That is a lesson that Ive learned for sure. When I worked in the salon they would give us spare Lindsey heads to practice ear piercing on. This was well over a decade after her retirement so I find the whole situation surprising.

I run the r/americangirl subreddit and I've been searching for what feels like forever trying to gather these negative experiences to put them all into one place but I've not been very successful. I cannot believe just how much they are NOT transparent with anything. Like, they should have made you well aware before you sent off the doll that you would not be able to get the same doll in return. Imagine if this was a child!!!!! Imagine if this was someone's childhood doll!! And yet, SO many people are completely unaware that the doll hospital will do shit like this. I can't believe you were that calm about it, if this happened to me I'd be PISSED, and the fact that they'll make YOU send YOUR doll back when THEY are the ones who decided to change it in the first place just makes it even worse. I sent my Lindsey to the doll hospital circa 2012/2013. Head replacements were available, so I wanted that and a limb replacement, because her limbs were loose. I wrote in the little box on the form where you could leave additional comments that I really wanted her torso to be preserved, because it was a Pleasant Company torso with a flat neckline, not the wrinkled mattel neckline. My comment was COMPLETELY ignored, they gave me a completely new doll, it was a completely new torso and a completely new head. Thankfully I wasn't too upset, but it was very obvious that they had completely ignored my "additional comments" and just done as they see fit. I am not alone in this, and neither are you. The doll hospital is a warranty replacement center, NOT a restoration or doll fixing center. They will "fix" your doll but only by replacing parts. SO SO SO many people don't know this, send in their childhood doll they're really attached to in some way, and then get disappointed when the doll comes back with a different smell, or a face that's different, etc. Unfortunately AG markets it as any doll can go and get services, when in fact some dolls can't get certain services, and they don't care if they're replacing a nostalgic part of your doll. I also absolutely love that you love Lindsey so much! Most people seem to completely write her off but she's always been my favorite too.
@@TheAGcollector101 Totally agree, there needs to be some distinction at the doll hospital drop off inside the store locations. It’s absurd to not have some type of option for individuals who actually need some type of repair, especially since the dolls don’t technically come with a warranty. If it is a warranty replacement center, then they should be vocalizing that via print with each doll. Warranties would cost them quite a bit I feel like. Especially since the hospital is such a money pit honestly haha
aww that sucks! Yes, Ag doesn't supply a lot of the older dolls parts anymore I believe #4 isn't available anymore either. I would recommend calling the doll hospital directly before sending off any other older dolls. As a former AG employee, I would always try to warn people before sending their dolls to the hospital. Most of them didn't care as they were not collectors lol You handled it a lot better than I would. I would be very annoyed at a #23 in stead of lindsey. 🤣Regardless I hope your niece enjoys her!
She was more into the Belle doll I made for her after the mishap 💗I’m surprisd that I didnt cry haha💗 I most certainly will call before next time! I appreciate the suggestion.
I would be a bit upset if I sent in my GOTY and got a TM. A good condition TM 23 would've probably been around the same price as sending her to the doll hospital. As it's a gift, and she still such a pretty doll, I'm sure that your niece will love her though!
I hate that they do this. I sent my Marisol in and I had to attach a note so they wouldn’t replace her with different parts. Thankfully they just refunded my money and gave Marisol a free spa day. But strangely when I called, they said they have replacement parts for Kailey. I’m gonna attach the same note though just in case. Don’t take the AG customer service at their word. I sent my Kailey in cause they told me vinyl discoloration was covered but they called me and wanted me to pay $80 when they already had my doll. I said no thanks please just send her back to me…the hospital apologized profusely for the lack of communication between the doll hospital and customer service.
Omg the SAME thing happened with my Nellie!! She was like fully peach for some reason. Then when they shipped her back……she got sent to the wrong address and was in limbo for months . 🙃
Lindsey is such a unique doll - they never made another doll with that same iconic wig. Replacing her with any other more current doll just wouldn't be the same. Thanks for letting us all know - glad she's going to a lovely home in your niece!
Awe thank you! I last minute turned a Disney Ily into a giant belle doll and made a gown and such. She was more into that doll than the AG, but she is still super attached to her Kit that i gave her for her birthday a few months back. So we’ll see if she takes a liking to 23.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the AG doll hospital. Makes me hesitant to send in any of ours in the future. If it were our AG doll, I would have liked if they would have contacted me first to ask if I'd prefer the doll back in the condition it came in or with a new head.
They are normally fantastic! I believe they may have tried while I was out of the country without service. There were two messages when I got back so that’s when I called to find out she was on her way already. They probably wanted to make sure she made it before Christmas. I believe you should be fine in the future, just be careful if your doll is retired! 💗

I only sent a Kirsten doll into the hospital when her hair was falling out and she was a Pleasant Co doll and it was still owned by Pleasant Co so I am no help there. I would not send mine in. I would take mine to a doll repair person and just have the wig matched as best as they can and replace that. The doll repair person can tighten the limbs too. xoxox
I think that considering she's a gift, I'm sure your niece will appreciate having the new vinyl parts, hair, and eyes. It's great that they did keep her original tag and whatnot so she still has some of the spirit of the original. Her new face is very cute. I'm certain that if you mention no issue, your niece will fully enjoy the remade doll. Hey, you can also request the original parts back if you'd like to send her to another restorer.

I got a new #4 head in 2019, I'm glad I did before they stopped! She's so cute and her hair is so soft and pretty
