For some reason in Pennsylvania, we have sauerkraut and pork and go outside and bang pots and pans on new years. The sauerkraut will bring luck and then pot banging scares the spirits of the last year away.

Hola Ruby. Very nice video. Fun too. You promised months ago that you were going to make this video. Thank you. I'm not sure you mentioned that the lingerie has to be new. Last year's lingerie no longer has any power. As scanty as some lingerie is (I guess that's the fun of it) you could wear red and yellow lingerie for love and prosperity and still not be adequately covered (but I guess that would still be the fun of it). Some people believe that the farther you carry the suitcase the farther you will travel. Here are a few other Mexican traditions I found. Have paper money in hand or pocket (or shoes!) to welcome in the new year and assure prosperity. Sweep all of the rooms in the house, plus the entrance and steps, and the street in front of the house to remove all traces of the old year. For extra good luck and prosperity scatter 12 gold coins on the ground in front of the house and sweep them into the house to have money and other abundance in the coming year. Spill clean water on the sidewalk in front of the house as the clock rings in the new year to purify the house and to wipe away tears. Eat a spoonful of cooked lintels to have prosperity and fortune. Give a handful of raw lintels to family and friends so they will have abundance in the coming year. Give a small bottle (3") filled with layers of different types of seeds to friends to assure the will have abundance in the coming year (if they plant the seeds they might have an abundance of something). Give a woolly toy sheep as a gift to assure the recipient experiences wealth (wool = lana is slang for money). Write all of your undesirable habits and customs that you want to get rid of on a piece of paper and burn it. Place three stones (representing health,love, and money) in a place where they will be seen every day to achieve all three things. Light candles-- blue for peace, white for spirituality, yellow for abundance, green for health, red for love, orange for intelligence--no idea what burning brown or purple candles would bring--would pink candles bring spiritual love? I have no idea how a single person, or even a small family, could accomplish all of these as the new year was rolling in. Do any of these work? I suspect that the only one guaranteed to work would be wearing nothing but red lingerie in public. You would definitely find some sort of love :). Giving credit where credit is due I found these customs in a great blog called Mexico Cooks! by Rosalba Morales Bontolo. It is a great source for Mexican food, markets, crafts, architecture, traditions, etc. Highly recommended.

I’ve never heard of the empty suitcase but I know in Scotland they have “First Footing” with people entering house with coal I think. New Year or Hogmanay is a very big celebration in Scotland.

My family (U.S.) would eat black-eyed peas and boil a silver coin in cabbage and eat the cabbage on New Year's Day.

We eat 12 grapes at midnight and then drink sparkling wine, and on New Year's Day we have black eyed peas or other bean soup (for humility and to have a prosperous year).

That was a fun video, I hope Dave came back after eating with the lady you interviewed, lol! There are a lot of traditions for New Year's Eve in Mexico, I hadn't heard of any, or even any here in the U.S. (those I just read below are new to me), but where I live people shoot off fire crackers or shoot a gun into the air at midnight, don't know why. Feliz Año Nuevo!

I forgot to mention that the rifle goes against your shoulder, not your chin. A 12 gauge would have knocked you out. Dave should be teaching you these things. Be careful, stay well. I want years more videos.

Traditionally, those are common as well in the Philippines. During Christmas season and fiestas.
I saw an entire family walking around outside with suitcases last night. I had no idea why they were out there, but I knew it had to be some sort of New Year tradition. In the USA, especially in areas with German history, we have pork roast and sauerkraut on New Year's Day, and we watch American football. Some places, particularly in the southern USA will eat blackeye peas on New Year's Day for good luck. Other than that, I don't know of any traditions like the ones in Mexico. The underwear, suitcases, and grapes are fascinating and fun! Thank you for sharing the background on these customs.
