  • So Which Is Better? Dips Versus Push Ups? Many people looking for a push exercise or a chest shoulders and triceps wonder which they should do, which should they focus on, the push up or the dip. In this video and first of a series of videos, I will go through point by point scenario by scenario which is better for you, should you pick the push up or the dip. The dip and push up are both pushing exercises that work the chest, shoulder and tricep muscles. They are both a key calisthenics exercise that is a stepping stone to other calisthenics exercises like the muscle up or planche push up. One is a horizontal pushing movement while the other is a kind of vertical pushing movement but as a whole they pretty much do the same thing. This kind of video is helpful for beginners to calisthenics so they can see if the push up is for beginners or if the dip is good for beginners.
    Even though they are similar in many ways, there are points or situations where one will be better than the other. At the end of the video you will be able to decide which better for you between the push up and the dip

    I've been doing nothing but dips and chins for three years, with excellent results. I'm lazy, and I'm the kind of guy who gets into a gym for six months to lift tons of weights and suddenly gives up. I knew that i had to create a habit, like brushing my teeth, to be consistent and see results.
    So I focused on my upper body and on two exercises: dips and chins. I do dips with an old granny walker and chins with a cheap doorframe bar. I usually did only one exercise a day, for four sets, alternating between dips and chins. Although sometimes I just did the two exercises on the same day, 3x a week.
    Now I'm committed to doing "something more" for a more rounded routine, so I added Arnold presses for my shoulders with a pair of dumbbells and bodyweight squats because I realized I had legs ;-)
    Really, I feel that this ultra-simple-minimalist routine is all I need to be reasonably fit and look good at 52.
    Simple trumps optimal. Good enough is often better than perfect.
    Keep-it-simple. Consistency is the key. For everything.

      Yes it’s very easy for people and a lot of channels focus too much on “optimal “
      Or “maximum muscle growth” forgetting we are not all professional athletes or pro bodybuilders. I want a program that allows me to be fit and stronger than can fit into my lifestyle and not something I have to fit my life around it. I’m a huge man of minimalist training and have been for many years but when I talk about it most people will reply with “
      Is that all you do” and struggle with the idea that less is more especially for natural people with normal lives

      I think 2 things can be true. Ultimately something is better than nothing and consistency is what brings results. But also minimalist training leaves a lot of gaps in one's training. depending on what the focus is you might be lacking in the mobility and injury prevention front, torso dominance because there's not enough arm volume or underdeveloped legs coz all the focus is on the upper body.

  • @jayee172
    @jayee172 2 года назад +23

    For me i think dips are the rawest form of upper body pressing strength alongside the OHP simply because it removes any lower body stabilisation and works every single upper body muscle, plus its super easy to load.

    I’m going to say push-ups. There are so many variations of it and I think it seems to be an exercise that’s easily done injury free, consistently, across all age groups, again using the variation that your body can tolerate. If you get real strong on push-ups, there’s a lot of carryover to dips if you decide to try some too for variety.

    This confirms my experience. I’ve done press-ups for some time and increased my strength with no issues. Then as soon as I started dips I got a shoulder muscle injury within a week. Maybe my fault for not starting with assisted dips. But I also find the exercise awkward to perform and I think it’s easy to make a mistake and pick up another injury. So no more dips for me. Now I just do push-ups , inverted rows, pull ups, squats, abs, on a Push Pull Legs schedule 6 days per week.

      Have you ever got into weighted or rings push ups or more progressive versions? Yes the dip straight away is a harder exercise for for stronger people with the standard version of each will find the dip harder

  • @Lolek080195

    Push ups when I’m serious and want to play with variations, rings etc.
    Dips are simpler and great for quick workout or intense set with some weight. So it depends on the mood. When I’m feeling under the weather it’s easier for me to do bench press and dips than to play around with push ups. I still would use them as warm up instead of light bar or dips.

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  2 года назад +3

      That's a fair opinion and i get what you mean> Dips just being harder mean its a simpler way to get in an effective workout with the push up, yes has more variations , means more effort to make it harder to the level of dips. The great thing about them are they are both accessible and easy to even superset together or like you said, use the push up to warm up for the dip and in the old days the push up would be a burn out for weighted dips.

  • @adamkuc9440
    @adamkuc9440 2 года назад +8

    I would say dips because they require more technique and are harder since you lift 100% of your body weight. Great exercise. Push ups are really easy to do if you are light around 70-80 kg this less effective.

  • @duncanwalshfitnessweightlo9329
    @duncanwalshfitnessweightlo9329 2 года назад +1

    Great video! A standard dip is harder than a standard push up because it requires more strength lifting full body weight, so logically there would be more gain with dips. As you say though, more difficult for beginners or if you are more prone to injury or niggles with dips.
    Interestingly, the best way I have found to overload the dips WITHOUT extra weight is to fatigue the "push" muscles with 30 seconds of press ups, then within 10 seconds start say 30 seconds worth of dips. They are then much harder and those muscles are effectively overloaded. Take a minutes rest and repeat 3 or 4 times, after each combo taking a minutes rest. Really tough. I am stiff everytime!

    I remember i had a shoulder injury from dips and did lots of incline pushups to recover i think after doing so many it managed to make my shoulders stronger cus i never got shoulder pain from dips again but it all depends on goals dips will give u a bigger set of back arms i feel pushups will give u an all around good excersize dips doint hit your core like pushups do and with pushups u can do more reps leading to greater metabolic response for fat loss

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  Год назад +1

      welcome to the channel and thanks for sharing. Any idea what caused the injury while doing the dips? i think for some reasons push ups seem to help the shoulders, they are such a great exercise and allow you to build up the strength in a controlled manner

    • @fuckthepolitics3233
      @fuckthepolitics3233 Год назад

      @@LeeDowningKeat yeah what caused the injury was sloppy, fast reps. Ive always been into training fast and full range of motion instead of slowing tempo down or slowing down on the negatives i feel like it gives you explosive power so i definitely like training at higher intensity i think it was just a combination of not resting bad form and pushing out sloppy reps towards the end of my workouts. Im 6ft 220 lb and i just do basic around the world sets and reps. Also people always say calisthenics is better cus it doesnt injure you but its different for the heavyweights out there after all when i do dips i am pressing 220lbs. I think all the volume just caught up to my shoulder not to mention dips are really hard on the shoulders in general. Especially if the dip bar is too wide a narrower dip bar will stop shoulder pain from experience.

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  Год назад +1

      @@fuckthepolitics3233 I feel you buddy I’m on the heavier side and the lighter you are the easier Calisthenics is and don’t think people appreciate that sometimes so understand your position. Copy of tips for that , you are right and there is benefit to going faster as it’s activates the fast twitch fibres plus it feels good to be explosive doesn’t it. One thing I do is be explosive on the concentric and just go slower on the way down, not to slow that it wiped out my energy and strength but controlled. The other tips is I agree with you again , dips on fixed bars can be shitty for getting a good width just right for you, so try doing them on rings that will allow you to get a width just right for you and will actually make you even stronger. I’m sure you knew all this already but if you didn’t I hope that helps. Thanks for your reply 💪

  • @lucashenriques4242
    @lucashenriques4242 2 года назад +1

    Correct if im wrong, im just trying to see if it makes sense. But like, both dips and push ups hit mainly the triceps, chest and shoulders right? But the Dip is by definition harder, because you lift more bodyweight unlike the push-ups where you have already your feet on the ground (ofc has its variations, like deficit pushup, inclined/declined etc..). So that said wouldn't the regular Dip build more overall muscle than the regular push-up just by definition ?

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for your question and I’ll try my best to answer it. There are many ways to build muscle and the dip being harder may mean the intensity maybe harder and that’s one way to build muscle but not the only way. The other thing is that some people cannot do a dip but can do a push up so the push would be better at building muscle. The point of the video is that there isn’t a universal “ best exercise” for everyone. As said in the video and what you said the dip is a harder chest exercise to the push up like you said because you are lifting more of your body weight so you are right there. But with the push up there are variations so why restrict to the regular push up when the variations maybe better .

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  2 года назад +1

      In many cases it can be a bad thing and one to talk to a physio about. The pain is sending us a message that we need to address so the point is more directed at the idea of just pushing through the pain and ignoring those signals. the pain called mean many things and its always best to take a step back and learn why, being injured is the worst thing for progression

    If hand-stand push-ups are a thing, then dips. If they aren't, then push-ups. All depends on where you are in your ability to in my eyes. So push-ups definitely more versatile than dips, not to mention no equipment needed, except the floor or wall. Push-ups definitely a go-to exercise over dips! =)
    Yeah, same! There are just way too many variations to the exercise that requires nothing more than you and a wall/floor.
    On a side note, I finally bought rings! OMG I should have bought these earlier!! Even just for starting out, because of well you engage muscles when your arm is free to move. I couldn't believe how much more activation there was, even though I need to build up my stabilizers more now =P

    • @LeeDowningKeat

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  2 года назад +2

      That’s a sensible approach and tends to be the standard, your right in it’s a harder version and if you want to get bigger and stronger and find the push too easy now the dip is a great approach. The thing is there are ways to make the push up harder and many people think of the push up as something only a beginner should be using. Even strong people can benefit from the push up

      You can’t go wrong with dips. Great for chest shoulders and triceps

      hahah fair enough , that makes sense, Just make sure you add in more back reps too or you will have an imbalance, 100 pushing and only 50 pulling
