I had to get rid of all my roses last fall due to an upcoming cross-country move. Watching this is is making me nostalgic about a John Cabot Rambler that I had... Pink with yellow centers and the canes were about 12/13 ft tall...so gorgeous. They are all in a good home now.🌺🌺🌺
@@SleepyKittens hmmm I DN get those beetles but I had to spray with soap and water once in a while for a small caterpillar like bug that attacked new buds
Thank you. We’ve lost many grafted roses over the years despite burying the graft union until we picked hardier varieties for our growing zone and then their own roots were unfazed by the cold, with proper mulching. Also, heard that burying deeply helps prevent the newly planted rose bush from rocking in strong wind so it’s an added benefit!
I put new plants at eye lever and prop the label against the pot too. With some small ferns in containers, I push a label sideways along the pot and haven't lost one - yet.
I read somewhere that you should plant a banana peel under the roots of your rose bush. I did this with two roses and they did well, so now I am tossing kitchen scraps into planting holes for other shrubs.
The graft is where the big bumpy part is. Go outside and look at your own roses. He says to plant them deep with the graft (bump) under ground so the upper plant can maybe grow roots too.
If you used a light when shooting against the sun you will remove the shadows from the view and will look way clearer yes you have to stare at the light but anyway just sayin... tks for the tips..
Roses want sun and water. That's why they do so well in Greece! I have to water my plants every evening when the sun has gone down and before it is dark.
Oh boy! I planted my first roses this past fall and I didn't plant them deep enough. We now have deep snow, but do you think that I could replant or add lots of soil in a hill around the rose to correct the mistake in the spring? Anyone?
I have a bad relationship with aphids so roses and I don't get along very well as a result. My patio probably doesn't have enough sun though, so it just wasn't meant to be.
I do not use grafted plants in my yard because here in Oklahoma, USA I've had plants freeze and the original plant spout out of the ground. Such a waster of money.
John when you’re filming close up if there is sunlight please stand in it rather than in the shade, otherwise it’s not possible to see clearly as in when you were trying to show us the union of rootstock and Rose
You also sometimes hide what you’re doing from the camera with your hand and so the back of your hand is all that is visible. Plus when you were planting the rose the whole and the rose were all in your shade and therefore not visible. This is a very frustrating video John
lhsmbtpt your verbal explanation was fine but when you were pointing at the Rose roots it was impossible to see because either your hand was in front and between the camera and the roots, or too dark because you were standing in shade and there was bright sun behind you so it wasn’t possible to see what you were talking about. I’m not intending this as a criticism of you John or all of your skill in gardening but in fact I’m commenting on the camera man’s lack of understanding although I’m sure he means well. It was frustrating because I look forward to your videos and love your garden and want to learn from you. Best regards
I like how you are so delicate with your plants...
John is my favourite RUclips gardener, always interesting.
Thanks for filming more videos.
John thank you for these videos, we really need them right now
I can watch you all day !!!
This is something I have never heard anyone share, but I know it works. Because I do it and it works! Thank you! You are an amazing gardener!
I love the way he gives solutions in a very descriptive way. "You cut them vooom from the ground". He is adorable.

Still pulling up some of my John Cabot suckers. I loved it but dislike the flocks of Japanese Beetles, so it had to go. Shame really.

I have success with the OSO Easy Hot Paprika groundcover rose. All summer bloom, I do use systemic in the spring. I have 3 of those. In Z4b Minnesota.
@@SleepyKittens maybe that's what I'll get next! Will have to google it😊

Thks John, that's wat I have done, glad to know I did it right, keep on gardening love your program, from Holland

This is for potassium which helps roses with recovery from shock
CIA knows. Love it 😊
Hi John thank you very much what are the plants planted against the fence. Are they conifers. Certainly very close to fence. Thank you 🙏
Brilliant John. Great knowledge. I am a new youtube gardener from Ireland.
Thanks John, what is your opinion on planting a rose in a large container? Cheers
What pruning loppers are you using ? I like them because they’re adjustable for various levels of the garden

What is the tree in the background towards the end, that has no branches on one side? Was it pruned that way or is it a shade issue?
So, does that rule of thumb - plant roses deep, apply to all types roses? I have had NO luck with long term roses, I now know why!
I never planted roses in my life and 2 arrived yesterday. Does this method apply to all roses? I have Earth Angel and A Sophrire Lad

Just dig up the roses and plant them deeper

I thought it was a mistake to plant roses that deep and should be planted at the soil level in the pot.
Camera work not very good....to dark to see what you were talking about. Dang I need help planting roses.
Your cameraman needs to stand the other side of you
Jane White yeah, needs to learn how to

How is it frustrating. Just put the graft union under the soil. I am so grateful for your videos. Thanks John Lord
