      It could be because Trewelha, despite being correct about the lesser magistrates, is fundamentally wrong about the Union. Trewelha describes the States as lesser magistrates, when, in reality, they are the higher magistrates. The States ratified the Constitution and gave it legal authority. The States and the States alone have the authority to amend the Constitution (Article V). All powers not delegated to the general government are reserved to the States (Amendment 10). The States cannot act as lesser magistrates because they are the ones rightfully in charge of the whole shebang, all Federal usurpations notwithstanding.
      The lesser magistrate doctrine could be usefully and righteously acted out by individual officials in all levels of government or by counties and cities, but it definitely doesn't apply to the States.

    Great job on setting the context for understanding governmental authority and its limits. While there are apparent reasons for such authorities to have control over the the citizenry, there ought to be rational guidelines on how such magistrates in power may or may not impose certain laws over the people.
    This should be known by Christians all over the world, especially those in regions with such overreaching control by certain governments.

    I saw a shirt one time that had an image of George Washington with the modern caption “Me and my homies would be stacking bodies by now.” While I wouldn’t wear the shirt, myself, as Doug puts it, we are enduring well beyond what the Founders put up with.

    • @GrantAHolcomb
      @GrantAHolcomb 2 года назад +2

      @Kenny Bugh One of the things we’re enduring is increasing hostility to gun rights and the 2nd Amendment. Some candidates for high office have already started suggesting firearm confiscation.
      You may have a different opinion on the matter, but I contend that “shall not be infringed” is exactly what the Founders meant.
      The right for me to protect my family, my home, my land was established in the creation order when God made man the head of his household. If a government says I no longer can use my tools to defend my earthly dominion, then I must resist.

    • @GrantAHolcomb
      @GrantAHolcomb 2 года назад +2

      @Kenny Bugh Correct! I’m glad Rittenhouse was acquitted, as well. And yes, I do agree that self defense was upheld.
      However, many existing gun laws are restrictive. In fact, the very existence of any kind of gun law runs contrary to “shall not be infringed.” For example, in my state of Florida we’re not permitted to run binary triggers. Post-1986 Fully automatic weapons are still outlawed, nationally. Suppressors are regulated by the ATF. If you have an AR pistol with a barrel shorter that 16 inches you have to run a brace, rather than a stock otherwise you have to get a tax stamp with the ATF.
      All of these examples are restrictive and unconstitutional. Repeal all of them and abolish the ATF.

    • @GrantAHolcomb
      @GrantAHolcomb 2 года назад +2

      @Kenny Bugh Once again, my conviction is that “shall not be infringed” means any gun law is unconstitutional.

    • @GrantAHolcomb
      @GrantAHolcomb 2 года назад +1

      @Kenny Bugh I understand that. However, just because courts have backed a full-auto ban does not equate to it being a just law. Judges and justices are fallible with a proclivity to sin.
      The responsibility falls on godly citizens to ensure the laws of a nation, and most importantly, God’s law is joyously obeyed.

    Fascinating discussion. I do think that we all need to tie things a bit more to our Scripture moorings. Thanks for the book references. Hope you expand on this topic. I agree with an earlier comment as it seems an important lesson for us in our increasingly postmodern society. I do think looking at the mesh of faiths and cultures we are faced with on a daily basis and one of the reasonable objections which surfaced by a brother calling for a biblical foundation for our resistance were warranted. Israel in our LORD Jesus's day was under Roman law and oppression and yet He did say not only to carry their military's bag one mile, which was by law, but to carry it further, another mile or so. Wasn't that the Spirit of winning over one's enemies? Yes we have rights, but even our LORD laid aside His rights, to become a servant. I'm not saying that we submit to laws which come against His divine laws and commandments, e.g., Do not shed innocent blood--(abortion, etc)., And I also believe that there are Biblical non negotiables that we should never surrender as our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, we should not be subjects of human experimentation (Nuremberg Code). That should be resisted to death. Polycarp would not submit to the governing authorities who demanded that he deny Christ, but instead choose to die as a martyr. Everyday, we refuse the increasing unlawful bondage of government even in the smallest ways, refusing mask and experimental untested gene therapy we remain salt that seasons and preserves this encroaching corruption of our person and family and society and at least today a battle is won. (We live in California and in a City 98% vaxxed) We don't flee the frontlines of this battle, but choose to fight on the frontlines of this culture war even though at this time it appears unwise and unfruitful, except the light be removed, or the salt becomes useless the darkness has no retardent. Thank God for Dr. MacArthur's stand even though he was accused for supposedly breaching Romans 13. As the old saint John Owen proscribed, "Keep thy station, perform thy duty, comply not with the children of backsliding, if they return, embrace them freely, if not do thy duty constantly." My challenge with the church today is that it has succumbed and yoked itself to the government through Senator LBJ's bill which crept in and put the Church legally under the government's control in 1954. If you are yoked to the government then you must subject yourself to its laws, because of your legal agreement. It seems to be an example of modern Erastian heresy. From my experience as one until several years ago was yoked to that system, that I was partially blinded and dancing on the edge of church and state. One can not serve two masters right? You are either in or out. Not out of the world lest we could not reach those who are lost. We are also no doubt still affected by the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny. When another wrote that we are no longer affected by Rome, I must differ. Any Protestants or Evangelicals on the US Supreme Court? Not a one. We are indeed a pilgrim church traveling through an unstable world. One which we can affect it seems only a little at times. We serve a greater kingdom transcending time and space. I do believe much of the blindness of the church has been brought on by our own compromise. The enemy it so happens to be--us. How to live at peace with ourselves and family and neighbors and speak the truth in love seems to be the biggest battle we have at present. One thing the pandemic has taught well is we as humans are subject to the fear of man, which is a snare. We still have not grasped the fear of God which is truly the beginning of wisdom.

      Romans 13 spends more words describing the role of civil government and what it has to do to be an obedient servant of God, than it does talking about our obedience to it. The modern hermeneutic does not reflect the historical one from the time of the Protestant reformation.
      Hebrews 13:17 commands you to be obedient to your pastors and elders. Taken in isolation of the rest of the Bible, you might misconstrue this to mean absolute obedience, but in light of the whole bible, you would know they are exceeding their authority. If they are doing evil, most would justifiably defy them.

    But in many regards we are enduring less than what Roman Christians were enduring, yet Paul still wrote Romans 13 while Nero was ruling. So I believe the burden of evidence is on the person proving that revolution is not only permissible, but good. Romans13:2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. We would have to prove that the American Revolution does not count as resisting authorities. I know what the doctrine of lesser magistrates is, but it really seems as though it is a finicky evidence. I am interested in reading more on the subject, and glad he gave book suggestions. By the way, I must make this clear; I love the United States of America. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else apart from God calling me away. I love the freedom that it provides, but I still hold God's word higher than man's love of political freedom.

    I picked up "Justifying Revolution" based off of Doug's recommendation a couple months ago. Great read. It's worth the price tag for all the research that went into it. The #1 point that stood out to me in the book was England's intention of usurping the colonies churches by placing bishops over the churches which in effect would have given England authority not only over the churches but the court systems as well. The colonies would have lost all authority over their churches and would have been subject to England's strong arming without any representation in higher clerical authorities. This was a tipping point not only in increased preaching against England's tyranny but also the colonies move toward independence.

    Romans 13 says otherwise.
    1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
    2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
    3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
    4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
    5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
    6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
    7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
    keep in mind Paul wrote this while he was in prison waiting to be executed by the power that was over him and he wrote this to the Roman church instructing them how to behave. the Christians were being fed to lions as entertainment, crucified, among other things as well. if you honestly think the founders had it worse then the early church under Rome you are gravely mistaken and it makes them seem petty and selfish in comparison
