As a jujitsu practitioner it did always strike me as odd to haar "you must keep the buckler extended at all times to defend". Glad to see that intuition wasn't misplaced :)

Keeping the buckler extended is ideal for someone who is new to the weapon set as it does allow for greater defense. That being said there are plays and positions that keep the buckler close. these are risky so they should really be used by more experienced practitioners.

@@stephenkime5946 Oh yeah I wasn't trying to give the impression that it was bad advice, I'm sure it absolutely works an it makes sense from a geometry perspective. All I wanted to say is that what I've personally heard from the HEMA community online pointed to there being no exception to that rule. *That* struck me as odd, that's all and thanks for the great video ^^

@@harrisoctavius You're very welcome and that was not at all the impression I got from your comment. It's a shared misconception that the buckler cannot be placed in a great number of positions to garner a number of different responses or effects. All of these are based on training and use and honing their effectiveness and sadly many people don't want to do the work so the perspective shifts to the position which provides the most protection being the "only" option. whereas in reality combat is fluid and use of more "Baiting" or retracted positions are effective provided you have taken the time to hone your sense of timing and measure so that you don't execute them late. You likely are keenly aware of this Being a BJJ practitioner. There are "High risk" motions in your Discipline as well I'm sure. I would not begin to assume as I am no expert on BJJ.

I really need to get the scratch together to get "ye olde sword fighting equipment" since I know a fairly good teacher of HEMA in my area and this looks like so much fun.

I love retracted guard positions like this, keeping your own weapon(s) out of the way, inviting an attack that you can then exploit. The sneakier the better!

Nice, but this and the last few videos have such a low volume I can hardly hear anything, even with maxed out volume settings on my device.

Yes, the sound needs some love. Perhaps a set of clip on mics is needed.

I like a lot positions with a "resting" sword!

in our group we tend to call any position desinged to look lazy or undefended as a fools guard mostly because it just sounds fun and it in practice alot of fun to teach noobies the error of their assumptions

I like the video. But I know that this is about sword and buckler but I have a question about long sword.
How do you defend against Tatar cut. (sorry I don't know how is it in English or German) What it is is that you block your opponent cut with your strong allowing him to press on your sword slightly. then bouncing your sword off his sword while changing stands and attacking him from the other side and chopping his head off. (I'm not sure if I made this clear but its the best I can do) my question is how do you defend against that?

This is difficult to field in a text format and i feel like it's specificity needs a different medium to fully answer. If you have any video examples of what you're describing you can perhaps email them to us so i can fully grasp what you're describing.
for now i will just say that there are only so many ways that a body moves effectively in a combative environment. Many attacks can be defended with a few basic defenses provided you follow a few simple rules
      1. always stay balanced - shifting forward and backward is fine in the pocket but remaining balanced allows for nimble movement and good mechanical structure when defending and counterattacking.
      2. defend on the mid point of the blade instead of the strong - this is a flexible rule as I believe this will not always happen in combat but being able to recognize a parry on the strong. That being said defending with the strong will protect against the attack. the reason it is less ideal is because it limits what you can do afterwards
      3. Only tense at the moment of impact - This is a timing thing. As with attacks you want to stay fluid and relaxed and only tense at the moment of impact. this will allow full transfer of power into the defense and relaxing again at the right moment will allow you to quickly move on to the planned or conditioned counter action.

The audio mixing (mastering? not sure the difference) is a bit wacko in this video, can barely hear the commentary but when it swaps to the demonstration the music is deafening
