"Not like anything I've heard before". Exactly what we all thought when hearing Yes for the first time. 1971 for me. Been a lifelong fan since. Their music demands multiple listens to absorb and appreciate. Well worth the effort.
I remember exactly where I was, and everything about that moment, when I first heard the opening to Roundabout. Everything else fell away from my awareness, just like that scene in West Side Story, where Tony and Maria see eachother for the first time, and suddenly, they're alone in silence. I grabbed the person who was using Roundabout for a dance assignment and screamed at her "WHO IS THIS???" "Oh, aren't they great? They're Yes!" and then, within a week, I started hearing them all over campus- everything from Fragile all the way back to Time and a Word. I practically ran up the hill to Lenox to buy Fragile. As beautiful as a sunset.
Starship Trooper, Yours Is No Disgrace, I've Seen All Good People, Long Distance Runaround, And You And I, Siberian Khatru, Heart of The Sunrise. That's a start.
Ladies and gentlemen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth. Your reaction was heart warming to us silver tops. South Side of The Sky has all of Yes's talents showcased. Sound Chaser is Yes's take on jazz fusion with time signature slides. Enjoy your Yes journey. A theatrical prog group called Genesis song called Battle of Epping Forest is a good introduction. 🙏🍁

Prog-rock is music you have to really listen to enjoy it. And that's what you do when you want to react to music. That's why young people who react to prog seem to appreciate it. Yes, Sound Chaser and South Side of the Sky, and Heart of the Sunrise would be good continuations before going to the great 20 minutes epics.
Two things to remember about Yes: they came first, and they will *always* blow your mind. The only thing you can really expect, when you hear a Yes song for the firs time, is that it'll be gorgeous and take you to space, and bring you back for a soft landing. They are a deep and lovely rabbit-hole. I'm jealous that you have all those astounding prog masterpieces to hear for the firs time- the big canvases, and the small intimate works. You have yet to fully grok the singular beauty that was Yes. Time to Awaken. (No, seriously, you're not ready for Awaken, yet, but you'd love South Side of the Sky.)
@@Azimov-REACTS SSOTS is underrated, I think; I have profound memories of it, especially that stunning break in the middle (with THOSE VOCALS). I saw ARW perform it live!! When they started the intro, I just sat there saying "holy shit, they're gonna play THAT!!!" and Rick Wakeman was right on top of the piano solo. If I'd died right then, I would have died happy!!!
❤❤❤😂😂😂😂 YES!!! MORE VICTIMS of the 70s YESBOMB! This is their Classic HEYDEY era. They were the NO 1 of the genre & crucial inventors of the genre itself. ALWAYS EXPECT the unpredictable unexpected from these 5 member virtuoso MASTERS. BTW this is only 1971. The 2 albums that year were BRILLIANT yet 72 Close to the Edge album surpassed it & EVERY band in ROCK creatively, technically and musically.. And they werent done. Each new 70s album went FURTHER & DEEPER into uncompromising and deliberately non-commercial experimentation which is the blueprint of PROGROCK. It was never a genre that relied on or seeked mainstream Radio success or approval.
roundabout was written during a tour of Scotland, hence the references to mountains ,valleys, winds, lakes , eagles etc, plus the numerous roundabouts they encountered on the road before they could return home to their loved ones
Great reaction! You have an amazing and vast catalog of YES music to explore , before even getting into their solo albums and collaborations. Jon Anderson's work with Vangelis as "Jon & Vangelis" is stunning and Chris Squire's Fish Out of Water is a masterpiece. Rick Wakeman has near 50 albums, and has guested with David Bowie, Cat Stevens and many others. I'm subbing for more YES!! TY!
You are hearing a tiny portion of the free ride YES takes us on. Its the best progrock. Chris Squires is the bassist and most bassists after him give him cred for being the best and the most inspiring. Dig deeper and see what they offer before Owner of a Lonely Heart. They didn’t give a crap about popularity before that. They played what they felt. Not many can say that.
Oh, you've just scratched the surface of YES excellence! Try "Going for the One", "Awaken", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I"', "Siberian Khatru'", "Starship Trooper"...basically any YES music from the 1970's to early 1980's. Best band ever.
YES is the greatest progressive rock band in my opinion. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them. Loads of greats including "Roundabout", "Awaken", "The Gates of Delirium", "Close to the Edge", "Turn of the Century", "Starship Trooper", "Perpetual Change", "That, That Is", "The Revealing Science of God", "In the Presence of" lots more.

This is the song that put the band into the international limelight. It is the pinnacle of progressive rock which other bands that followed try to emulate though never reached these heights! So many unforgettable songs like And You And I, Close to The Edge, Siberian Khatru, Perpetual Change, Southside of The Sky, and Awaken. Try it you’ll like what you hear!
Agreed! I've been a die-hard YES fan since 1975, and I've gotta tell ya: I love seeing all these young listeners jaws drop when they hear this band's music! Especially from their 70s music! There is so much more to explore from Yes!
I have to go back a LONG way to recall the first time I’d ever heard this magical song. It had already made waves the year before, but I really wasn’t exposed to it until I finally caught it on one day on FM radio during the summer of ‘ 73. I was only 11 and it just blew me away. I’d never heard a song quite like that before. Especially the badass, bass intro by Squire. Then how the song weaves back and forth from mellow to ripping, is just perfectly executed. Like many others, “ Roundabout “ is the very initial song that woke me up to the world of prog, long before I even knew what prog was. Thanks for the review !

Great reaction do give more of their songs a go. "And You and I" is a great one "Siberian Khatru" another in fact you just can't go wrong with any of their songs all top notch.
Lyrics for ANY YES-SONG don't matter. There is no stories in the words, just thoughts randomly put together to supplement the music. However early albums had a strong spiritual aspect, but not religious. The song "You + I" could also be called "God + Me".
This is prog rock of 70s, and many bands impacted this genre in their own way, nothing sounds the same, my personal favorite prog rock band is early Genesis, their composing skill out of this world
Quite a few people have mentioned to listen to very early Genesis ( i only know the songs with Phil Collins as singer) - so im def up for listening to early stuff by them - can you recommend anything? P.S. I did not realise Genesis was Prog Rock 😵

I also only knew this band from Phil Collins, and I had no idea how deep their music was in the early 70s. I was also shocked to learn that Phil Collins was a monstrous drummer, and he is never even considered himself a singer, he was a master of the drums and to this day remains the most interesting drummer to me, Neil Peart said that he was a fan of Collins' playing. I was also shocked to learn that another 80's pop icon - Peter Gabriel was on vocals at that time and after his departure the band slowly moved into 80's pop. In general the band is full of surprises. Each of their 5 albums with Peter each has its own sound, it’s difficult to choose just one masterpiece, but for a start I think the best recommendation would be “Firth Of Fifth”, you won’t be disappointed for sure

So many incredible songs…they take you away so …get ready and note it may take a few listens to able to absorb all that you heard!! 1969, 1970 were like the Cambrian Explosion in terms of music. Sound were coming out we had never heard before and effected so much of rock music from there on out. The variety was suddenly vast. This is the first time I've watched you guys react to rock music and I don't know what your musical background is, but it sounds like rock is new to you. You remind me of what it's like the first time I went to a big inner East Coast city. Everything looked like a cacophony of row houses, ornamented windows and entrances, fire escapes, shops and on and on. But after you live in these areas for awhile, it all starts to make sense and no longer is your mind filled, unable to focus. Your brain achieves order and now you're living in an organized environment. If you're where it sounds like you are from your reaction, it will all start to fall in place with more exposure.
Hopefully, you will listen to more of the greatest band ever. Anderson, Squire, and Howe were the creative geniuses behind Classic Yes. OwnerOALH, is not YES. These guys will take you on trips you can not even imagine. Nice reaction. Awaken and Close to the Edge will blow you away, but start with The Yes Album and Fragile before you jump into the epics, you will appreciate them more IMO.

Headphones required guys. Next time do the remastered version. Always do the remastered version, because sound tech was still in infancy back then.

Owner of a Lonely Heart was after they abandoned their Prog roots, and went in a more commercial/soft rock direction.
Early YES songs are not really suitable for those with a short attention span and those brought up on a diet of bland pop music,,,,you have to listen to them rather than dance around your bedroom
Why not try listening to the song instead of repeatedly stopping with your no clue comments!
