It is nice to see that we are not alone when having problems with kits and things going wrong. Too often you end up thinking it is my fault, I have done something wrong when the instructions aren't that clear or there is a mistake. Though a straightforward build there were still plenty of things I learnt from it. Thank you.
Don't change your presentation style, perfect as is! Nice to see someone have issues as well during the build. BTW Micro Set first than Micro Sol to get the decals to draw down tightly.
Really glad you done this I've got the same kit. I'll be doing 19 sqd and Douglas Bader's plane. Just building up my confidence on other Eduard Spitfires first. Thanks for all the advice much appreciated 👍
After a 50 year lay off I'm trying to find my feet again. Having just got this Spit I have to say your two videos are outstanding, very easy to follow and great advise. I must have watched 20+ before I saw yours!
Very nice build and really enjoy following your builds. Hope Eduard take note that there latest decals have become not very popular and resort back to the old type of decals. Great work and happy modelling.
Thanks for your video; very informative as I have been working on the XT W version of the Mk1a. Being my first Eduard kit ever, I was amazed by the level of details and moreover, how well even the smallest parts fitted together. Decals went on with me without any problems nor removal of coating: 5 layers of micro sol and set did the job.
Oh boy... I was crawling under my armchair watching you pull the clear film off those decals... 😭. By the way... I'm an Aussie and you say decal just right! 😎👍
A french guy found, by chance, how to manage this decal's extra film. Once the decal is well set and after a full day, simply apply a masking tape in a corner and the film comes almost alone ! I tried this and it works like a charm.
RAF roundels are so easy to paint - you should do it next time. You paint them before you paint main color and mask them off. Works flawlessly everytime
thanks for this heads up. I got the kit and I haven't built it yet, but this video has shown the difficulties of the decals. Which is a shame as there is one scheme that I really want to do. I might have to consider painting them on with an airbrush. Or get aftermarket ones.
Hi, thank you for a very nice video. If I can be picky :) I believe these strips on the fuel tanks are not armor plating, quite the opposite. They are the structural straps that hold the tank onto the fuselage structure (that tank held almost 500lbs of gas!). On the subsequent versions of the Spitfire one does not see these strips since the later tanks did have armor plating, making the structural strips invisible. Now I am sure some real experts would perhaps disagree? Haha. Happy model building and thanks again for the video.
I got a different brand of white tack, what a disaster! Far too sticky, I struggled to get it off. Gotta go on the hunt for the UHU you are using I guess!
A nice kit indeed it seems (with a few Eduard later MK Spits under the belt I feel I know what I can expect) Suffers from some quirky Eduard ' why make it clever and easy if we can make it difficult' engineering in the familiar areas. I didn't mind the Weekend Edition decals either, worked great on every Eduard kit I've built sofar. Not to mention the Cartograph decals that were included from time to time. I most certainly will look for after market in the decal department after hearing about these new style decals.
A bit late to the game with my comment, but use decal adhesive with these new Eduard transfer decals and once set (24hr) use white spirits to remove the transfer film.
I wonder if one of those stronger decal setting solutions would help? I'll probably get a masking set for all the big markings I suppose. One thing to note, I believe the front leading edge panel rivets on all Spits were actually puttied on the real aircraft, so rivets would be virtually invisible.. no need for the re-riveting with Rosie. I could be wrong about that but I've read it in a few places. Thanks for the video Jason, lovely job, blazing a trail!
Thanks Matt! Yes I wondered about the rivets on the leading edge, heard that too. I did apply Solvaset but they just seemed to sit there, I definitely need to have another go at them to see how they work. Thanks for the continued support 👍
@@ChampionScaleModelling UMP do a strong and extra strong setting solution for decals. I wonder if that would help the buggers melt in even more? www.umpretail.com/collections/decal-setting-solutions I've already stashed my kit (I've promised myself not to start any more until I've finished the 9 (yes 9) I already have on the go!)..... but I wonder if there are any spare or unused decals on the sheet to test with?
All Spitfire model manufacturers put panel lines and rivets on the wing leading edge. However it was puttied and painted smooth with primer. There's a period video on repairing the paintwork somewhere on the net where it's shown. I'll see if I can find it, and I'll put a link if I do.
@@mattperson7293 Hi Matt, here's the link on painting Spitfires. The part about the leading edge of the wings starts at 18:34 or 03:20 of the video time. I think the version in the video is a MK II, but the streamlining of the wings started with the prototype. I like your videos, which are informative and get to the point quickly. I'm a fairly new modeler, so I'm not looking forward to the decals at all. I've also seen other videos where they're proving to be problematical. I may even buy some aftermarket replacements. www.awm.gov.au/collection/F02334/
I have the kit. I just looked at the decals. They appear to be dated 7-7-20. The strange thing is that the "19" decal is actually yellow in my kit. Good video!
Excellent and concise explanation of your build. I’ve yet to try using pastel pigments myself, how do you protect or ‘fix’ them afterwards from being touched / handled ?
Lovely job Jason, I'm tossing up whether to get this or the Tamiya kit, both have Stanford-Tuck's FZ-L decals. I do feel a leaning towards the Eduard though the problems you had with the decals might put me off....... By the way I was born in Kent and I've always pronounced decals the way you do, the other way I think of as American English.
Champion Scale Modelling I agree, I’m regretting buying the Eduard now (typical spur of the moment impulse buy) and I have picked up the latest Tamiya which is well supported with Camo and insignia replacement masks if you want to avoid Tamiya thick decals
These new decals sound like they are causing problems, and they won’t solve silvering so it’s difficult to see what their benefit is🤔 Great 2nd part of the build, I’m curious to start on mine so I can make my mind up . I have recently been painting my own insignia on an early Tamiya Spitfire and have ordered a Topnotch insignia mask set to use so I can hopefully dodge the Eduard decals on at least the main insignia. Great build by the way 👍🏻
Most enjoyable video series. One question regarding masking the camo. I invariably get a raised edge and often have to lightly sand it back to stop the line showing through the decals. Am I too heavy handed with the airbrush?
Nice vid - great finish, despite the few problems there. However, those decals seem to absolutely blow. How much does this kit retail for? If it's a reasonable price, then I might be inclined to replace them with something else. Anyway, great vid thanks for sharing.
Lol “Deakel, or as some people prefer DeeKal, but I’m from Somerset so it’s Deakel”. It’s funny how our language evolved into almost different languages in the different regions it’s spoken. Had we not been so connected in modern times as we are Im sure English would be completely different.
Poor decal performance should never force one into a corner, but perhaps the lifting of decal colors could be incorporated into the overall weathering scheme. Also, I use Walther's decal setting solution, which in my experience, is the most aggressive and nearly turns decals into liquid. If not used with extreme care, it can completely ruin a decal. While I've not used this type of decal, I'd bet that the Walther's could have settled those Eduard decals as desired. Anyway, very nice build in spite of the difficulties.
You are one of those who got me back into modeling and it is not appropriate for me giving you "tips" but putting decals on any other surface than high gloss coat is asking for trouble. Also noticed how your decal solution did not want to stay there.
Glad to have helped you find the hobby! Your tips are very appropriate, regarding the gloss coat etc, the point of the video was to ‘test’ these decals under the same conditions I’d approach any other. The reason they lifted is because they didn’t adhere, which is the same issue that creates silvering so for these decals you may very well be right that the answer lies with a very high gloss coat, more practice is needed with these! Thanks for the advice 👍
Those new decals are a travesty... If I ever get this will get AM decals or attempt Cricut masks... but sheesh that decal peeling would have me throw this against a wall!
you only used Micro Set? (blue bottle) why not Micro sol?? (the one with the red bottle) ... micro set ist useless... Micro sol will „melt“ the decal and give it that painted on look...
Outstanding. It’s nice to see somebody giving a matter of fact blow by blow of both the good and the bad and not giving any of these guys a pass.

I have the double Spitfire set called The Few, am going to build one as the plane of Douglas Bader and the other of Sailor Malan 😁😁
Lovely build, Jason. Thanks for the heads-up on the decals.
An excellent second part, I was surprised by the fit and decal issues. Great end result a lovely neat early Spitfire. Well done.
The decals process is ridiculously a set back. Other than that looks like a great kit. Great job with it. 👌
Glad to hear that you also mask up the wrong patch for spraying, I thought it was just me that did that :)

Another Aussie agrees with Champ's decal pronunciation.
Those decals remind of the old school thick ones from like frog and matchbox kits
Beautifull model..Congratulations..!..a lot of great work..!
Thanks for the heads up on those decals, I'm doing the Mk.1a at the moment and it looks like after market here I come
I miss when Eduard used to use cartograph
Great video, and interesting info about this new kit. Like the info about the quote NEW decals. Look like a lot of extra work and then repair.
Great build video! Thanks. Don't apologise for pronouncing decal correctly or change how you say it. :-)

Yes they are !

I dont understand, the decals in the this kit have a peel off carrier film like dry transfer decals? If do thats very unusual. Excellent build though.

Does this Eduard kit have alignment pins? Or is it “align-in -the-blind-at-your-own -risk” type of Eduard kit?
