Today we're going to look at a vintage offering from Chicony with a rather elusive type of Cherry MX switch; MX white! It's high time I covered these. Hope you enjoy the video! :)

My dad and I toured a super old (but still in service as a sixth grade) school a while ago. It was built in the really early 1900s. While we were wandering around in the basement with the old boilers, pipes everywhere, and dirt floors all around, there was a whole computer setup tucked away in the corner on a desk. It was a 386! Had a wireless inferred mouse, nice monitor, and one of these keyboards! I later got with the super intendant and asked what his plans where with that setup.
He said he’ll just grab it and give it to me! After I picked it up, I was in awe of how good the keyboard felt and sounded. Nothing like I’ve ever heard or felt! Turns out it’s full of Blue Alps switches!! The board is in perfect condition, although some keys are worn a bit smoother than others, everything works perfectly! Even survived being in a dirty basement for over 20 years I reckon. I bought an AT to PS/2 adapter and I occasionally bring it out and play with it! Such a cool board with amazing switches!!
Computer works perfectly as well, turbo button and all! I does have OS/2 installed, so it’s a little out of my expertise but one of these days I’ll bring it out and fiddle with it.

@@ReaganReese I wish schools around here had basements with old stuff like that. Unfortunately water aquifers make it darn near impossible to have basements in the deep south, so schools definitely don't have tons of space to cram old stuff away afaik. Otherwise I would have begged to see if they had old stuff. I asked and they said none as old as I was looking for :/

I just found a early 80s (all clear) vintage white as an internal reset switch on a mint condition typewriter I bought of a flewmarket. It doesn't click at all. I think the lubricant is intact and I think it hasn't been activated a lot.
If you want I can send it over so that you can try it out and make a video on it. Funnily the typewriter also came with some thick pbt dye sub caps, that I think were made by cherry or gmk.

I didn't know cherry white had a dampened click, even if I have one that I bought to test! I supposed they are just a little stiffer cherry blues, as if you don't listen really carefully they sound really similar (at least lose switches) but the white is a little heavier. The difference from cherry blue is really slight, probably the ones you have in that keyboard are not that different from new ones. Also I opened one but I didn't see any lube (on both slider+jacket and housing), but swapping the slider on a blue housing made it still less rattly, even if holding the bare white and blue slider and shaking them they sound really similar.

Have your thought about doing a review on the NovelKeys Sherbet switch? It could be a fun review, they are a click bar clicky switch similar to Box Jade, however not nearly as insane. Actually osu players would like switches with hysteresis cause the lack of it would make it too easy to accidentally actuate a switch more than once, leading to the game basically failing them by not allowing them to hit the rest of the notes, a mechanic in the game called notelock.

Ordered a batch of MX whites around a year ago they were terrible. Something clearly went wrong with the QC of the whites as they were super incosistent (read a lot of forum posts with the similar problem going back as far as 2012 so it's clearly a widespread issue), around a third of them didn't click at all. The ones that had the clicky sound fluctuated between common blues and what I assume was intended to be the white (and those were quite nice). Swapped them out to box navys just better in every way.

I have to mention that 99.99% of unix users that are still alive will really hate the "unix layout" of Ctrl-where-Caps-is because there is zero benefit from having it there nowadays, and people who are used to it are dead. like, literally they just died of age.
ofc you have people who think they're cool when they buy a brand-new keyboard with that layout, but any area has that

    • @defvii

@@davestephens3246 many modern unix (linux) users use win key and alt in similar amounts to ctrl, which are also often unfortunately placed for ergonomics in many combinations. I think it's impossible to get away from some modifier combinations being bad ergonomically with any layout. That being said, rebinding Caps is very popular (by far the most common key to remap) as for many people (me included) it's basically completely unused and in a very useful spot. I rebind it to Esc which is the most common I think, especially if you use Vim bindings, but Ctrl probably has a decent amount of people who aren't using standard Vim bindings.

@@davestephens3246 you use the pinky in both cases, given we're using Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V.
btw, these are Windows-hotkeys, hardly any Unix-system used this kind of Copy-Paste in the 80s, Ctrl+C is historically the cancel-command, used to cancel operations and later, to kill the program running in the foreground

Still prefer my Red Linear switches. Smooth, no clicky noise, and are very easy to both type and game on! Started off on clicky blues, and after a while, I got so sick of that sound. Moved up to this keyboard, the SteelSeries Apex 7, and it's been like night and day in comparison! Clicky blues got me into mechanical keyboards, but I love the Red switches!

The thing that IBM AT, Sun Type 3/HHKB (UNIX layout), DEC LK layouts got right: the CTRL position.
A thing that both Vi and Emacs both agree on, because it's a commonly used modifier, and reaching it on a standard 101 layout can be relatively painful if you touchtype

I have similar XT keyboard, also Cherry MX White... But as i am not a fan to XT-s at all i prefer AT ones, so i could use them on my modern system, so i will sell/ trade this one, or if not i will just get a Cherry G80-1000 keyboard with blacks, and solder these MX White instead, as i have MX Black on a G80-1000.....
