    This post was published a few years ago by you, Joni, but I was struck by your comment "when we all do our little tiny things all together, it adds up to big things". You are an incentive to all of us, and that's part of the picture too. Thank you!

    Have you thought of using a salad spinner to get the excess water out. It's great fun!

    I live in an apartment, but it has no laundry room or w/d connections. Often, I wash clothes in a portable machine that I put in the kitchen sink. Then, I hang clothes over the shower rod, or outside on the upper landing railing. I only go to the laundry room occasionally.

    Hi Joanie, I'm right there with you in thinking that spending a little time washing the old fashioned way is a good thing. When I was little (wringer washer days) we started out washing a load of the least dirty items, ran it through the wringer into the rinse water, back through the wringer and then hung out to dry. Then, using the same water -both for wash and rinse, we repeated the process graduating to our most dirty clothes for the last load. Our clothes were clean, we used very little water and almost no electricity and it worked! I haven't had a clothesline in decades now, but sometimes I miss it.

      Metal tableware isn't ecologically clean either. Redemption arrives in the form of reuse. But I've used a set of quality plasticware for over a year with very little breakage.

    Hand washing in the sink would be a lot less work and if the sink is to small use a bucket or storage box, start with your whites then lights, colours the darks, this way the colour doesn’t run and make your whites grey. If I need to hand wash I throw a few things in at a time and It’s like needing bread I guess, the wet material traps the air and that helps to get your clothes clean, it’s much less work the what you did and works great

    (Oops, sent too soon) ...I’m not sure if the scrubba bag uses less water than a front load washer? Personally I find van installed sinks, plumbing and water pumps to be a huge waste of space, water and electricity. A collapsible basin under a gravity feed water container works great. It might be something you’d like. There’s a vanner hack of washing clothes in a sealed flat container of water & a little detergent while driving to allow the motion of the vehicle agitate the laundry while in transit. Thanks for sharing your method! Safe travels.

      I love my indoor plumbing. It is not a waste for me at all. But everyone gets to do this their way and my way doesn't work for everyone.

    That's brilliant! I'm totally with you on the hankies and paper towels and so on. That stuff is so unnecessary. Good for you - a lot of times van dwellers really ramp up their use of disposables in order to not have to wash dishes but long term, I think the production of those disposables uses more water and recycling them does too. I found your channel through Seven Grey and am glad to have done so. Thanks for the information.

    I think that I like this way of doing laundry better! I flew to Idaho to pick up my "new to me" RV van camper on 03/04/18. I have had to stay in a hotel two nights so far. Enjoyed your video and really like your van design. I suggest installing eye hooks in your rear doors to string a clothes line; clothes will dry faster and not add humidity to your van interior. A front loading washer uses 13 gal / 8lbs of laundry

    This is the 3rd of your videos I have watched after finding you on RUclips. I Immensely appreciate your descriptive candor.
    While I have a tiny electric washing machine that uses 5 gl of water. I see a huge advantage of this bag. That being what you showed in the video of taking special care of certain items. As well as storage space is far less than any hard machine system.
    I have a long time ago moved away from heavy materials for poly and other synthetics. Without debating their production impact I have to tout their maintenance impact on my life has been wonderfully minimal, simplistic, and easy. As well as their endurance and coolness.
    I am currently homeless due to flood. Instead of moving back into a wooden prison I am planning to go mobile. So I will probably leave the washing machine behind and get one of these bags.

    Cute little gadget.
    I've found that a 5gl bucket with a tight lid does a great job, with less work.
    Add water, soap & clothes. (Even jeans) Put lid on tight & set it in the back.
    By the time I run my errands, clothes are about as clean as they're gonna get.
    Rinse well in clean water & hang am out to dry.
    On days I don't have to drive anywhere, I just hand wash in same bucket. Rinse & hang. Been doing it for years.
    If you keep an eye out for it, you can get the bucket for free.
    P.S.
    LOVE your van!!!

    Congrats on your 6th month vanniversary! Thanks for the review on doing laundry. It really came in handy on deciding how I will be doing mine! I have heard of people getting the tall Rubbermaid storage plastic containers, putting in water and biodegradable soap just enough to cover the amount clothes. They secure it with a closed lid and tied down, then drive for an hour. Take clothes out, get rid of water and fill up with more water to rinse, drive for one hour. When they get to where they are going, they can do a final rinse if necessary, wring out clothes and dry them. Thought this approach was pretty clever and then adding this product when stationary would probably get the job done for me. Thanks!

    I've hand washed tons of my own clothes before, but never in a bag. That looks like it could cut down on the work a bit and be easier on the clothing. When I lived in Poland we had very old washer and an even older squeezer thingy. (sorry lack of word there) turn it on and put the clothing between two rollers which squeeze the water out and then hang them in the flat or on the balcony. Most people did it on the balcony and no one was embarressed about it.

    Excellent video, Joanie, thank you! Do you find that you’re dressing differently as a nomad? I’m trying to anticipate how this type of lifestyle change might effect my wardrobe as I am going through a minimizing phase now. Like most women, I had WAY too much clothing, jewelry and footwear. I’ve had closets bigger than my van! lol. Is there any particular type of clothing that you prefer for van life? As a massage therapist, I pretty much live in scrubs and leggings while stubbornly hanging on to a few dresses, dress jackets and heels. Dry clean only items were among the first to go!

    • @TheGalavan
      @TheGalavan  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I do dress differently on the road. I've stubbornly hung onto a few jeans, but I prefer my quick-dry pants.
      I Konmaried my closet about a year before, but I find that I don't need as many winter items (still need a few though - that's a mistake a lot of people make!).
      I wear my clothes at least three days, up to five before washing, so I keep reducing.

  • @campingboy9213
    @campingboy9213 6 лет назад

    I'm not sure I see the advantage of this over hand washing. Apparently it does not wash as good as a machine since you still hand washed them.
    On a travel day I could see some use. Fill the bag with water, soap, cloths and close it up. Place it in the sink and drive. The long soak and movement of the car should do a good wash.

    • @TheGalavan
      @TheGalavan  6 лет назад

      It did better than a machine. The items I had to rinse extra are way cleaner after the Scrubba than after a machine wash.
      Part of how it works is scrubbing the clothes on the washboard inside, although the soak might be a good idea.

    You made me laugh a few times in this one. I have used a Wonderwash for many, many years (15+) and hope to be able to find space for it in my van. I know my electric spin dryer won't fit so I will have to go back to hand wringing. I agree with your thoughts on the waste involved with laundromats and washing machines. Water usage is a big issue in vanlife. I would like to figure a way to get some while out boondocking. A simple filter and creek water perhaps? I'd like to figure out a simple way to collect rainwater too. I'm thinking a tarp setup with a bucket. Anyway, two great videos, you have a new subscriber. :-)

      Thanks and welcome. Personally, I have a huge tank and use very little water. It turns out I use just over 10-gallons/week. And my groceries don't last more than two weeks, so I'm set. I don't know if that would work for you.

    • @Javaman92
      @Javaman92 6 лет назад

      That is good to know. The Wonderwash uses several gallons to do a load, which is about half a full machine load. I was thinking about it earlier and I could just do it where there was water available. Thanks, this info gives me a beginning guideline to go with.

      I tried calling doTERRA, thinking that it would be best to go directly to the source. The number you gave didn't answer, but I found their main number (800-411-8151) on their website. After a frustrating 10-minute call with the very pleasant (but ultimately unhelpful) customer service guy, I gave up. He couldn't understand why the website wasn't working either.
      Their laundry detergent is probably a great product, but at $35 + shipping and the uncertainty of whether I would even like it, I decided not to go ahead.
      Thanks very much for your reply. I really enjoy your videos and your thoughtful, laid back approach to living mobile.

      Oh man - I'm so sorry for the typo and for the runaround! Thanks for your kind words. I'll dig into why the site isn't working. Thanks for letting me know.

    Can you put a link for the laundry soap?

    • @TheGalavan
      @TheGalavan  6 лет назад

      Oh yeah - I forgot to do that. You can go to mydoterra.com/joni and then use the search function "laundry". You do need to set up an account, but it's not a big deal.
      I'm sure you'll enjoy it! You only use a half a cap for a full washer so a little goes a really long way!

    Looks pretty silly. The bucket and plunger method would be easier than this.

      As I mentioned in the video - it's not for everyone. I don't want to make room for a bucket. Works for me. YMMV
