  • Finally decided to buy myself a baitcaster and went with this Lew's Mach Pro Combo from Cabela's. Minus the shipping issue in which it arrived broken, I loved it. For my first time throwing a baitcaster I only had 2 backlashes and managed to catch a bunch of fish during it's first outing on Lake Onalaska. Looking forward to it catching many more with this setup!
    Let me know any baitcaster tips or advice that I should know! Also I'm curious your opinion on the whole left or right hand retrieve? To me the left hand retrieve is so much easier, so I don't understand why right hand retrieve is more common?

    One tip I’ve learned and found to work really good for getting backlashes out is to put your thumb on the spool pretty hard, reel down, then let your line out and gently start pulling your line out. That gets 90% of my messes out without losing line. There are definitely tons of videos to watch to learn stuff like that, which I did a few years ago when I bought my first casting rod. Nice vid👍🤙

      Garrett L. Thanks! Overall I think I did pretty well just have to keep gaining confidence with it! I’m excited to fish frogs with it once the topwater bite begins

    Good job for first baitcaster. One good backlash with get you thumbing that spool a little more. Stop the spool just before it touches the water. I'm gonna buy a Lew's Pro combo. I have a Lew's Mach 2 combo that I love. The Green one. 😊 Works great.

      Thanks! I’ve gotten so much better in short time. They are definitely fun to fish but I still end up using my spinning combos 90% of the time, granted im usually fishing walleye so that makes sense

    Growing up I've only used spinning reels. That's all I knew, left hand retrieve. When I first put my hands on a baitcaster about a year ago, the left handed style didn't feel ergonomic for some reason.

    I adjust my grip after casting to where only my pinky is behind the trigger, allows me to hold the reel in my entire hand and I feel it gives me more control of the rod. Since I’m adjusting my grip anyway, I move the rod to my left hand and then reel with right. It also helps spread the workout to both arms since the right casts and the left hook sets and fights the fish.
    Don’t fret though, both retrieves have their perks! I can’t engage the reel quite as fast since I’m swapping hands and have even used my wife’s left hand retrieve for things I want to start reeling right away.

    • @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors
      @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors  4 года назад

      That’s a good point how it switches the work between hands! And yes I’ve since moved my hand over more of the reel for greater control also

    Lew's reel on a Lew's rod makes right hand cast, left hand retrieve with your hand farther back easier.
    Put that reel on a St Croix rod and you will see why people choke up on it to where you couldn't cast so you cast right then wrap your left hand around it and reel with your right.

    I just started using baitcasters and thought the same as you on the right/left thing. I did buy a cheaper right retrieve after I got my left retrieve mach2, figuring everyone uses right i might like it too... I'm getting used to them both and can fish them both but the left is way more natural for me. I feel your woes in learning it. I had braid on and did a hell no after I lost my 4th lure. Mono on one fluro on the other to see wich I like better. I like the looks of this rod but its similar to my mach 2.

    • @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors
      @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors  4 года назад

      Yes I've heard mono is definitely the way to go while starting out. Plus it's way cheaper than a good braid so if you do tangle a bunch like me it's not as bad. Thanks for the comment and good luck fishing!

    If anyone’s looking for a bait caster combo but this is too expensive, the abu Garcia black max paired with the Berkeley lighting rod is a good choice

    Congrats on the new combo man. I recently got my first baitcaster as well. Went with the new model daiwa tatula ct and grabbed a lightning rod to use with the reel for now. Plan on getting a croix triumph for it soon. I never understood the whole right hand thing with baitcasters either. Left hand feels so much better especially being able to set the hook with my right dominant hand. Also picked up a shimano slx combo a few weeks ago but of course the rod came warped so i'm waiting for my replacment from tackle direct so i feel your pain with the whole getting a messed up rod through the mail. 3 out of the 4 rods i've gotten online came messed up. I feel like its a pretty common thing unfortunately.

      That’s unfortunate they need to find a better way to ship them it’s a shame expensive rods are continuously getting damaged.

      FYI, with a baitcaster, right handed people reel with the right hand.. alot of new people don't get that and buy the wrong one

    • @tankdog03ify
      @tankdog03ify 2 года назад

      U cast right handed a switch,, that way u have your dominant hand free without switching when u catch fish or whatever

    • @tankdog03ify
      @tankdog03ify 2 года назад

      Your non dominant hand is made to cover the whole reel when reeling, to me your holding oddly, not like I do anyways, a spinning reel is a whole different platform

    • @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors
      @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors  2 года назад +2

      I’ve definitely got a lot better. I wouldn’t say I’m doing it “wrong”. Just what feels natural. For me I want my strong right hand on the rod doing the hook sets.

    • @markallen3614
      @markallen3614 11 месяцев назад

      @tankdog03ify That's just wrong. It is 100% personal preference. I am right handed, but can not stand to hold the rod in my left. Makes 0 sense. You want the rod in your dominant hand for better hook sets and control. Plus it is so much easier to start reeling as soon as your bait hits the water, like when you're fishing shallow water and don't want to immediately sink in the mud. also with a lot of top water or slow sinking lures the fish sometimes hit as soon as it hits the water. Kind of screwed when you're caught playing the switching hands game. The right handed people using the right hand retrieve just goes back to when there was no such thing as left hand retrieve bait casting reels. That's all they had and learned, and so, passed it on. Then the people who learned from them just assumed that's the way you're supposed to fish. Not true.

    What you're calling a brake is actually the spool tensioner. The magnetic brake is on the side.

    Just got this rod for christmas and mine also came broken… snapped in half with no tube at all. the rod was zip tied to the inside of the box. Kind ridiculous. Idek if i’ll order it again, kinda hate once pieces and this experience made me not really want another one. Hopefully by the time i finish this video it will change my mind.

    • @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors
      @JacksonBaumgartOutdoors  8 месяцев назад +1

      Mine came damaged too and I had to bring it to a Cabela’s and replace it there. Annoying that they ship poorly as a 1 piece rod. I definitely recommend getting them at an actual store for that reason. It also allows you to make sure the eyelets are lined up. A lot of times rods aren't always built equally.

      I don’t fully know what part of the video you’re referring to as it was filmed like 4 years ago, but if you think I kept one out of the water too long before releasing it I do apologize that it offended you. I am a big advocate for getting fish back quick, so can appreciate the fact you are looking out for the fish also. Keep promoting people to get them back quick as there’s definitely too many younger fisherman that keep them out too long, but try approaching it in a more informative way so they can learn from it.
