Serkin and Abbado began their (nearly complete) Mozart cycle in 1981, and this was done in 1986, with no. 24 in 1985. I think neither of these were in Serkin's repertoire (both were his only recordings) except for these DG accounts. He was also planning on recording no. 26, but wanted to prepare his own version (filling in parts Mozart did not write), and never got around to it. I would agree that it was "late" for Serkin, but not that it was "too late."

Unfortunately, too late for Rudolf Serkin!

A bit harsh - there is much to take from this recording made in 1986 when he was 83. He is unsurpassed in the slow movement and plays with more attack than the crisper but more delicate excellent version by Mitsuko Uchida who took over from him as the director of Marlboro after his and Irene's deaths. The LSO under Abbado provided really good backing.

@@peterlever7286 Definitely! I quite agree with you. Rudolf Serkin ranks among my favourite pianists.
