The thing about Macs two albums though, is due to the subject matter present it genuinely just changes the listening experience once he’s gone. It’s not a matter of pretending you like something, it’s a matter of genuinely changing your view because things have changed. As others have mentioned plenty of rappers have died that Fantano hated before and after their death.

Pretty much everything WMWTSO to Circles would be a 8.5/9-10/10 range. That man helped me, and still helps me so much with my inner demons. He just got it. He got depression. He got addiction. I could tell he wasn’t faking it. This was really who he was in his music, and I don’t mean that he was just a depressed addict and nothing more. No, he had a beautiful perspective on life, relationships, hope, optimism, etc. Even in his darkest times, Faces aside, there was always a little bit of hope bleeding through the cracks. Anytime I’m going through something and I just feel like I have no way out, it’s like he’s there with me, telling me “hey, everything’s okay. It’s all a part of your journey.” It’s just so wild how someone you’ve never met can have such an impact on you, and that’s why music and art in general is just so damn powerful. Celebrity deaths make me sad, sure, but this is one I don’t think I’ll ever truly get over. He inspires me, and for only being 26 is just unfathomable, because the lines he wrote and the emotion when he rapped/sang could only be done by a true student of life. It’s not about the years, it’s about what you do with the years. RIP Mac, I hope you knew how many hearts you touched, and will continue to touch, for generations and lifetimes to come.

I really dislike the idea of reviewing music. I understand that on a technical level you can review and be correct on how some music is but at the end of the day sounds and words will always have a different effect on every person in the world and that’s the most beautiful part of it.
How does the inherent subjectivity of music and art in general cause reviewing at large to be a bad idea? A review is literally just expressing your own thoughts and feelings on an album, just in a more structured way than usual. It isn't about being "right" and it never has been. Some of his fans on the other hand seem downright rabid. As soon as someone's opinion differs ever so slightly out of line with their own they go ballistic, like one person can't have a different opinion than others.
