I agree but many studios have a great support staff of musicians that go unrecognized and always will. They were just in and part of the right studios. A lot of musicians came to those studios. the whole band premise didn't really come around strongly until the rock band concept when the entire band that toured and played were brought into the studios and given credit for their recordings and financial rights to the product. For instance the The Tijuana brass members could be whom ever Herb Albert wanted to hire. He could use session musicians to save money and then hire whom ever he wanted to play the concerts and pay them a salary instead of an even cut. A practice that was and still is very common in country music.
Tommy, was my fathers friend; then mine I am from Buffalo,,I grew up with these guys....remotly at most they moved to LA,,but you never leave your roots ( Buffalo) has produced some of the most influencila people ever,,,,these guy's wer LOVING, KIND, HONORABLE, DECENT, FAMILY MEN AND WOMEN, the most beautiful people you would ever want too know,,just honest decent,,,real, just real,,amazing talent!! AMAZING,,GOD IS REAL!!
The movie is finally getting a short theatrical run, starting this month (March 2015). Go over to the wrecking crew website to see where it will be screening. The movie will go out for DVD and VOD release around June of 2015. I have seen earlier versions of this movie and it is spectacular!
Having had the pleasure of exchanging emails with Denny, and personally knowing Al Casey in his last years in Phoenix, I cannot wait to see this fabulous documentary.
Just stumbled across this 9 year old (!) clip. The best, truest bit for me was @ 7:50 in, when Denny is talking about fretting over formats when he was missing recording history. So true. The crappy 8mm zapruder film is a more important document than many things captured on 70mm film or 8K UHD video. It's about content. Format is incidental. A lot of the wrecking crew film is home movies or personal snapshots. This is not a drawback. In fact it gives the story verisimilitude, seeing the principals in their element, in the day, caught in the moment. It's a wonderful testament. It may just be 'pop culture' but it helped define generations, and Tedesco captured it as well as anyone could.
Cannot thank you enough, Denny. When I was a teenager living in the middle of a cornfield in western Ohio I would have given anything to know the backstory to all those amazing songs I was hearing on the radio. Your film does that in a most compelling way.

When you saw these musicians name on albums by Simon and Garfunkel, Johnny Rivers on his vastly under-rated great album "Realization". The Mamas and The Papas etc. We started making it a point to check liner notes on new albums to see if any of these great talents were playing on those albums. We didn't know them as "The Wrecking Crew" but we knew and noticed the quality of work they were putting out there.

Have to wonder if Glenn Campbell put his stamp on it. Campbell insisted that he was on virtually every beach boys tune, and it was his favorite time in life hangin with the crew. I'm thinking- CAMPBELL!!! you are the best guitarist in the world when you let yourself really play, your better looking, great voice, and your playing Beach boy chords? I just realized who Rivers is...I see him in the poker circuit, using that drawall of his, NO SUNGLASSES, a consistent winner, very rarely losing but more than a few times he has taken the very big pots...see ya fellas. I would wager he musically knows more than almost anyone alive on how a record should be done. Never a superstar my guess he was one of the rare ones who stayed clear of all the vices, most importantly, alcohol. If, knowing his music, it were taken away I would be despondent. If I had the change, and he actually would sell an electric, I would so love that black one. As far as smarts- one of the very first to maintain the right to his music.
Glen Campbell toured with the Beach Boys when Brian Wilson stopped touring and stayed in the studio writing new music. Campbell left and his spot was taken by Bruce Johnston who still tours with the band today. Campbell did not record in the studio for the Beach Boys. That was the voices of Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. Brian would over-dub their voices and then multi-layer them on top of the instrumental tracks.
I love Glen Campbell but he was wrong. In fact by 1964-65 none of Brian's brothers were performing instrumentally in the studio with the exception of brother Carl who played the 12 string. Brian wrote and arranged all their music in the studio with studio musicians who later became known as the Wrecking Crew. It was during this period where Glen Campbell contributed. He was a studio musician and was among the other studio musicians who performed on the instrumental sections of the songs Brian Wilson was writing and arranging. Campbell then briefly toured with the band prior to Bruce Johnston joining the group. Campbell of course then went out on his own and became a legend in his own right.

The audience in the theater really dug the film and other Wrecking Crew guys like guitar man Billy Strange attended. A magical evening--thanks NFF!

Not only that, The Wrecking Crew is playing a concert after the 10/6 show. Hal Blaine, Don Randi, and Chuck Berghofer will be playing. Saw them play after a screening in LA and it was sooo cool!

Always wondered at the time why many of these popular bands sounded so bad live as compared to the studio recordings and didn't know the truth until many years later. Now I can listen to these old studio recordings and admire the great work the Wrecking Crew had done. So much great music and good memories that enriched the lives of millions of people. The only sad note to all this is the fact that these great musicians never received the credit due for their work and talent.
So right! They are at least starting to be recognized but yes, this was a secret back then. Seeing half the bands live, you were thinking wow, must have been a really off night. I thought that about Chicago and don't think they used session musicians but they must have used technical trickery. lol
Damn, when this documentary is available on DVD for all the public, you´ll have to elbow me out for being the first one to purchase it. I just invested (not spent) 2 hours on the "Wrecking Crew" site watching outtakes, and I was delighted with them. If the complete documentary is 1/10th as good as them, this is going to be a jewel for us music fans.

Absolutely, I guess they could be inducted as a proper band, save themselves the trouble of 20-some separate inductions, and finally balance the universe's karma by FINALLY acknowledging that this group of musicians changed the way the people subconsciously thought music should sound.

This is about those musicians. The two who went on to have their own successful solo careers were Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. The guy making the documentary is Tommy Tedesco's son, who was prolly the most used guitarist.

This is how I felt when they FINALLY gave tribute to the Funk Brothers, who were of course behind the Motwon hits. I'm lovin that these greats are being recognized for their AMAZING talent and contributions to all the music I grew up with and that I love! Being a session play is all I've ever dreamed of being. Love it! :)

Carmella Ramsey has a great voice, but also plays great fiddle and mandolin. She may still be with Patti Loveless playing twin fiddles with Jeannie Richardson.

Bought this DVD, read the book...these folks were amazing musicians with technique, creativity & skills that MADE hits.
THE HAIR ON MY ARMS STOOD AT ATTENTION AFTER WATCHING THIS.

It is a shame the record companies want royalties on a movie where the the musicians were paid 50 dollars to record million dollar hits

Campbell played guitar on a lot of the early beach boys records and originally replaced Brian in the touring band before Bruce Johnston.
