- Hypoglossal nerve palsy is a rare condition that occurs when the hypoglossal nerve is damaged. The hypoglossal nerve, also known as cranial nerve XII, controls the muscles of the tongue. When this nerve is damaged, the tongue deviates towards the affected side, and the patient may experience difficulty swallowing, chewing, and speaking.
