I have the game but never tried multiplayer. Is it worth starting PvP in 2021? Are the lobbies still active?

If you're lucky, you can find one or two lobbies (almost exclusively unlimited Battle Royale) and from there you either get absolutely annihilated by people with 2 years of multiplayer experience or use something broken, like SASMs or QAAMs to hopefully do something good. Or, if you're actually good at piloting and can read enemies easily, you can try taking them down with more conventional weaponry, like HPAAs.
Bottom line is, there are snipptets of activity, but they're scarce and lobbies are usually populated by old-timers. It is fun, though (and if you play on Steam, I wouldn't mind flying with you!)

You can definitely run it smoothly on a current “average” gaming laptop. I got myself a 1650 gtx with the ryzen 5600h and it runs AC7 max graphics no problem 👍
