interfere with your kick or your stroke (if you pull goes until over hips, as it should)

    If I've got a floaty in tow most other people on the water will leave you alone. If I'm swimming without it I get followed and harassed. Most people thinking I'm crazy to be swimming in open water. Oil tankers and container ships give you the right of way. 🇨🇦🤠
